State of origin is an NRL yearly match where a NSW and QLD team verse eachother. It is a 3 game series, and the teams are made of, or meant to be made of, players that originate from the respective state. But some players were born in and played their first games of NRL in the state which they are pitted up against. Greg Inglis is an example of this. Born in NSW, his first junior team was in NSW yet he plays for QLD.

OKAY I'm from America, and I've enjoyed many hours watching "Today Show Funny Bits" (I find Nine Network's Today to be much funnier than our Today Show). In that time I have come to adore Karl and his co-anchors. I don't fully understand what Karl's problem is. Is he not proud of being from NSW? Does he just like the winning teams? Is he distant from Pete and didn't appreciate the tweet? I don't understand what is happening. Lol.

Australians are known to be proud of their state. Especially around the time of 'State of Origin' (A competition between the states of NSW and Queensland in NRL) and Karl Stefanovic has always been a very proud Queenslander. Since State of Origin represents the place in which the NRL players played their junior years of Rugby League, they decided to break Karl by revealing that he originated from New South Wales and NOT Queensland. I'm from NSW and I'd react the same way as him. Must be an Australian thing.

I see none of these other pinheads except the Captain have answered you properly. It was staged to demonstrate the passions and difficulty that arises when the best football players are made to play for the opposing state, even if they had only left as kids after starting their junior football there. All understand this going in, though. Normally good natured. The 3-game series is called 'State of Origin', which is why Lisa kept repeating it. Yes, We call it State of Origin and it is a football series between Queensland and New South Wales, both states in Australia. Typically you support the state in which you were born or first played football in (hence State of Origin) however some people support the state they currently live in or spent the most time in.

To cut a long story short, in Australia they have intense sporting rivalry between two states: Queensland and New South Wales, because of State of Origin rugby league (3-match series mid year). Both states are very passionate about where they come from and where they're state loyalties lie. I think this segment on the Today Show was just staged.
