Karl Bartos: Without A Trace Of Emotion -- The Film (official)
Музыка
Hamburg, St. Pauli, Reeperbahn one of these nights in late summer...
Along with the first neon lights and impressions of the city we're about to hear an enchanting melody, reminiscent of a German Volkslied. Somehow the melody seems to encapsulate time by bringing back memories and evoking expectations at once. Why is that so?
Cut. We see Karl Bartos walking down the Große Freiheit, a busy side street off the Reeperbahn. Coming from Indra, passing by Kaiserkeller and Star-Club. Those were the venues where it all began, where all the famous bands and artists from the early 60s had played, including the Beatles.
The melody fades away and Karl sings the first verse: "I'm on my way - got the world at my feet / But I wish I could remix my life to another beat"
Approaching the Reeperbahn Karl makes a left, heading past the Davidwache police station and further down the road to the Panopticum. Bang! Without warning he finds himself in front of a huge billboard on the wall with a well-known face looking back at him: Herr Karl, his legendary showroom dummy doppelgänger from his former life. And in a flashback he visualizes his countless roles and transformations:
- as a photographer, probably right from a shooting with a model; THE model
- the robot appears in a spin
- here's a scene from the TEE film; see the trenchcoat?
- next is the Tour de France outfit; for safety reasons he's wearing a bicycle helmet, of course
Cut. In a rush Karl writes down the arpeggio melody and before too long the doppelgänger is raising his voice: "Every single day I am here to let you know / Whatever happens to you I won't let go, I won't let go"
Cut. Press conference. All cameras capture Herr Karl, his alter ego. The tension is rising and we see the flashlights reflecting in the golden records on the wall, just like crossfire. Standing at the microphones he has nothing to say, not a single word. But throughout the scene he acts without a trace of emotion and looks incredibly cool.
As the music evolves Karl replies to the doppelgänger: "I'm so glad to know that you care about your family / Don't you call me eccentric but you kill me, you kill me"
Suddenly he turns around and walks to the wings. During his walk off - coming from nowhere - someone counts down 4 - 3 - 2 - 1 and here's another flashback sequence of the famous showroom dummy:
- a vocal session
- his Tour de France outfit still looks great
- "You're so close but far away" - The Telephone Call comes to mind
- reading "Melody Maker"
- a vinyl record recalls some wicked electro sounds
- he discovers himself in the looking glass
- dress code: red shirt, black tie
- enjoying an abstract film by Oskar Fischinger
- the super 8-camera is gonna be his best friend
- finally, with a glass of champagne, you can almost hear him say: "Get on with your life"
Cut. Back on the Reeperbahn Karl gets on the bus, in the distance we see the big wheel of the fairground, shining so bright. And on his way home, he thinks to himself: I knew it all along, the perception of music always includes the past, the present and the future.
THE END

Karls solo work is weirdly fascinating to me. When the boys release material on their own you can tell what part they represented in Kraftwerk. Karl was the melody maker and pop structurist, Ralf was behind the forward thinking themes, lyrics and image, Florian made the weird signature sounds and engineered the hell out of their records, and Wolfgang brought the funk and the very minimal yet noticeable human element with his percussion work (admittedly, Karl had a lot to do with this as well). They made some incredible magic together. Too bad Ralfs perfectionism and work ethic drove all the members away but alas, nobody makes an incredible impact on the world and it's course of history by being nice.
"Every single day I am here to let you know I won't let go". This is Ralf's voice in Karl's mind.

Is so sad they messed up and there's no kraftwerk anymore They should call it nowdays samplewerk
Karl Bartos made music like this when the guys from Daft Punk had not yet learned to tie his shoes. All modern electronica owes its existence to Kraftwerk.
It's funny when you break the Kraftwerk members apart just how much Bartos encapsulates the Kraftwerk sound on his own.

My thoughts exactly. As I said to someone recently, in a lot of ways, he WAS kraftwerk.

Personally I think this sounds like a bad cover version of something they would've done in the late 70s. Both sonically and in his personal life he seems to be stuck in a perpetual 1978.

The most "gently" and commercial rythmic I think.

His best song. Black tie, red shirt, you're history....
Ironically a very emotional masterpiece...
Happy birthday Karl.! No track was more honest like this one.!
The problem with this song is that... it's too short!

I love that the old man machine Karl doll is here
Makes it pretty clear (to me), who wrote all the memorable melodies, like Computer Love and The Model...
KB HERE...KB YOUR GREAT.

KAROL BARTOS ! KOCHANY MÓJ ! 🇵🇱🇵🇱👍👍🇵🇱🇵🇱
A man ahead of his time.
The very best of Karl Bartos to date.
had I been born in Europe I would have been broke chasing so many great musicians around from concert to concert.
I really believe that Karl and Wolfgang are the former members with the most amount of resentment of their time with Ralph and Florian, though they all worked together well, to make great music.
Great Muzik, from the Master Composer "Karl Bartos"...... Melodies of this is like no other.........You did it again my friend, Thank You!!!
Respect music!🎙🎼🖤🇩🇪🇩🇪
Wonderful is my trace of emotion about this song and video. Awesome.

This is Karls best song to date!
One of the best songs of the decade.
there is something I love about him, his music xxx
Beautiful
I totally love this song and had it as an 'earworm' on my driving test and passed!!!
The song that sold "Off the Record" to me back then. Wonderful Album with so many nostalgic moments to love. Danke, Karl!

This is incredible. The music is the contrary of the title, it has SO much feeling! And the story behind it is so deep. The video looks amazing, too.
Brilliiant! Wunderbar!
Karl, the true Melody Maker, love you friend. Freindchip.
The bassline sounds allmost as Autobahn. Übercool. Awsome song. Love it
the best work of Karl, keep it up like these Karl, Incredible song, Great Record!
nice!back to 1970s...forever
This is awsome ....
This song gives me so many traces of emotion !
@Ulf Orjan Engstrom True. Infact, many tracks contain elements of past Kraftwerk albums. Most notably the last track, Hausemuzik is unquestionably a mirror image of Kraftwerk's Tanzmuzik from the 1973 Ralf und Florian album. It is quite clear that the influence cannot be escaped even by past members. Excellent album :-)
Sounds very much like "show business" from "Elektric Music" (another Bartos project).....Nice !!!
Beautiful music
Der letzte kreative Kraftwerker, schöner Song!

To sum up Kraftwerk's essence of composition in two words: Karl Bartos.

I don't know if it was intended but the melody at 1:23 is the spitting image of the extended version of "TV" by Elektric Music.
fantastic
Klasse und Qualitaet A1.
Great Carlos!
I like!...
Superbe ! Great job Herr Karl :)
Nice one Bartos.
100% on point!
got the plan of go there and visit that place, now, considering the circumstances, impossible, maybe it's the end of the world as we know it. They got us confined and fearful
Wonder how.Kraftwerk would be today if he had not left.
I finally got my copy of the album yesterday. Juuuust *beautiful*! And bloody hellfire - I'm in the booklet! :D
It’s a great song and album but he just can’t escape that Kraftwerk sound.
He was a robot.
To tell the truth, I grew up with those robots!
Dress code red shirt black tie.
Karl Bartos is not a terrestrial, he comes from Vulcan!
neon lights v2.0 :]
Surely we didn't saw the same video.
Hard to see the point of comparing. It's like when you have to children and somebody compares them...
The hook sounds like he recycled it from the song "How Long" that he co wrote on the 1996 album "Raise the Pressure" by Electronic
@morningcoffeecat2271

Karl had the melody before working on Raise The Pressure. So this song is like his version
It's always subjective taste of course, but you fail to see the art of it.
Karl > Ralf
The original version co-wrote with Electronic (Bernard Sumner from New Order and Johnny Marr from The Smiths) andkzread.info/dash/bejne/mnWXrKiLd7W1g7g.html
KRAFTWERK is not dead.
diss track
Only good song on the album?
L S D
The idea is good, (altough it's almost nothing but a recreation of Kraftwerk's - Neonlights videoclip from 1978) but the physical result is amatheur. It could have been made much better. Mr.Bartos, please write me next time before you do anything!
Daft Punk who?
I agree with Funkystuffify. Karl´s new songs sound very amateurish. I´m also tired of his crying. If Ralf and Florian treated him that bad why has he stayed with Kraftwerk for so long. He seems to like being the victim
Very amatheurish like most of Karl Bartos works from the last periods. There were better times at the age of Esperanto. VERY amatheur, tasteless jobs. Very good songwriter though.
мне не нрав.
