Kargah Buddha Gilgit Pakistan | The Man -Eating Ogress | Bhuddist Remains in Pakistan
About 9 km from the main city of Gilgit lies the carving of the Kargah Buddha.
When we started to move towards the attraction, we didn’t think much of it, for us it was just a tick on our checklist as we had missed it the last time we had visited Gilgit.
But when we actually got there the place was way beyond our expectations we ended up spending more time there than we had initially planned to.
The route from Gilgit through the villages and towns to the location itself was beautiful, Kargah Nala was an additional surprise.
As we parked our car, we noticed young children beat the heat in the crystal clear waters, swimming and performing various acts in front of us.
It was a moment of unexplainable joy. Just sitting there and watching them.
Every year thousands of Buddhists from all over the world predominantly China, Japan and Korea come to Pakistan to see the Statue of Kargha Buddha.
According to Tourism Department of Gilgit Baltistan in the year of 2018-19 more than half million tourists visited Gilgit to see the Buddha only.
It was discovered somewhere between 1938-1939 along with some other Buddhist remains in the region.
It is at a height of 50 ft overlooking the beautiful towns of Barmas ,Khur, Napura and Baseen.
Some archaeologists believe it was completed in the 7th century.
At that time Gilgit was under the rule of China. From the 3rd to the 11th century Buddhism was the main religion here.
The Kargah Buddha is locally known as Yashani, it is a carving of the Buddha with his right hand raised upwards this indicates the the posture of Abhaya.
Legend speaks that the carved figure is actually of a man-eating Ogress who terrorised and harmed the residents of the area. She was later pinned into the mountain by the local priest to protect the community from her evil deeds.
It is also believed that the series of holes around the carving making its boundary are actually placed there to hold the ogress tight in place.
We spent a delightful morning unraveling the mystic myths and feeling the raw freshness of the clean and pure atmosphere surrounding this historic marvel.
