For me this stirs up memories of first hearing Johnny Cash cover NIN's "Hurt". This cover arrives at a time when it is so needed and IMO greatly honors both original artists.

Exactly. Hearing Johnny Cash first sing "Hurt" 15 years ago (knowing his life) was a revelation ( as was his singing on "In My Life"). This is a similar time/space/experience bender. I'm 65 and so glad I'm still expanding my horizons a bit - I posted this on Facebook and my 34-year old daughter immediately posted "I came for the Karen O, I know you came for the Willie Nelson."

Sunny, I was partying so hard in Los Angeles when this song came out in 1981/'82; I never heard nor cared about the lyrics in this. But now, at 67, I'm done dancing at a shallow party! This is 2020. And these lyrics screams it! What a miserable year! But I sure learned the lyrics!! Yep!

A lot of the songs he covers are the last songs you think he would cover. :) He's always had a penchant for covering great songs regardless of genre. For someone who is such a great songwriter himself, it's interesting that he also does a lot of covers.

Nelson is a legend who can really add his own distinctive flavor to any song, no matter whose it was originally. Johnny Cash was the same way... legends all around. /no disrespect to Karen O, an excellent musician and artist in her own right

Ohhhhhhhh now I get why this is such a popular song. It literally changes everything for me. Gorgeous.

Sometimes going down that rabbit hole late at night is a good thing. I saw on Karen O’s web page that her cover with Willie Nelson of David Bowie’s collaboration with Queen’s “Under Pressure” was out. What an odd collaboration was my first thought; I could hardly imagine these two artists crossing paths let alone working together. They are completely different genres and generations. This is a truly haunting rendition of a song that I thought was perfect when the original artists released it. But Karen O and Willie Nelson raise the song to new levels here. The vocals shine through in ways that I’m sure have David Bowie and Freddie Mercury standing in awe with tears in their eyes. Karen O states on her web page about her choice of this song, “-I’ve heard this song countless times without processing the gravity of what Bowie and Freddie were singing about, maybe because their performances are so exhilarating you get swept away in the high of that duet.” and I couldn’t agree more. The musicianship in this version is still outstanding and a perfect accompaniment to these voices, but it is the expression of the lyrics that elevates this to the heavens.

I thought I was the only one crying until I read the other comments. This was so needed in these crazy times. I love you both!

Music is art and this was a beautiful rendition of the song, in their natural voices… not a copycat version. In any case, it looks like you loved the original so you must be a wonderful person.

This is a glorious, poignant reimagining of this iconic song. I keep repeating it.

Why?!? Because they made this song theirs? I grew up listening to Queen & Bowie, both are classics, but Willie & Karen gave this awesome song new life with their unique take on it. It's good to have an open mind.

This is sublime. From Trigger’s bassline to the clear, delicate delivery of Karen and Willie’s vocals, which blend so perfectly in spite of they’re lack of apparent similarity. And Willie singing about getting “higher, higher,” is just icing on the cake. This is the right way to cover a song. Stay true to the original, while discovering a whole new point of view and spirit within it.
