Quando Ike foi para o General Staff College em Leavenworth, ele usou as anotações de Patton, já que Patton o havia frequentado antes. Até 1942, Patton tinha uma classificação superior a Ike, sendo superado por ele no decurso da guerra. Patton era difícil devido à sua propensão a dizer e fazer coisas erradas, e Ike referiu-se a ele como uma “criança problemática”, mas que era indispensável em batalha.
