This is without a doubt one of the best karate\ martial arts videos. You guys do a good job showing people how movements from the traditional arts can be used outside the dojo in everyday real life scenarios.

I love the aspect of panic shown in most of the demonstrations on the "street." The form is clearly in a "whatever works" mindset, rather than focusing on form. The clip at 1:13 demonstrates this the best. A fight should always be expected, but it will always be shocking. You can't have perfect form when shocked, but you can still have form.

You guys have really found the truth of your karate. . I teach a self protection system both defensive and offensive. . My back ground is 20 yrs+ aikido and jujitsu. . With 10 yrs working as a prison officer ..we are reality based .with situational awareness and environmental awareness being key ... all that is the way we practice .. what we practice is jujitsu /aikido with around 95% of it striking. . Yet your street application from a karate background is hardly different from ours from a different background. . We are all limited by being only able to move as humans move .. the truth in your karate same as the truth in our aikido is that there is only so many ways you can punch, kick,or throw someone. . One of my instructors once told me good fighting arts are like the spokes of a wheel .. the better you get the further towards the middle you get .no matter what system if it is effective you move closer to the others with progress. Until you meet at the hub of the wheel .. experts /masters . If what they have been taught no matter what style it is if it's effective. You all end up at the hub.. karate guys throwing like jujitsu guys aikido guys striking as fluidly as boxers. . We all become one with our skills .while still keeping our differences. . You guys always show that with your videos .. well done.

For it to work you have to change your way of thinking. Be the attacker . Not the pray. In an instant. That's why i hate the word defence. That mentality makes you the hunted . Not the killer. I did karate (in the UK) for a couple of years, and frankly it was a waste of time. As soon as I checked out ju-jitsu (traditional Japanese, pre-BJJ days) I never once went back to karate. I felt ju-jitsu answered the questions that karate did not even begin to ask. The reason for that was I spent a lot of time uselessly marching up and down dojos punching empty air. When I was taught kata I was taught next to no bunkai so I was effectively just pointlessly waving my arms and legs about. Looking back, most of the time I had no real idea of what I was doing except 'I was learning karate'. I once asked my instructor about the 12 throws of wado-ryu and he tried bullshitting me, but I could tell he had no idea. It was bad and ineffective teaching. Had I been taught karate such as demonstrated here, something with point and purpose, I believe I would probably still be training in it to this day.

  • @MrMattias87

I got a similar story to that. i joined a shotokan club down the road from where i live and it advertised that they teach practical self defense. The instructor was clueless about bunkai or even ju kumite as he was too afraid that we will get or get in trouble by the law if we used our karate. So I switch shotokan clubs/organisation to where I did find practical self defense and bunkai. Never looked back.

This reminds me so much of the Isshinryu karate i studied in Parkers Chapel AR with this aging, real "old school" teacher who had been there in the 60s training with some of the guys who had been to okinawa in the war. We sparred every day, he encouraged punching in the face, and "going hard".. he believed that a person who had never been hit wouldn't survive a street fight. We talked often about the possible meanings and applications of the movements of the kata. Included grappling and gound fighting. It was about being tough, ready, and finding efficient and quick ways to end a fight... not so much about perfect form (although that did come into play with tournaments) Tournaments were open to all styles. I remember we had tae kwon do schools, kung fu, and other karate styles that would attend our tournaments because we wanted to be tested. What you're doing here.. feels like the way karate was meant to be studied. It should be practical. The students should understand the actual meaning and uses of the movements, and then it should be practiced in "real" sparring/fighting situations. or else how could you really be prepared for the unpredictability of a real life fight? have either of you considered trying your techniques in and MMA setting?

wow, great bunkai! that's what's missing from so many dojos out there today- we learn all these different moves weather it's from kata, or kihon ippon kumite, but then when it comes down to actual kumite, assuming it's not point or light/no contact sparring, everybody just kickboxes and all the the fundamentals go out the window. The popular consensus is that karate is all out-fighting, but this goes to show that in-fighting and grappling is all there- it just needs to be taught, tested, and applied as you've shown here. Cheers, and have my subscribe! I hope more dojos start to follow your example and move away from the "sport" aspect and back to the real roots of karate! Osu!

I have to admit there were times where it looked like it was executed in a goofy fashion as if an enemy would fall over the softest blow but for a traditional art i saw so much combat effectiveness that the MMA community couldnt disagree with and i love the form i think its definitely a great and amazing. People think boxing and kickboxing is so great in the streets because of how well it works in combat sports but you can easily break your hands where as your forearms are solid bones and with enough conditioning can be just as deadly as a thai fighters shin (a lil exaggerated lol)

Nico Brocco They've made a some already, look up "Joint Manipulation" under their channel. As far as seeing everything they know, well...the smart warrior never shows you EVERYTHING, at least not all at once. But they have a bunch of videos covering many different aspects of karate and fighting principles.

May I ask if you also do full contact training or at least hard contact? Reason I ask is that your videos look great but they should also address the very real issue of IMPACT on the attacker and how it effects him and YOU. I only bring it up because your videos don't show that level of contact.

Karate needs to be combined with Judo. The thing about Karate styles is that they require space to use effectively. Most real fights will be in close range. So those Karate kicks can get jammed up in many real fights. When sparring in dojos everybody naturally maintains space. That won't be the case in a real fight. This is why I'd recommend Karate people learn some Judo throws when fights go into close range.

@@edgar22452 I've seen people get their kicks caught in fights. So kicking can be an issue in real fights. Karate people need to realize this. In dojos an tournaments catching kicks isn't allowed. But it happens in real fights. It's best to keep kicks below the waist I've learned. That's why leg kicks are popular in MMA.
