Karate Concept: Disengage Low then High

This 5th video in our Karate Concepts series looks at a well-known idea but puts it in a different perspective. The idea of disengaging the thought process can be used with any technique, in this video we show it being used with strikes aimed at the lower part of the opponent's body to set up attacks to the upper part.
0:46 Examples from Kata
1:29 Sparring Drills against the wall
2:34 Light sparring to practice disengaging low then high.
We are a group on a mission to return Karate to its roots through the use of Kata as self-defense.

Reminds me of something I once heard from a Krav Maga instructor; he said always initiate a preemptive first strike with dialogue, so for example if you are getting mugged tell your attacker you don't have any cash on hand but you can write them a check. This gets them thinking (about something other than attacking or defending against you), and when you can tell there mind is elsewhere, or when the begin to respond, you throw everything at them you have, kitchen sink included.

+IndigoXYZ18 that's a great example, and we definitely agree and practice that same idea at our dojo. Being able to disengage, verbally or physically, is vital to making any technique successful. thanks!

+Dave Edmondson Thanks! Glad you were able to follow them, some people were suggesting we take that out since it's hard to focus on two images at once. Hopefully we can find a medium that caters to both suggestions, thanks for the encouragement!

hey karate culture! I really like your videos on kata example that could be used in a fight. Now my original idea was that before I used to do oyama karate (rooted from kyokushin karate and does a little weapon kata) but now I'm thinking why did I quit karate for? Looking back from those years when I first did a karate. I remember teaching everyone a kata kids to adults. But 5 years has passed and now I'm looking back at myself being really unshaped guy. But I had so many responsibility even though if I was a middle school student back then. I had to sacrifice karate and moved on my life with academic life style. But before I quit sensei was kind enough for me to say this "I know you were not passionate about being a martial artist, but as a goal of being a martial arts instructor I feel you and I been using karate as a real threat to everyone. You made that decision wisely but I'm glad that you have realized it now." And so without any words I bowed and said osu to everyone and left the dojo. 5-6 years has passed I has moved on my life shaping and making me a better person as if now. The words that I have told from sensei has never forgotten. But I don't like myself right now. I'm out of shape even if I was in the state of still being flexible enough physically. I have went to gym, I have went everywhere but everywhere I'd go I end up wasting my mom's bills not going to gym or classes. I really don't know how to overcome this depression that I'm going through in my life. As a person of what I am right now is being distracted and lazy. I wish to become a better person in shape right now. But I cannot make any of those changes in my life anymore. That's when I thought of coming to a goju ryu karate to train with everyone haply again and teach kata and kumite strategies. But then I told myself what if the instructor in that karate tells me the same thing after quiting the dojo? The deep thoughts are still going through my head trying and trying not to stop procrastinating myself. I wasn't quite sure if I'm ready or not to attend karate school again.

Hey buddy, thanks for the message! I think the first thing you need to do is force yourself to go for a run everyday. Even something like 5 mins for the first week, and then 10 minutes the next week. It'll help clear your head and also get you moving again. Everyone has demons they're struggling with but it's up to you to make the change. And I believe you'll be able to. Also, karate will always be there when you're ready to return to it. The hardest thing to do is walk through the door so maybe gradually take one step in front of the other. Perhaps go back to the dojo to sit and watch for a few classes, then after a while ask if you can join the beginner's class. Starting over is always a good thing. Think of this time in your life as a way to start fresh. You can do it!
