Kar - a Simple to make DIY cart Axle

The idea was to create an axle for my cart that could easily be assembled / disassembled without the use of a tool such as a wrench. Putting wheels and axle and the rest of my cart into my backpack.

    Actually tried this. I clean homes and have to Pressure wash around the home. Washers are not designed to wheel around well, more bring it to a place and park it but I needed to drag it around a yard full of mud and debris. I had some high wheels but the pin bolt axels gave too much play, wheels wobbled, basically dragging it because wheels wouldn't spin right. Had some conduit, maybe 1/2" since tires were 1/2 bearing. Took some sanding of the bolt to get them to slide in, had to jammer in to widen the conduit a tad but now the wheels don't bow inward and allowed wider spacers on the outside of frame so wider stance. Best thing is without the removable handle the washer frame is not stiff..This axel mod makes it stiff so I don't need that high handle which makes it easier to load

    Matthias - Nice idea. Take it one step further by using all thread instead of two bolts to improve the stability and the strength issues. Be sure to used two nuts locked together on each end so that the torque is just right, and nothing comes apart. The only disadvantage, you will need two wrenches. With some more engineering you can reduce it down to one wrench.

  • @MattCrom

    @MattCrom

    Thank you for the feedback. The all thread I could get here in stores is not hardened steel, thus it would bend. The bolts I use are hardened and can not be bend.

  • @ScorpionRegent

    @ScorpionRegent

    Жыл бұрын

    @@MattCrom Having the all thread tightened inside the conduit with nuts and washers gives the combined part a rigidity that is stronger than the sum of its components. This does not mean that it won't bend, it's just less likely to bend. I have used this technique to construct camera booms out of all thread and PVC pipe. It's a compromise technique that saves weight and money. If weight isn't as important you can sleeve the all thread in a snug bit of tubing and pack the rest of the dead air space in the conduit with sand which will make it substantially more rigid. I make no promises it will work, but just present it as a possible option. Just how heavy a load do you carry with your cart?

The only thing different I'm going to do, probably, is use a hollow piece of smaller diameter pipe to put inside the axle instead of bolts so that I don't have to drill through a hard, solid bolt. I am feeling the approach in this video might be too light, or not strong enough, to carry people. My need for the cart was that it could easily be disassembled without tools and that I could carry the parts. The use case for you seems different. A stronger and fixed axle would be most recommended

    Hello mate! I found a 36" piece of threaded 1/2 pipe at my local hardware store that I guess I could use as an axle itself? Could I just use that and adjust the tightness around the wheels with nuts and washers? Do you see any downsides to using a threaded pipe through the wheels?

  • @MattCrom

    @MattCrom

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey DaveB, I'm not sure what kind of steel this threaded pipe made out of. If it's hardened steel you be surely ok. But I think it might be softer steel, if so, it could bend. If your cart/contraption/load is really light than this still might be ok. Hope this helps..

    Pass a threaded rod through it ($8?) and torque it. Thought of a shim (thin washer) after you drill the hole - that would cut down the play. Should be able to use something though if you had the energy to find it, that would PULL the bolt into the rod - like a small "key" (a motor shaft key) - that would function like a wedge. You'd need something other than a round through hole. Have an idea here - drill the bolt hole a bit short of lining up perfectly, and drill a "chamfer" that will line up - then try driving a nail through it to pull the bolt tight. Just thinking. I'm avoiding work. But I also actually have this problem.

    I'm in theater production and we have a remarkably limited budget, so this was very helpful. Do you have an estimate on how much weight this type of axle can support? The wagon I'm looking at making will not move quickly, but it does need to carry two people. If this axle is not heavy-duty enough, is there a way you know of that can strengthen it?

  • @MattCrom

    @MattCrom

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi, I am sensing that carrying two people on a single axle, as shown in the video, is not going to work. If you have two axles, then just maybe it could work. if those persons do not jump around on the cart. You could maybe use bigger dimensions than the rods and steel pipe I have used. This cart was made to be simple, lightweight and repairable along the way without the need of tools such as wrenches or screwdrivers. Your situation and needs seem very different.
