To be fair, I could picture it for one reason. There are people who kept use cemeteries as an open space to launch fireworks, Which of course leads to liability issues, potential damages to memorials. trash being left around, and so forth. I grew up near a place that had a cemetery near the stadium used for the city’s 4th of July displays and we’d occasionally hear of people watching from the cemetery and launching their own fireworks there.

how do you "shut down" a cemetary exactly? Do you make the customers go home? Can we really not be free from taxes, even in death? If churches don't have to pay property tax why the hell does cemeteries have to pay. I really doubt they're making a whole bunch of profit and even if they do it's not the government's business. Cemeteries do not consume city services like residential and commercial do. The cops don't get called for shoplifting at cemeteries. Nobody in a cemetery is putting wear and tear on the sidewalks in the roads. Cemeteries should not be property taxed

Jews go to Jewish Funeral Homes, Italians go with Italian F.H, Mexicans stick with Spanish speaking F.H..... etc. I'm a white Funeral Director and have done tons of work for local Black Funeral Establishments. I was told that they would bring bodies to me as they didn't want to deal with the hassle of explaining to Black Families why a white guy was showing up at Grandmas house to take her away. It's Not Racist.... just how things are.

If a religious or non-profit manages the cemetery, it is exempt from any and all taxes - persona, property, county, and state, as defined under Missouri's Constitution, Article X, Section 6. This cemetery is not owned/managed by a religious or non-profit organization, but instead is owned by a private owner/entity, and is thus not covered under the provisions/protections of Article X, Section 6 of Missouri's Constitution.

Unless she coughs up about 67k, she won’t own twelve gates much longer ..

You all don’t know how to analyze information. The young lady said she used this cemetery for her brother because it’s black owned. People in this country make this type of decision all the time. That is how they always have been. Nothing "weird" here. Graveyards are almost entirely privately owned, except for the state ones where poor people are dumped without markers. Did you actually think people typically pay a government agency for their grave site? Have you had your IQ checked?

The Historic Elmwood Cemetery is Broke as well. Last I heard, they owe more than $80,000 in just lawn work alone. That was a couple of years ago....

This is WHY our family going back to 1940s our loved ones BURIED in a Public Cemetery . In our parents Home County, N.Mi..

Their bbb record shows 1 complaint in the past 12 months, over a headstone fully paid for not being placed at their relative's grave. That complaint was UNANSWERED by the business.. The 2 prior complaints are not accessible to see if it was the same or different problems or if they were resolved but the BBB rates them an F. Apparently the owner likes to make money but not spend any... My question is how many people are buried there each year? At 5k-25k per burial (average burial costs nationwide) how could she not come up with 67k in 4 years? Maybe if she fixed the brick and tile work on the entry gate and cut the grass a little more often it would attract more business? Sometimes you have to spend money to make money.

To bad that it might close. I heard that people were dying to get in there. I will show myself out.

It's so sad they had to build such a big fence around the property, you have to do something, people are dying to get in!

Most cemeteries don't, because they're non profits. There are for profit cemeteries however, such as this one, and they do pay tax. The idea of a for profit cemetery is very odd though.

that is messed up. I'm sick of property taxes. Ive seen a lot of private cemeteries just go abandoned. the owners die and the county just leaves them in distraught conditions. I think we need to get rid of property taxes. You have a lot of elderly people lose their homes because they can't afford to pay the taxes.

In fact there is a federal tax exemption for cemeteries. Otherwise folks laid to rest would eventually be disinterred because nobody is paying the ongoing fees for cemeteries that are full. Bad law passed by bad politicians.

Why are cemeteries taxed?

This kind of stuff is happening all over the country. These places including furneral homes. These places don't handle the money coming in properly and pretty soon building start falling apart, cemeteries fill up, but keep taking bodies. Garages and out buildings fill up with bodies, older graves get dug up and reused. Pretty soon the people running furneral homes and cemeteries just walk away taking a bunch of money with them. You read about this happening all the time. You see it on the tv news and see it here on KZread. These type of businesses need to be closer regulated with much stiffer penalties.

I could just imagine a company like, oh say, Black Rock wants to shut down every cemetery so they can build on it. Id imagine to theyd see cemeteries as perfectly good real estate property going to waste that could be turning a profit for them. I've always wondered why there's such a huge push to opt for cremation instead of traditional burial, I get it that that's a much less expensive option and many people who just can't afford a traditional burial for their loved ones don't have any other option. But I always suspected that there is something more behind that. every time I pass a grave yard Ive thought to myself I wonder how long it's going to be before they think they can get away with building on land that was once used as a cemetery. I really would not put it past them. What are these people supposed to do? Dig up their loved ones and rebury them somewhere else?

If monthly is it too low and the cemetary can't raise it? Some places cemeteries are highly regulated, you can't even flip a plot for more than 10% more than you paid for it. PS 30 years ago a neighbor suddenly passed, who conveniently owned a small cemetery, in ground plaques, no stones, easy to mow. It went for $20K. He made money because he had the physique and time to hand dig the graves himself.

The residents will have to vote for Biden first.

Some states have it were graveyards do not have to pay taxes on the property. Now maybe you have to pay personal taxes for profits

I believe if a cemetery closes that the owners are responsible for moving the deceased to a new burial site. I think the families of the decedents should sue the owner.
