Don't throw the baby out with the bath water... I'm looking forward to seeing them this next tour... Hope they play close to me... Last time I saw them was about a 3 hr drive to Wooster Mass, beautiful restored theater... Ended up in a hotel that was pretty scary... Kept my knife in my hand all night! But the show was great!

43 years ago I listened to Kansas on my Sony Walkman while I pushed the lawn mower and did my chores. Your music blew my mind and literally opened the door of Rock Music to me. Today, I listen to Kansas' entire catalog on my Bluetooth headphones while riding my lawn tractor, working on projects, or working out. The fact that you're still putting out amazing music--both new and remakes of old--still blows my mind! Thanks and keep rollin' Kansas!!

Kansas changed everything for me, my first taste was Song for America, then quickly picked up that album, and then the first, the '70s became the decade of Kansas. Seeing them in Boulder outdoors along with Eddy Money and highlighted by The Stones was simply epic in 78. Real musicians playing without dubs or recordings, are just the real thing. 63 years old now, but some of my favorite Kansas songs always find their way back. Thanks Steve, Phil, Kerry and all, simply an epic ride! My wife is certain I am crazy as I sing along with my phone...scares the neighbors too, as it should be, peace out.

When we compare it to the version in our heads, it is sadly missing Robbie's voice. Let his absence be a reminder of his gift and contribution to Kansas, AND that we all should share our own individual gifts with the world.... even if some, or all, can't appreciate them. I think Kansas is one of the top 3 bands of all time...a rare sentiment unfortunately. Nevertheless, I am grateful to be a part of the Kansas Family !

I want to call this the Can I Tell You Reprise! The drums and bass interact with the violin to make a much more frantic rendition here. The original showcases the guitar a bit more through the song, and has an overall more chill, organised protest concert feel, whereas this is something somebody’d keep on their earphones while enduring a police action to break up a protest.

Robby's signature phrasing defined Can I Tell You, as did Steve's voice, which was, bar none, the finest in Rock at that time, which is a bold statement. The harmonies with Robby, the bold bass notes fearlessly lobbed by Dave Hope, Kerry's progressive inclinations and spiritual explorations brought me back to hear these early albums over and over. I could play SFA six times in a row, listening for each instrument individually in turn, and still be hungry to play it again. But I'm not living in the past and am glad Kansas re-recorded this in-studio. Rich Williams' guitar is so distinctive- I was hoping for a departure from the original , with longer a part for him in this version. Kansas deserves nothing less than a fine musician like Tom Brislin on keyboards. It's unfortunate that Zak Rizvi has moved on; The Prelude Implicit was a masterpiece. I'd love to hear Apercu live; I've been waiting for decades. I'd also love to hear The Pinnacle in its entirety, and more than just snippets of Incomudro; maybe everything but the bridge and the drum solo. That said, the shows I saw on last two tours were incredible, the band is on fire! There's some interesting selections, punctuated by expected legendary standards represented on the new compilation. Many underrated, neglected albums are re-visited. Never liked Drastic Measures. Lil' 11th-grade-me spent hard-earned dollars on it in '83 and I pitched it, never to listen to it again! No hard feelings though. I stuck with you through it all, and you have given me joy beyond description. Kansas, you're beloved to me, each of you. -Lifelong fan, 'till the day I draw my last breath

Apercu is probably my favorite epic of theirs, and I'm still shocked to this day that they have _never_ played it live. Literally never. Not even in their early days when the first album hadn't come out yet. It's such a beautiful song. Steve's small vocal part in it really sold it for me. It's a shame we'll probably never hear it live.

  • @paulh6591

    @paulh6591

@@smickleberrystew8698 Yes I love Apercu- Robby's expressive violin at the end, the powerful vocal harmonies, the sublime parts with Dave Hope playing a lopey bass while Robby's violin sounds like a Japanese Kokyu. The last two minutes of the song are incredible! And thanks Nicholas for the comment; I concur. These songs are sentimental favorites of mine, as are the other progressive pieces, but I realize that the band must play the mainstream hits to please the casual fan. Just hope they don't dread playing Carry On for the umpteenth time, but just as a casual fan of, say, REO as I am would want to hear "Roll With the Changes" if I went to a concert and would be disappointed if I didn't experience it live, I'd imagine some Kansas fans full expect to hear Carry On Wayward Son at a Kansas concert. A this point they feel like they are members of my family, and I'm just glad to see them happy and healthy, which is amazing at their age. There were some shows in the early 90s where I came home from a show depressed, after seeing Steve strung out, his voice wrecked, are even more worried that Rich would keel over right there on stage. I have failed to mention Billy Greer! He's been with Kansas 35 years, and is the nicest person. And his vocals are underrated too. He's the best.

I'm actually getting a little Deep Purple action in the instrumental in this. Some of the riffs, the rhythm. The tone of the keys. I know; 6th grade Machine Head was my first rock album ever. My second a couple years later was Leftoverture. Major Kansas fan ever since. 1976 and still rocking.

Usually I think "Sacrilege" when a band "re-records' a classic track... this sounds pretty much like a respectful clone take on the original with modern production... I like it. Kansas, is after all, a band...

Was it on purpose to make it sound like a 70s Demo again, only with a new line-up? I'm a bit irritated because I'd have expected a more modern sonic approach... But still the best band in the world 🙂

🎯 That's the point, my friend. The tonal balance of the Mixing/Mastering is "bizarre". It's flat, thin, weird and even with digital artifacts exposed. Drums sounds like cellophane paper and the vocal layers nothing organic. I pointed it out here in the comments but people treated me as a hater and not a huge fan.

Miss Robby Steinhardt's voice but this sounds great. Rags's take on the violin is slightly different but terrific. Guitar parts by original member Rich Williams sound richer on this version.

Rags really pushes the beat where Robbie had a more laid-back feel. No complaints here, just noting different styles. The energy on the new recording is still evident and they don't sound like a bunch of 70-year-olds, but a band hungry to prove something. This song is still as relevant today as it was 50 years ago. Long Live Kansas!

I was there for the original, and i'm here for this one, thank God! I think they both rock, and both are masterpieces. I personally love both versions. Time brings changes, obviously. I think the current lineup is very talented, just like the original band, and they've done a great job covering this song.

Is this the ONLY song that is a new version? Or is the rest of the album stuff found on previous albums? I like it, but again… I don’t have a CD player in my home or truck so it’s not gonna happen. Wish there was a relevant media choice. Love the new version. Been a fan since 74. Hoping for new material.

It's cool.. but it's loosely tight, unlike the original which was crazy tight. Not a breathe of air between the notes. But I'm glad to hear them still kickin after 50 years

Weird production. Sounds like a attempt to emulate some of the "poor/thin" sound from the first albums, but failed miserably in this digital domain. This don't sound in any way to a 2022 state of art production. The vocals layered all in the center sounds horrible, like recorded through Zoom Meetings.

I too have "mixed" feelings about this version. I have all the early albums on vinyl and I would not call the sound/mix thin. Each album sounded better than the obe before. By the time they got to Leftoverture it was dialed in...big time.
