For those who don't get it yet, japanese folklore has a concept known as the "Living Ghost" (Ikiryou). This is a spirit that forms from a strong wish or attachment of a living person. Basically the Ayu we meet through the game is a living spirit of the comatose Ayu which kept waiting for Yuuichi year upon year so their promise could be fulfilled. Most of Kanon is filled in miracles and folklore if you start to notice. For example on top of the whole Ayu thing we have Mai with the power to heal and create demons from her subconcious, Makoto who is a Kitsune, and both Shiori and Akiko are able to pull through near-death experiences and recuperate their health.

Between this and Makoto, we had some really interesting supernatural events. I didn't understand this until I watched both sub and dub again. I had this story wrong the first time, and I now understand what happened. Kanon is a brilliant piece of fiction, and Ayu was a brave little girl.

And also, just to point out, this "ghost" Ayu was very real, and Yuuichi's interactions with her were also real.

It is like Clannad and Air because they are all Visual Novels by Key. In every one there is a main character, a guy, who meats a series of girls, and solves their problems. The games are RPGs where you have the choice of how to help people and what paths to go down. All three anime show parts of everyones paths but focus on a main female. I.E. Ayu, Nagisa, and Misuzu. These Key Adaptations are the "Holy Trinity" of sad Anime so to speak. They are different, but at the same time alike. Hope this helped people who needed questions answered.

Their set in the same universe and that’s why there so similar well I don’t know about air but Clannad and Kanon are in the same universe I’m pretty sure that Kanon is kind of like a spin off series that’s why some characters look similar and the story is similar

@@georgeorwell5147 These stories are a progression, first Air and then a more polished story in Kanon, and finally the masterpiece Clannad. It's best to watch in this order, but 90% of us watched in the reverse order.

Spoilers are in this reply ***** You see, when Ayu and Yuichi were little, before he left, she fell out of a tree. She was badly injured. In the whole anime (so far) except for the flashbacks to when they were little, Ayu has never really been with Yuichi. She's kind of just a dream, almost like Makoto was. But not quite. (MAJOR SPOILERS, IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED LOOK AWAY) In the final episode, you find that Ayu has been in the hospital the whole time from her injuries of falling out of the tree

Ayu could not just have been a dream, she interacted with all the characters. Yuichi's aunt and cousin were always worried about her after she disappeared.

This left my head scratching for 10 years until now.

I was only like half way through this anime and realized how much it was like Clannad.

I loved this anime so much. I still love him.

I still hold that 2002 did this scene better. With Ayu slowly floating up, giving him a kiss, sprouting angel wings, then vanishing in a cloud of angel feathers.

I had this sudden thought: at 6:36 when Ayu-chan asked Kyonichi if her body was warm, [SPOILER IF YOU STILL DON'T KNOW THE ENDING]: I wonder if that was an indication that her earthly body was actually still alive, hence she said 良かった. I suppose that is a hint to those who are aware of how the story arcs go (2002 and/or the VN), that we are 200% on to the Ayu ending, so the Nayuki fans can rage all they want (the rest of the episode confirms it anyway). Anyway, as much as the Nayuki fans (or whoever's fans) want their favourite to win instead of Uguu, it is very very unlikely for Uguu not to win. Uguu has been the lead female since the original game release. Nayuki is a close second based on how much she appears on the promo material, but the amount of screen time Uguu gets, Nayuki getting shafted (again) is to be expected. If we have a divergence starting from here to a Nayuki ending, it must either explicitly kill Uguu off or have her stay in the coma forever, since those familiar with the story will know that she is in actually still alive and this requires closure. If Kyoani kills her off, there has to be some hospital scene, possibly when Kyonichi and Nayuki visits Akiko. If both of them learn of Ayu's very recent death in hospital, it will have a devastating effect on Kyonichi and make a very sad ending to the story, even with Akiko, Sayuri, Mai, and Shiori walking out of the hospital unscathed. I do not know of the actual Ayu arc in the VN (only watched 2002 and 2006), but if we go by Akiko knowing that Uguu is not dead, such an ending is unavoidable. If Kyonichi never learns of her fate (killed off, or sleeping forever), it will make a very bittersweet ending for those aware of the original story (of Ayu being a coma patient). The rest of the girls obvious have a snowball's chance in hell to win.

Actually I think Makoto has a better case than Nayuki. She was alive and well the whole time... the character we thought to be her a fox. And Yuuichi had a crush on her since childhood. Oh... and they're not related (to me that carries weight). I honestly liked all the girls. Don't know why people must be fan boys/girls and choose rigid sides. If I (had) to pick one it'd be Ayu, but I find it restricting to expect Yuuichi to only be able to return love for one of them after all he's been through with them all. I adored Shiori too, and Mai after seeing her childhood/backstory. Yuuichi should be able to have his harem of all of them.

I got the feeling that Nayuki had romantic feelings for Yuichi after Yuichi asked her if she wasn't interested in any boys, and Nayuki pretty much described the boy she liked so long ago. I would of been happy if Yuichi's reunion with Makoto could of been sweeter for both, but the memories and marriage with Fox/Makoto would not carry over with real Makoto. Ayu made more sense altogether.

Ayus wish was for Yuuichi to be happy, and there was only one way to achieve that By healing his wounded friends

@jackie901 Well, both Nagisa and Ushio did die, and his right shoulder was injured in a fight with his drunken dad, plus he lost a pretty good job offer because his father was arrested.

@jsh020 xD i agree even though air was saddest to me. Clannad wasn't sad then after story episode 16 came i was like dang i seen it coming since its from Key but then again i was like dang its getting sad. episode 24 aww waste of sadness. Kanon was interesting xD.

What did Ayu say exactly? Did she say "marry me"? "Love me forever"?

+MarioLover76 Eh, dunno if you're joking, but her last wish was "Be happy". In the last episode, Shiori mentioned a hypothetical reason for the miracles that everyone was experiencing, saying that maybe someone had been granted a wish. When Yuuichi asked "Isn't it supposed to be just one wish?", Shiori suggests that it could be something like "I wish for his happiness", so a bunch of miracles that would lead to that person's happiness occurs around him.

i cant beleive theres actualy a serise much much more sadder than this...........fuckign clannad after story making me contemplate suicide. still kannon was a great serise, realy sad but thats the glory to key. honestly ill get fak for this but out of the 4 key anime ide say this was the worst but dont get me wrong its still a masterpeice, its just didnt hit me as emotionaly as air(that fuckign ending) and clannad did. still one of the bets seris ever. but this sohuld of been the legit ending
