Very nice technique! This is a demonstration (during a forestry course) of how to fell trees stuck high up in the crowns, or leaning against surrounding trees. When the cut tree slips off the stump it could be very difficult to drag it down, because it will be stuck in the soft ground/vegetation. It would take quite a strong winch to pull it down. By allowing it to slide on the lying down timber you avoid this problem. Looks a bit dangerous and probably require some training. But, if you do not want to cut down the trees that this one leaned on, this could be a useful alternative, that you could do by yourself.

That's interesting. It sounds like it could have been done quite a lot quicker if you weren't having to explain everything. I was wondering what the balance of time and effort was. The time taken to craft that wonderful slide, versus the possibly seriously hard work levering the butt end backwards along the ground, especially if at all uphill, till the crown came out of the canopy. I wish I worked somewhere that had lots of nice straight, soft conifers, so I could try this technique!
@pjerra

You could probably set it up in 10 minutes if you’re used to the technique. The first tree wouldn’t slide on the rail. So we also had to use the winch to pull it. Just uploaded a new video on the preparation.

@@pjerra I have to admit, I don't like winches that much! Expensive, heavy to carry, and potentially very dangerous if the cable snaps. So the same amount of time or less spent fashioning such a satisfying and entertaining alternative, looks more and more appealing!
