    No doubt, no matter how small is a scale model, all depend on David Damek's outstanding models. A 1/72 for a helicopter is challenging but you sir have done a piece of art. My compliments.

    A tip I have is to paint hard to reach parts before assembling. Cockpit details, dials, gauges, seatbelts, etc. When you know you won't have room after it's assembled. Sometimes I'll paint it while still on the spru. Love this guy's work! GO PLASMO!!!

    I've always favoured the Ka-50. The Ka-50/52 is an incredibly innovative helicopter with a huge number of improvements to the traditional attack helicopter design. The key differences between the Ka-50 and 52 mostly rest on the Ka-50's innovation being rolled back to allow for export to users who aren't fond of some of the new ideas. Granted the changes probably are for the better in a lot of cases, but as long as I'm not flying it I don't have to care for practical realities.

    I think the dual cockpit is much better. Allows the pilot to concentrate on not flying into the ground, and the gunner to chase targets. The US is still expecting two crew in their replacement helicopter program, FVL, and I am willing to bet that the US has better flight automation than the Russians.

  • @olivialambert4124

    @olivialambert4124

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@ScottKenny1978 There are some arguments between it and the answer is it really depends on the mission. As designed the KA-50 was looking primarily to pick off tanks with long range missile shots and secondarily to take hit and runs on infantry targets with mainly rockets and a little bit of guns. Frankly with the extra space and weight (cockpit, armour, infrastructure for gunner) I'd rather be in a 1 man helicopter considering the amount the KA-50 avionics help. In the long range anti-tank role the pilot rarely has to fly the helicopter and can mainly focus on the gunner role spotting targets as the flight systems are so effective. Its incredibly easy to hover, but similarly easy to keep to the doctrine of flying at 100-150km/h in a straight and level flight path as the avionics are mainly designed to assist with. Indeed the pilot can fly reasonably low with the avionics keeping altitude automatically, though that would be mostly for navigation. Against infantry the helicopter was intended for hit and run CAS strikes as the cold war didn't allow helicopters to sit on station due to MANPADS. Using rockets as designed, and as the Russians absolutely love using, the gunner is fairly useless anyway. With the gun the pilot can use HMS to point and shoot as required, and the mounting requires the pilot be involved in rotating the helicopter rather than a rotating mount as it provides a far more stable and accurate firing platform allowing the cannon to more effectively take out APCs and trucks from outside return fire range. A gunner would only be used for spotting targets, and that was intended to be done at long range where straight and level flying (great for autopilot) is the doctrine anyway. Of course the world shifted dramatically a decade after the helicopter was designed, longer for the Russian. Now the mission is primarily flying circles as top cover around a convoy, infantry, or important area whilst spotting and gunning threats, along with a very dynamic line of battle and far less tolerance for collateral damage. For this a gunner is absolutely needed just for tracking fast moving friendly soldiers alone, and a gunner is almost demanded for the close range, high angle off, accurate shots the modern battlespace needs. This means the KA-50 gun had to be changed to a more conventional style, the camera needed the ability to look at a miles larger angle, and suddenly instant pilot controls aren't absolutely required for every weapon system the aircraft uses unlike before. Basically the world is a different place. At the time and with the doctrine used both by American and Russian pilots the single pilot design was absolutely a big step in the right direction. As we can see with fixed wing aircraft America are slow to drop the unnecessary crew (eg. F-18) but I believe they absolutely would have had the mission stayed the same. The single pilot design was incredibly innovative and Russia made a major step forwards with it. As for flight control computers, you add what is required for the mission. With two crew a highly automated flight control system isn't required and so you'd very much expect a single pilot helicopter to have a significantly better system. As the mission changed everyone put more emphasis on the cannon and sensors with Russia making huge modifications towards both systems and America using extra ammo boxes strapped to the side as routine equipment. Its important not to miss all the historical context which made the single seat attack helicopter such a great idea.

    @@olivialambert4124 my favorite snicker about the FVL program is that one design is the kamov coaxial rotor set, along with a pusher prop. Coaxial rotors allows greater lift, and higher speed because you don't lose all the lift on one side of the helo when airspeed approaches rotor tip speed.
