Kamov Ka-26 flight Nyíregyháza airport (HA-MCH)

This Kamov Ka-26 was manufactured in Kumertau, Soviet Russia. Before came to Hungary she was an agricultural helicopter in German Democratic Republic. German mechanics took care of her, so she was very well maintained and came to Hungary in very good condition.
She was transferred to Hungary in 1991, than she was flying in a small aviation company with HA-MCI, southwest Hungary, near Nagyatád. In 2010 another aviation company stations Nyíregyháza airport bought her and she still fly with them.
The day when I recorded this video was a pilot license renewal day at Nyíregyháza airport. During the day HA-MCH and HA-MZN operated at the airport and pilots could make check-rounds with them.
The mechanic twisted the engines with a wrench, because during the night in radial engines the oil flows down into the lower cylinders and the temperature is low, the oil become solid so it has to be moved. The startub was pretty long one, so the mechanics had to contact a compressed air-tank. The helicopter uses compressed air to start the engines.
• Kamov Ka-26 flight Nyí...
During the day pilots flew circles around the airport and made "touch and go"s to the runway.
• Kamov Ka-26 flight Nyí...
My another video from this day about HA-MZN:
• Kamov Ka-26 test fligh...
Nyíregyháza airport is a civil airport North-East Hungary. This airport was the centre of Hungarian pilot traing so it has long concrete runway. After University of Nyíregyháza's Pilot specialization began to deteriorate the airport transformed to an agricultural aircraft station.
Now it is full of Antonov An-2 and Kamov Ka-26 wrecks.
2010 óta Nyíregyháza központtal végez mezőgazdasági repüléseket a térségben.
Aznap amikor a felvételek készültek két Kamov Ka-26 (HA-MZN, HA-MCH) végzett pilóta szakszolgálati engedélyhosszabbító repüléseket a Nyíregyházi Repülőtéren.
Miután mindkét motor át lett forgatva a főszerelő megkezdte a motorok indítását. Igen hosszúra sikeredett az indítási procedúra, több levegőpalackot is elhasznált a gép. A Kamov Ka-26 sűrített levegőt használ önindítóként a motorok beindítására, melyet saját kompresszorával termel, de indítás közben sokszor külső levegőpalack csatlakoztatása is szükséges.
• Kamov Ka-26 flight Nyí...
A nap folyamán a gép iskolaköröket repült a reptér körül és átstartokat hajtott végre a kifutópályán.
• Kamov Ka-26 flight Nyí...
Aznap a másik Kamov Ka-26-ról(HA-MZN) készült videóm:
• Kamov Ka-26 test fligh...
Ahogy a Nyíregyházi Egyetem pilóta kara elkezdett leépülni a repülőtér mezőgazdasági légijárművek bázisává alakult.

Everyone gets excited about the "old school" radial engines. What interests me is how advanced the fuselage is. Even today, it is useful as one can attach whatever module to the machine for a specific purpose. Medevac, cargo, passenger, spraying, etc. Ahead of its time back then!

It's amazing how maneuverable this helicopter is! The counter-rotating, rotor system is amazing design in itself! I still wonder why the clutch engages the rotors so soon, after the engines fire up?

  • @oscar_charlie

    @oscar_charlie

    5 жыл бұрын

The engines are started with the transmission clutch engaged to prevent overspeeding during start. There is very little throttle control due to the way these engines are started, and if started with no load they can overspeed, usually shattering the cooling fan in the process, before the engine itself would get damaged.

Dat Dang I was told that these Russian Radial Piston engines use air for starting because air will always work well at very , very cold temperatures. Batteries and electrical starters degrade quite a bit at low temps and must be kept from freezing. Interestingly, many large turbojet or turbofan engines are also started by compressed air via a dedicated turbine on a cart or an onboard turbine APU. Some military jet engines use a chemical gas generator cartridge for instant startup. It’s interesting to me that the cooling fan on the engine installation in this helicopter turns so fast that at full power it screams like an early turbo jet engine. I read somewhere that the fan is made of cast iron.

The oscillations visible from around 3.25 are "PIO", Pilot Induced Oscillations, stemming from the pilot overcorrecting his steering input. PIO are very easily observable on tail rotor helos, when you see guys happily flying along wagging the tailboom from side to side.

“Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder.” That works for women and cars. Anything, actually. I think this is a gorgeous helicopter. Genius design. Twin Radial Engines. Cool Sounds. Very stable and maneuverable. There is some incredible footage of a standard” orange/yellow Ka-26 crop dusting an undulating Sunflower field. At a distance, it looks almost exactly like the sunflowers. Beautiful.
