Here's my thought on the last fight: during the last couple episodes of the show the director/writer decided to go against the toku trope of having the fight scene as the focus and really focus on the character development of the cast that's why we see shorter fights. The final fight was short but showed the emotion that Yusuke was hiding from his friends. The battle wasn't meant to be a heroic one nor flashy unlike other toku finales, it's meant to show the brutality of not only the current situation but also the countless deaths that lead up to the showdown. Throughout the show, Yusuke expressed that he hated violence and it brings pain to him even if it was necessary to protect other. In the end Yusuke is crying from all the violence and death that have occurred meanwhile, Deguva is smiling and enjoying that someone finally brought him the fight that he always wished for. It showed that even 2 beings with the ultimate power at their fingertips still end up fighting like animals

Kuuga really did save Kamen Riders and restarting a great legend today. I can see why he was apart of KR Decade so much.

I don't know if you noticed, but because of Godai being such a kindhearted man who never liked fighting for the fun of it his control of Ultimate showed how he will not succumb to the will that Daguva planned out which was to have him become what the Gurongi were. Monsters who killed for satisfaction. Daguva was so happy in thinking it was being fulfilled while fighting in civilian form against Godai. In that fight you can see Godai's sadness fighting against Daguva as he fears of what Daguva wished for coming true. In the 2nd Episode of Kuuga he mentioned he hated the feeling he had when fighting against the first Gurongi enemy and in the epilogue he even continues to look upon his fist after that fateful fight. In the end though he fulfilled his promise to protect everyone's smile while somewhat losing his own.

Great review. I think I agree with almost everything you said (except I like the final fight). I would like to add some things. Firstly, I just really love Yusuke's character. I have never seen such a silly/light-hearted character work so well before. In any other show I would've called it childish (like in OOO) but due to the tone and character interactions in this show it feels near perfect. I also love how, especially near the end of the show, we can tell that he struggles sometimes to keep up his positivity, but he manages it for the sake of everybody else. Secondly, I can't even describe how great of a reboot this is. As someone who had only seen Showa before it, I found the way they incorporated the old tropes and ideas with many new ones to be almost perfection. You already talked about the bike, but another great example is the rider kick. They start off with having an in-universe explanation for why he finishes off with a kick, but at that point it still has no resemblance to the kicks of old. However, they have this brilliant arc where Godai realizes that he needs a stronger kick, and so he uses his intuition to find a natural way to boost it's power, creating a much more familiar kick. The suit is also great. It's familiar enough to still look "Kamen Rider" but just new enough to stand out. The removal of the muffler represent that pretty well.

How does that work in the case of Accel?

What I loved about Kuuga is how Godai underwent a subtle charecter development that you dont notice around the arc when he beats a monster savagely I also think the reason why Godai never gave in to the Darkness of Mighty is because he doesnt have a long history with the Gronji like the Original Kuuga. I feel he acknowledge he would lose himself like he did in the episodes where he savagely defeats the Gronji. What he did before the fight I feel it was his way of reminding himself what is at stake, what he is fighting to protect, what Kuuga means to them, why his been doing this, where he wants to go back to, and finally that no matter what he is himself. The original Kuuga had to see the gronji terrorise his people and had to take a abrupt change in his life while Godai may be in the same position I feel the biggest difference was the fact Godai is always keeping protecting in mind while the original Kuuga may of have slowly become more vindictive againts the Gronji. This is just my speculation tbh. The charecters have the best dynamic since they are all learning from each other and getting to know each other forming new bonds thanks to Godai. They are all very enjoyable. The Villians have some depth to them and I think the last episode is the best as we can see how they where all impacted by Godai and I really enjoyed the series.

Then when you realized that the gegeru was held because the grongi was oppressed by Daguva, and that's the only way Daguva would be willing to fight any of them. Prior to the few last gegerus, it was mentioned that Daguva has been killing weaker grongis by the bunch. He would kill them all, then revive them back until he found one strong enough to slake his thirst for a good fight. Killing people by the hundreds for it is wrong, yes, but when you're faced with extinction, you'll feel that you're justified to do anything to survive.

KR Decade introduced me to Kuuga and finally YEARS later I watched it and was blown away by how great it was. Decade's version was a very pale imitation compared to the original. It is sad that Kuuga's original actor never reprised the role again. The story and characters really drive the show. Plus, there's even a Kuuga manga but that focuses on a new character with a new belt.

One thing that I feel you don't touch upon is one of my favorite parts of Kuuga which is something I just realized in my latest rewatch (which is the third) and that is the subtlety of Godai's character. Godai seems to be carefree for most of the series but he's just as impacted as the rest of the world with the Gurongi situation and how they portrayed this is by showing him not smiling on his own and only when there're people around to not worry them. *Emotions* made this apparent but I feel there's already the seeds to it since the Me group was just introduced. This really shows Godai's determination and strength in what he's willing to sacrifice for the sake of others.

Kuuga is basically a cop drama with superheros and I love it.

Kuuga was pretty good, and I like the mature take of this season. I also love the characters, and you can just really care for them.

There was a reason as to why the final fight was them punching. Over a decade after the series ended we actually get to see the power of Ultimate Kuuga's Ultimate Kick in one of the Climax Heroes game. His kick was so powerful it would eradicate the Earth which explains why the text in Linto says that the world will be covered in darkness. Like no joke. The scene of his Ultimate Kick in the game shows him kicking the opponent like any Rider Kick would, the camera zooms out into space and we see the whole world on fire with that Linto symbol that appears where Kuuga kicks them. Only the symbol can be seen while in space. The fact that they went with fist fight showed Yusuke not wanting to use those powers shows he had full control of the power. There was even a novel where Kuuga changed into Super Rising Ultimate thanks to Stronger's Den Shock and OOO Shauta Combo's whips where they electrocuted him in his Rising Ultimate. The explosion blast was so massive it dried out Earth, and half of Venus and Mars. And the design is awesome. The Amadam Jewel in the Arcle and his eyes turn gold too. Btw, since you watched Kuuga already, time for some Agito. It's an indirect sequel to Kuuga since they made mention of him except they call him Unidentified Lifeform #4.

After watching Kuuga, no other rider series I watched matched its level that I would drop it. It was just that good. I really want them to make something just like Kuuga again.

I saw the entire Kuuga for the first time a few months ago and I LOVE IT 😍😁. This entire season is awesome and excelent in many senses!

First off, if in the US be sure to check out the official release of Kamen Rider Kuuga. And I just gotta say I love kamen rider kuuga and it is a very memorable tokusatsu show, I love the dynamic cinematography and how everything sorta feels like I'm watchin a normal drama show. This show is straight up raw when it comes to villain and heroic moments and sorta feels like it is the superman of Kamen Rider tbh and not just from Godai's pureness as a hero. This show is pretty much very great if you want to see a RAW HERO SHOW with characters you feel need to be PROTECCTED because kuuga uses a ton of fictional serial killer movie vibes except with a hero that runs over the killer with a motorcycle and actually beats em up. And I gotta say Kuuga makes me acknowledge how the more grounded colors used for villain suits doesn't mean it would look bland or unmemorable, granted I don't remember the grongi names too much like something og kr has like Unicornos but the designs are just very good in showing the essential intimidation and risk they hold with the functions they have in secret until it's potentially too late.

@Randomness 86 Uhhh? Shout Factory currently has the rights to Kamen Rider and Kamen Rider Kuuga with tons of Ultraman shows on the way. And kamen rider was trending on twitter for 1 day from the heisei generations movie stream. It's not very popular but it's steadily getting there.

@Randomness 86 you should just search an online thread or a video about it. basic gist is power rangers is too popular to have a worthy rival, kamen rider failed in sales for both adaptations, tsuburaya was in lawsuit hell to take their brand Ultraman to its full potential overseas, overtime adaptations are wavering out in interest for just translated works of the original material due to the internet. And then it just stagnated into a whole decade of tokusatsu being seen as a regional niche.

Just a couple quick notes on the Grongi Langauge Shout Factory have them fully subbed in there release which lines up with later DVD/Blu-Ray releases that had the language translated to Japanese. Also, technically Kuuga is the clone of Zeba and the Grongi in general as his belt contains an Amadam stone that the Grongi naturally have. All the Ultimate flashbacks are technically vision and warning of Kuuga's power as if he succumbs to the darkness like he was on the brink of with Jaraji. If he did he would become a monster exactly like Zeba and lose himself to this power. I do wish the fight had more to it but I did end up liking how this was not fancy and was a knockdown drag out fight as Godai once more has to take a life so other aren't hurt.

One of the reasons that the fight is so short is that scheduling filming on a mountain in winter is very hard.

I liked Kuuga, especially for the bike scenes and detective elements. The later I feel was executed better then in say Double. But part of me still wishes ZO/J had a series of their own in the mid 90's, just to help bridge the two era's.

This was and is still in my top 10. I can actually remember when the first time I watched this and I cried on certain fights. Mainly the final fight with Dagvrua. I never thought I would cry in a Kamen Rider show before at that time. But first time for everything.

Joe Odagiri is the highlight of the show, I've heard that working on the show wasn't a pleasant experience for him but he didn't let that affect his performance, he was a true professional.

Kuuga will forever be our first love.

For rider potential, imagine Inchijo becomes Daguva which would make the ending more impactful.

I can agree Kuugas ending was a bit rushed, Black form only got one fight if that before upgrading to the final form, but at that point all that was left was Daguva, and the final episode about all the people whose hearts were touched by Godai was nice

Ah yes, Kuuga. One of my favorite shows in KR. In your Rider Potential, I would have love to see Daguva observing Kuuga. Maybe even have them meet in civilian form, but of course Kuuga doesn’t know who Daguva is. Once he knows, Kuuga tries to fight, only for Daguva to stop him because he’s too strong. In some of the meetings, I would love to see him say to American!Godai about how humanity is corrupt. Hell, you can even make Daguva observe humanity and he is motivated to unleash the Ultimate Darkness even more. In short, Daguva should be the Heath Ledger Joker to Kuuga. Ultimate should be as is, only used in the final battle. Amazing Mighty.... well, I would to see him vs Daguva in your version of Rider Potential. What’s scary about that battle is that not only did Daguva curb-stomp the fuck out of Kuuga and damaged the Arcle, after that he literally burned 30,000 people for the evulz. 30,000. No really, it’s why they skipped the battle of Amazing Mighty vs Daguva.

Kuuga will always be a masterpiece after 20 years. It is my all time favorite Heisei Kamen Rider Series, and favorite Tokusatsu. Wouldn't you agree, Thomas?

Kuuga was legendary in its time and I watched it wen I was younger and to be honest it was way darker then I would have expected as a kid but watching it now again with my brother who’s never watched any toku before he’s loving it and I am so happy that he is

Great video, perfectly sums up what's to love about Kuuga. When it was first established that Ichijou was an officer, I was worried he was going to be constantly in the way, a minor threat but a major annoyance to the protagonist like most police characters are around heroes. I was so, unbelievably relieved that he was an actual character that actually complemented Yusuke in such a refreshing way that they were almost equal. They bounced off of each other so well, and created such a comfortable narrative of the two being similar that it all comes full circle in the end with Ichijou having witnessed Kuuga's first and last transformation... My only problems with Kuuga as a whole is the repetitive pacing in some episodes. Someone is sad > Kuuga Vs. Grongi > Kuuga loses and is in Growing Form, can't transform for two hours > Someone is still sad > Someone calls Yusuke and tells him > Yusuke finds sad person and gives them a pep talk & Thumbs Up > Ichijou calls Yusuke and tells him the Grongi is back > 1 minute Rematch where Kuuga wins = Roll Credits. That and how it doesn't keep the pacing for certain characters consistent... Like one episode Nana is crying, destroyed over the off-screen death of her drama teacher. The very next episode she's fully back to normal again without anyone even talking to her about it. Then 10 episodes later she wants to kill someone for taunting her about the death, and ran out in the middle of her serious conversation with Tamasaburo as he was confiding in her about her feelings, as if it was going to be resolved right away... Leading to the aforementioned repetitive pacing. Which THEN only got followed by like 5 minutes of Nana telling that girl "I have something to say to you" and then Cutting between her blank, wordless stares and Kuuga punching a Grongi in slow motion before the episode ends. Kuuga is my favorite series, favorite Rider, and Yusuke is my favorite protagonist... But sometimes Kuuga's strongest aspect (The characters) is it's most frustrating to watch.

Half way through this series and I still have to say, kuuga is my favourite.

Nice you gave your avatar upgrade, also Kuuga is a damn good show. Everything just clicks and while I’m used to Modern Riders with their CGI, there’s something about Kuuga that just works

Fun Fact Kuuga premiered on Jan 30th 2000 which happens to be my second birthday a fact that makes Kuuga one of my favorite riders and makes me love Kamen Rider even more

WTF ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! FINISH KAMEN RIDER KUUGA!

I absolutely loved the final fight of Kuuga. A man wearing all black (both in transformation and in actual clothes) who's fighting to protect everyone's smiles going up against a man wearing all white who is fighting for his own smile. (With going by dialogue from a previous scene, rather than the typical meaning of good and evil, the color white can be interpreted as happiness and black the absence of it, so again a man currently without happiness fighting for the sake of the happiness of others against a man fighting for his own happiness) And then making it even more effective with how Godai is fighting hating every second of it (and being noticeably upset without a smile on his face) while Daguva is fighting with a huge smile, constantly laughing, and seemingly having the time of his life. I love foils in stories, and while this foil wasn't set up much I was amazed at how well they could pull it off. Sure the fight could've been cooler, but imo from a story and thematic point of view it was amazing.

I just recently got into kamen rider. I’ve only seen zo, j, amazon, black, and kuuga but I’ve been enjoying the franchise so far. I really liked this season. The world building in kuuga was very well done. I think I’ll be watching super-1 next. Any recommendations when it comes to heisei rider seasons would be appreciated.

Kuuga is always interesting and hell its quite dark sometimes for a series that kickstart the heisei era rider. What i like about kuuga is that in order to achieve new form, he had to train either to overcome it's power ( like when he got pegasus form ) or learn how to use it properly ( when he got dragon form). Dont forget the bike stunts, which is the highlight for this series to me since we wont get it that much in later seasons since japanese traffic rule

@@rafikyulardi4797 well it was 2000, compare to like 2001 and onwards, the rule wasn't as strict compared to that time like yes sure some series also still use their ridermachine like kabuto ( i think that use it the most) but starting like in heisei phase 2 its become obvious thag we saw them without the ridermachine i mean zero one the lasf time we saw him use his bike was like in the movie and just now he used it again at the zero one and thouser coop

Also when I was a kid I was able to see the spanish dub of Kuuga and fell in love with the series. I think it aired at the same time Lightspeed Rescue aired in spanish or the English version.

@@kelseysarmentio5158 No it doesn't, as thay is only the S.I.C storyline it has to be within the Kuuga series run itself such as how Rising Ultimate is only considered in Decade before being applied to Godai in Wizards finale

I'm in the middle of the show but I don't mind spoilers

I think what made me love Kuuga so much is already explained by you. Kuuga felt very different and feels like an in between of Showa and Heisei(duh moment). 1971 Kamen Rider, Black, Kuuga, Den-O, Build, you can feel how different each show is. The closest I can say Kuuga felt is like the Amazon Prime series but less cynical.

9:19 Funny because he becomes Kamen Rider G1 in the manga (that is a fusion and reboot of Kuuga and Agito worlds)

Kuuga is pretty much Toei answer to Ultraman Tiga even taking some expects from Tiga ancient theme for it.

Honestly this season has my favourite "dark version of the main rider" trope, because they aren't just recolours of the same suit, they are monsters with rider -like powers, it's awesome

I was so close to quitting this season and by the time I finished it, I wish I did earlier.

kuga & agito still waaay cooler than today's kamen rider, they focus to much on selling toys nowday than the actual rider show itself

Kuuga’s police force is one of the best in media, while Agito…. Errrrr

I wouldn't say your WRONG cause I mean no disrespect and I really REALLY appreciate u making this video but I just wanted to add my thoughts on daguva. While it would seem that daguva just doesn't care about anything I think there's at least ONE thing that her cares about and stands out for him. For one I like that he's always smiling and all giddy like godai but for all the wrong reasons. I think what he's always wanted was an equal. A rival. That's why whenever he interacted with kuuga he'd just push him down or beat him up and not kill him right away cause he could've if we wanted to. That's also why all the grongi want to become stronger so they could have a chance to defeat daguva and become the new leader of the grongi (who stated he really wanted that to happen). That's also why he killed like a hundred grongi off screen cause they were to weak. That's why I really love the final fight between him and godai in his ultimate form and I really love daguva and the villains and MAN I love this show! Also daguva was laughing at the end because he thought godai had succumbed to the dark side just like him but NO! Daguva died and godai ended up proving him wrong and... ULTIMATELY defeated the grongi.

If you ask me, the last time Kamen Rider is on tv and as a actual Kamen Rider is Decade but the last True Rider is Kabuto(Insect, dark, gloomy horror inspired).

My favorite kamen rider

Kuuga is my favorite Heisei Phase 1 Rider.

In the final fight against Daguva, I would have liked to see Kuuga turn Evil for a minute. If I was directing the fight this is how it would go: Daguva is beating the sh*t out of Kuuga and then as Daguva is about to land the finishing blow, Kuuga taps into his Dark Power and turn into Evil Kuuga. Then the fight continues to show how overpowered Evil Kuuga is and that Daguva doesn't stand a chance. They fight for awhile where Evil Kuuga is in the offensive and Daguva in the defensive. As Kuuga is about to kill Daguva, then Ichijo; who was present at the fight scene remembers how Godai told him to "shoot Kuuga if he somehow turns evil" and so Ichijo shot at him. Evil Kuuga got pissed and turns his attention to Ichijo. At this moment, the darkness is already taking over Kuuga's body and Godai has no control over this form and so Evil Kuuga launches toward Ichijo and tries to kill him. As Evil Kuuga is about to destroy Ichijo, his memories and feelings of their friendship is strong enough to help Godai take back control over his body. Godai is finally back in control and then continues to land his finishing blow on Daguva. GG Ez.

Kuuga is one of my favorite Kamen Rider Series. It's slow but it's worth the investment. On Amazing Mighty, I heard Ultimate Form was supposed to debut during the last Go Gadoru Ba fight but the Crew wanted to not use Ultimate Form until the N-Daguva-Zeba fight so they created Amazing Mighty at the last minute.

Jonathan Chen That’s a pretty smart move, I’ll say. Amazing Mighty feels like Godai trying to tap into a stronger form without using Ultimate, which is too dangerous.

I would agree with you on what I could understand which was not A lot of the video but one thing I do understand is the fact that the pacing was too slow I mean just have a fight that’s it plot what is that I mean you’re basically superheroes so all you need to do is attack The bad guys

I figure by the time i get around to watching Kuuga i'll have forgotten any spoilers.

this was the only series that actually a brutal beat down showing the villains bleeding and stuff

daguva's biuld up is amazing. it works paralel with godai's journey. the reveal of daguva is kuuga's copy is just perfect rising mighty can do nuke kick, and amazing mighty is 10x stronger than rising mighty, and daguva is able to kick amazing mighty's ass easily + kills all people on that area. think about godai'a mental state at that last episode he say goodbye to all his friend, readied himself to a suicide mission to save the world ultimate kuuga doesn't come to fight daguva he came to kill daguva asap he even didn't say a word when face to face with daguva at that point he doesn't have time to analize, waver or lose control. every punch and kicks that he throws are meant to kill daguva... and that's why i love KUUGA ULTIMATE not like den-o, decade, oz, etc. that have useless final form and only using "plot power" or even hasn't do henshin when come face to face with the final villain.

To be honest i like this show like its very simple like the rider kick and the suit but kinda dissapointed because the main actor of kuuga hate being kuuga in the show also his cast aswell i though he was gonna show up in the KM: Heisei final generation

It's not so much his dislike of Kuuga so much as it's his dislike of Tokusatsu. He's supposedly down for reprising his role, but only if it was a standalone Kuuga project and not a crossover.

What best about Kuuga and Agito is when they Henshin, they less talk and more action

Also, the reason why you won't see Godai as a human in the Rider universe is because.... well... Jo Odagiri is a MASSIVE STAR in Japan and I don't think he'd want to come back to that. I mean, I'm surprised that the tokusatsu fandom is totally unaware that he's a serious dramatic actor and that Kuuga was his first big role before he ascended into international stardom.

Wrong, kuuga is way much darker than Amazons. Amazons have a lot of gore, but doesnt came close to kuuga. 2nd season isnt really doing good as the first one.

I've seen Kuuga and Blade =)

As much as I admire Kuuga as the Kickstarter of the Heisei Rider trope, I also have my own personal nitpicks and unpopular opinions as well about Kuuga: - some of the sequences made me sleepy and yawn really hard so much that I had to skip it to the episodes' main fight scenes. I understand that this is Takatera's stylistic choices, but I kinda doubt that it would really sell in my own taste for modern KR shows, at least. - whenever the Gurongis are speaking in their own language in front of the protagonists, ABSOLUTELY NONE of them complained about it. Like seriously, they're too kind for their own good in this front. They could've at least ask "WHAT!?" out loud whenever they hear it or "I don't understand!" or "speak human, please!" The MEME potential is so high, here! - the same thing about Amazing Mighty and Ultimate forms. Yeah. It would be a let down if it's being released for today's market for me, especially after so many build ups it led to. I think Takatera also mentioned that he decided to put Ultimate Form in the last episode because he doesn't want to disappoint the viewers, but personally, I find it rather the other way around, in which sadly we don't get to see those forms' true power levels. So all in all, Kuuga is a masterpiece and head - scratching at the same time. :v

Alfian Fawzi Would be awesome seeing both Ultimate Kuuga and Daguva unleash their full power at each other, then still fighting even at their civilian form. What made the fight work was that Godai is crying because he is barely hanging on to his humanity while Daguva is laughing his ass off because not only is he enjoying the fight, he wants Godai to become as bad as him.

Kuuga is still the greatest Rider of all time

Syarif NM Actually, Daguva has a reason why he’s doing this. He created the Gegeru because he wants to cause chaos not only for the sake of it but also because he wants to make humanity as evil as he is. That’s why he’s laughing his ass off because he wants to make Godai as corrupt as he is. In short, Daguva is Heath Ledger Joker. For the Overlord of Darkness, he at first wants to kill Agitos because he thinks humanity is fine as is, but then later on he wants to kill off humanity and start anew because he thinks humanity has evolved too much from his point of view.

@@justinesun631 daguba has no reason to kill other grongi as well he might created gegeru to cause chaos but he has no backstory what so ever, overlord of darkness was stupid villain how can god itself fight their creation in the first place as much as i love kuuga and agito especially godai i do love him so much he was my role model when i was kid but when i rewatched it unlike souchi tsugami godai didnt have good character development, i mean godai not kuuga. finally both of them had weak ending, till this day i cant accept those stupid ending for kuuga and agito. kabuto is good example for better ending and villain true intention even though the story itself might not the best

Syarif NM Actually, he has a reason to kill other Grongi. He despises the weak hence why he killed off most of the Grongi. Also if they dare use his power. And how? Well, Daguva’s Amadam was shattered, hence why he’s incomplete until episode 47. The moment he hears other people uses his power, he kills them.
