Samurai rising is a really good book to read if you’re trying to learn more about the war aspect of the Kamakura period. It’s about the fight for power between the Minamoto and the tiara, specifically it is about a samurai from the Minamoto (yotshisune).

Kamakura period ended in the brutal fashion(by Ashikaga clan which was a descendant of Minamoto clan). Ashikaga didn't save a single soul, the rumor has said that you can still find bones of victims in the sand of Kamakura beach even today. The family ruled in that period was Houjo(as Shikken), not Minamoto. All Minamoto family was killed by Houjo clan(the family wife, Masako, of Yoritomo came from) soon after Yoritomo had died.
