Parrot OS is a better distro for day to day usage and pentesting stuff. In fact, Kali devs don't recommend using their distro for normal usage because of security problems.

I'd love to see your take on the "Home Desktop" spin of Parrot OS. Lots of security, but without most of the pen testing tools (still has some defensive tools I think).

just get debian with cinnamon. you can get it there in 20 minutes. i will say tho, the ova for security edition is great if you don't feel like doing setup and you use it in a vm
Judging by what it's used for, this is an educational distro more than anything. Offensive security maintains it for its courses and certs, it makes support and troubleshooting simpler. When there's a known issue with compiling some old kernel exploit, there's also a kali-specific solution on the forums.

I use it because I am not yet familiar with a lot of tools - so instead of installing every one, it is convenient to have them in one place.
Very friendly UI. The paranoid might think this is an FBI honeypot for entrapment though. Thanks DT!
The other day i saw Parrot Os has a "home edition" that is not designed for pentesting but for privacy on a production machine. I thought it coukd be interesting to see what a distribution built on that premise can bring to the table that others don't. What kind of softwarr they propose, etc.
Contrary to popular belief, I use bare metal kali linux gnome desktop as a daily drive and I am very satisfied. Thanks for the video. Love from Türkiye ❤

As long as you installed it right and used kali-tweaks to harden it. Kali is made with pentesting in mind, and as such opens itself up to certain vulnerabilities. Read the official kali FAQ if you haven't already.
installing the blackarch keyring on an arch install is a better option for pentesting. i flip lop between that and parrot sec. btw, the deal with chromium might be because you need to launch it through burpsuite

What do you do for impacket tools?? Or netexec for example. Other tools like my fuzzers and python scripts work fine but my AD pentest tools are really bad and they keep breaking on my arch install

Great video DT
kali being based on testing explains a lot. last time i used it i ended up with a major break somewhere (i think it was postgreSQL) or it couldve possibly been that xz backdoor messing with it since it was right around that time. i started learning it as a hobby, but isnt really my main focus on linux.
i literally just got done playing around with kali this past week on bare metal and went straight back to debian
The secret password for the dt-user dad-joke still cracks me up
Hey DT, could you do a video on installing a distro like this with the manual partitioning option and maybe also some crazy dual boot setup of a few favourite distros? Also I have a question about swap partition. I have read in the past that one must set the swap partition size to equal the total RAM size for best performance. Is this a myth or true?
there was a moment i dug Kali's Xfce implementation so much i decided to recreate it on my MX Linux installation. it turned out very practical, although i stopped using it when i switched to EndeavourOS and wanted something different
DT .. great title 💯💯
The installer is almost the exact replica of normal debian.

You really shouldn't run Kali daily as a user. It's a pentesting focussed distro and as such comes with some insecurities and isn't very safe to use for a normal daily user. You can feel cooler using Arch, and get the same softwares & same wallpapers and themes.
Nice distro. I have the iso, but I never installed it. I have no use for it, just like you, but this is a great video.
If looking for a distro to run in Windows WSL 2.0, Kali is great as it comes without all the tools and so is ultra light weight. Just add what you need on top of that. As for Kali itself, as it says on the pack, it is ultra quiet on the network. It doesn't spam out heaps of random network traffic which is nice in certain scenarios, e.g. where you are trying to actually monitor network traffic. It's a great distro to have on a bootable USB for those unexpected situations as it has tools for almost everything.
I messed around with Kali Linux while doing hack the box challenges. It's pretty great for that. It gets a bad name because of the edge lords who run it as a daily driver because they think it makes them a hacker.
I'm only on Kali because I've watched Mr. Robot and thought it looked cool.
More distros with installers need to have an option to create the home partition separately as an automated option, same for swap.
Offtopic video idea: Would you like to take a quick look at Crystal Linux? It's an Arch based distro. First released on 2022 so it's fairly new.
you should do a video, gaming on kali linux
I wanted to say thanks for reviewing Kali as before your demo I was really HATING GNOME for not having something as basic as an applications menu which I found could be enabled via the extensions. I'm currently trying to strip away all the noncritical functionality of KDE wayland as attempts to run wayland distros other than GNOME/KDE in VirtualBox have been a waste of time. It seems VirtualBox is only supporting distros which support xwayland and from what I've found that is limited to GNOME and KDE. I have a Debian plasma-desktop installation down to about 500MB of RAM and hope for similar success with GNOME. Either distro overcomes X keystroke sharing but my guess is GNOME is a bit more stable as it has been battling X compatibility issues since 2015. A video where you streamline GNOME and/or KDE or even better build them up the ARCH way and install a windows manager like IceWM on top of the wayland infrastructure would be most excellent.
what theme is that
Well , you need to create content for script kiddies

I'll never understand the absolute venom kali gets from the Linux community. Most people who keep repeating that its "just for script kiddies" misses the mark and it sounds more like people piling on more vitriol when they have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. (No, im not referring to DT, but definitely people in these comments and in forums I've read) Can script kiddies use it? Yes. However, as a training tool, there is no better distro. Period. I used it to learn digital forensics and I model all my other environments around Kali now. That being said, Parrot is a better pentesting tool in my opinion. To be perfectly honest, any distro can double as a pentesting distro. The thing about scripting tools is that they exist to make the life of a cybersecurity analyst easier. I simply don't have time to create original scripts every single time i need them. Ill write a few that are necessary for specific use cases but of they work out of the box, there's no shame in using them. If you sit in your basement and have all the time in the world to code your own apps and write your own scripts. Good for you. But it's a waste of time imo, especially if you don't need to.

Kali is NOT really a Distro!(like FISH isn't really a shell!) It is a assembly of penetration tools, meant to be used as that and NOT a daily driver distribution. Those who use it as a daily driver are the same people who would try to represent themselves in a felony court case--- it can be done, but it is HIGHLY not recommended!
