Judging by what it's used for, this is an educational distro more than anything. Offensive security maintains it for its courses and certs, it makes support and troubleshooting simpler. When there's a known issue with compiling some old kernel exploit, there's also a kali-specific solution on the forums.

The other day i saw Parrot Os has a "home edition" that is not designed for pentesting but for privacy on a production machine. I thought it coukd be interesting to see what a distribution built on that premise can bring to the table that others don't. What kind of softwarr they propose, etc.

Also I have a question about swap partition. I have read in the past that one must set the swap partition size to equal the total RAM size for best performance. Is this a myth or true?

If looking for a distro to run in Windows WSL 2.0, Kali is great as it comes without all the tools and so is ultra light weight. Just add what you need on top of that. As for Kali itself, as it says on the pack, it is ultra quiet on the network. It doesn't spam out heaps of random network traffic which is nice in certain scenarios, e.g. where you are trying to actually monitor network traffic. It's a great distro to have on a bootable USB for those unexpected situations as it has tools for almost everything.

I wanted to say thanks for reviewing Kali as before your demo I was really HATING GNOME for not having something as basic as an applications menu which I found could be enabled via the extensions. I'm currently trying to strip away all the noncritical functionality of KDE wayland as attempts to run wayland distros other than GNOME/KDE in VirtualBox have been a waste of time. It seems VirtualBox is only supporting distros which support xwayland and from what I've found that is limited to GNOME and KDE. I have a Debian plasma-desktop installation down to about 500MB of RAM and hope for similar success with GNOME. Either distro overcomes X keystroke sharing but my guess is GNOME is a bit more stable as it has been battling X compatibility issues since 2015. A video where you streamline GNOME and/or KDE or even better build them up the ARCH way and install a windows manager like IceWM on top of the wayland infrastructure would be most excellent.

I'll never understand the absolute venom kali gets from the Linux community. Most people who keep repeating that its "just for script kiddies" misses the mark and it sounds more like people piling on more vitriol when they have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. (No, im not referring to DT, but definitely people in these comments and in forums I've read) Can script kiddies use it? Yes. However, as a training tool, there is no better distro. Period. I used it to learn digital forensics and I model all my other environments around Kali now. That being said, Parrot is a better pentesting tool in my opinion. To be perfectly honest, any distro can double as a pentesting distro. The thing about scripting tools is that they exist to make the life of a cybersecurity analyst easier. I simply don't have time to create original scripts every single time i need them. Ill write a few that are necessary for specific use cases but of they work out of the box, there's no shame in using them. If you sit in your basement and have all the time in the world to code your own apps and write your own scripts. Good for you. But it's a waste of time imo, especially if you don't need to.
