🇵🇭 Kalantas: Philippine Native Hardwood Mahogany Alternative? Growth After One Year

Ғылым және технология

Kalantas (Toona calantas) on our farm after one year of growth.
Kalantas, also known as Philippine Sandalwood or Philippine Cedar, is a very fast growing, hardwood tree that is listed as Vulnerable under DAO 2017-11.
The tree produces a red wood with a pleasant smell. It was once used to make cigar boxes. (Ahern, George P. Compilation of Notes on the Most Important Timber Tree Species of the Philippine Islands. Manila, 1901, p. 38-39.)

I have a Double Bass violin made in the Philippines out of Kalantas. It is extremely resonant and lightweight.

That sounds interesting - I didn't realize it was used for musical instruments too. I'd actually like to see that - if you look us up on Facebook and would like to, feel free to send us a photo of it - I haven't seen many finished items made of kalantas. Thank you for sharing and than you for watching our video

Thanks for this video. I also have kalantas trees planted, and they really do grow fast. I'm just not sure if it's faster than Dao or Lamio. Do you have those in your farm as well?

Thanks! That's great you have those species. We didn't plant Lamio last year, but we have some seedlings now. We did plant Dao last year - it's growing fast, but not as fast as the Kalantas yet. I think it will be interesting in 3 or 4 years to see how the growth rates change. Based on how the Dao did in the last few months, I think it is accelerating its growth now. How old are your trees?

That's great you're looking at reforestation of your land! You could look at the page Philippine Native Hardwood Tree Seedlings on facebook or there are a couple of groups where you might be able to ask for a reliable seller near your location: Philippine Native Tree Enthusiasts and Philippine Tree Farmers. Let us know how it goes!

is this tree invasive? have the same properties as mahogany?

Hello! I'm glad you're considering that impact - it's easy to hear something is native to the Philippines but not think about the more local impact it might have if it's not native to the specific area where it's being planted. Based on the following, I felt OK planting it: From what I've read, Kalantas is already found in Luzon (it's distributed throughout the country, from Batanes to Mindanao according to this: www.catalogueoflife.org/data/taxon/7CHKG). It's classified as threatened by DENR DAO-2017-11, so it's not spreading uncontrollably in nature as you would expect from an invasive/detrimental species. Usually a native species won't cause problems in the environment unless people have already caused a major disruption (I put up a video about native Eastern Red Cedar trees spreading uncontrollably in Nebraska, but that's mainly because people essentially eliminated the main natural control of those trees - the natural prairie fires in the area). It's in the same family as mahogany, so there will be some similarities, but species in the same taxonomic family will have significant differences (e.g. lions vs. house cats). Based on that, I felt OK planting it for the area we have reserved for farming and ornamentals. For our permanent reforestation area, I'm holding off on planting it unless I find there are some naturally growing nearby. Actually, for our permanent forest, right now the plan is to try to just protect it and let trees naturally regenerate as much as possible to keep it as natural as possible. If you or someone has additional information/suggestions we'd welcome it. Thanks for watching our video - we appreciate it :)
