I have owned one of these for a decade. It is a superb machine, completely trouble free despite heavy use and made in the US.

You popped up on my feed. Nice review. Retired guy and been watching Cliff Curry. I as many others who wanted to get into sharpening to sharpen tools, kitchen knives or just general sharpening have purchased the Rikon 50-161VS. After seeing this video I have to say all your points are spot on. Thank You for an excellent post. Good luck and prosper with your new found business.. This machine is a cool piece of equipment for any small shop. Thank You

What exactly did you have to do to mount the angle guide on the knife makers platen? Thanks.

  • @HonedByJones

I’ll try to make a video showing what I did. In simplistic terms the platen was too wide so I used an angle grinder to narrow it enough so the angle guide could slide on.

I wonder if you could put a 2 in drive wheel on it to run 2 by 42 belts?

    Don’t know. I’d probably just get a 2x42.

What’s the income like? I’ve loved sharpening and the feeling of using a sharp knife since I was a child. I have a great career but am considering sharpening as a side hustle

Hard question to answer. Some people are sharpening 5 hours a week and some people are sharpening 40 hours a week so I’m not sure what the average would be.

Thanks for this. What's your preferred source for good quality belts? Looks like the 1x42 is out of stock at Kalamazoo sadly

So could you sharpen edge trailing with this machine?

Steven sharpens said in his video that he ordered the machine edge trailing straight from the company.

Did you have to customize your angle guide for your Kalamazoo? If so can you do a video on how! I just purchased one, and I have a curry angle guide but it will not fit. I asked that question before you got the part of customizing the platen. Can you do a video on that? Or is there one out there one out there?

I had to customize the platen. I unfortunately didn’t make a video. 1. Measured the width I needed the platen to be to fit the angle guide. 2. Used a marker and a ruler to draw out how I needed the platen to be modified. 3. Pulled out my angle grinder with a cutoff wheel on it and cut the platen down to size. 4. Slid angle guide onto the newly modified platen.

For the volume of items you plan to sharpen with your belt grinder, what do you expect your cost of belts to amount? For your Tormek, are you using the original aluminum oxide stone?

I’m actually selling the Tormek and the 2 CBN stones. I find that the Edge Pro BevelTech and Apex do most of the same stuff that the Tormek does and I like using them more.

I’ve been using ceramic belts and trizac belts and they both last a long time and the cost is pretty low.
