Maharashtra has a higher GDP because of safe environment for people and investment. The large middle class is driving the economy and to the some extent other cities like Nashik, Aurangabad and Nagpur also generate wealth. The recent rise of IT has shifted the focus to Pune and Mumbai but the rest of the state needs to focus on its comparative advantage.

I want to supplement that in West Bengal, apart from negative politics of trade unions and resultant exodus of business from West Bengal, influx of poor population from Bihar, Jharkhand, UP, MP and Odisa besides from neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan are the reasons of low per capita GDP of West Bengal.

One solution for the farmers is to move to fruit plants where recurring expenditures not required but earning continues over years. Also farmers should go for new generation crops like kiwi, broccoli, etc. in place of paddy, wheat, etc.

Most indian land is very fertile, so leaving agriculture completely doesnt make sense. Tbf, no of people involved in Agri is quite high. Few people need to do agriculture on bigger land parcels, and rest have to be involved in Agri related businesses. Remaining one after that should work in all different streams of jobs through better education.

Sir, one way farmers can increase their income is by adding value to their produce. For example if they grow makhana then they can season that makhan with masala or dried mint package it and sell it. But bureaucracy is an issue get FSSAI license is a challenge.
