This is such a bizarre entry in the Ultra series. It stayed for a few years and then just disappeared like a weird fever dream.

Kaiju Girls is the only Ultra show that I actually wouldn’t mind airing in America. It has enough depth, mature themes, and emotional weight to match lots of quality shows here like Game of Thrones and The Wire, so I think it would fit right at home if it aired uncut and subtitled on a channel like HBO and Showtime. I also think it would be a spectacular series to bring over because I think this is the kind of series that can bring our cultures together.

It’s kinda upsetting to me personally that during Kaiju Girls’ years of existence, its mere external concept didn’t officially go beyond the Ultra franchise, since I would love to see an official Kaiju Girls take on the Godzilla kaiju

Kinda weird how Tsuburya Productions handled Kaiju girls. Obviously they needed the money and jumped on the bandwagon during the time when the Monster Girl genre was hitting it's peak, but they go back and forth on how deep they want to go into the trapping of the genre (AKA the lewd stuff). The POP manga: little to no lewd Galaxy Days manga: some lewd Kaiju Girls anime: little to no lewd Kaiju girls movie: some lewd

Now we may wait for a Kaiju Girls version of the eldritch being that is Shin Ultraman's Zetton

I like the pop manga quite a bit. The fact that their literally the monsters makes some fun situations, and the deep cuts are really interesting. Like when they visit the Ultra 7's actor's resturant.

Watched during work, this was a great one. The minor shoutout during the R/B episode is both a KG reference and also likely a reference to a Guts Girl that is used as a navigator/presenter for some events and stageshows called Minute/Minit/Minut, since the girls are using a modified version of that costume (or its literally it, hard to tell), of which her design is a bit of an offshoot of the KG one, sporting some differences to make the suit more presentable to live audiences but also overall keeping the same appearance.

Lol I can't believe something like this would actually be canon to the official series. I admit Gamora Chan looks pretty adorable and cool though haha

I'm not going to lie that I love the concept of Kaiju Girl, it's like my guilty taste, especially the Kaiju Girl Black movie (I do have shitty tastes), but I feel like they could have made something more focused slice of life to see what life would be like of the Kaijus inside the bodies of teenagers. Having taken certain personalities of the Kaijus as they did, but exploiting them to 200% and based on cringe humor like other works. Well, that's my comment and I loved the new video Sub

I actually kinda like this show, it's cute in it's own way

I think the main issue with the idea is that it's trying to focus on it being a comedy with gratuitous fanservice, but the source material and the cutaways referencing said source material are of a rather violent and action oriented series, often focusing on extremely tragic events. Yes some Ultra series have their extremely absurd aspects and are more humorous, but even established in the OG Ultraman, it's meant to be tragic when a monster is destroyed if it wasn't outright malicious. What would have worked a bit better is a slight alteration of the writing, making this setting a sort of "afterlife" where a threat is present, and the monsters perform "penance" by having their souls bonded to chosen people in this world, letting said people "Sailor Moon" into the Gijinka version of the monster in order to properly combat a threat and playing up said threat in a serious manner. Seriously, it could have done such things as building drama as to what the "new girl" can turn into and then when she is involved in the next battle you get an "Oh dang she's a Super C. O. V.!" But the overt focus on comedy and fanservice actually smother out what could have been a fairly decent action side story project.

By sheer coincidence, that's what the premise of the Pop Kaiju Girls manga is. The monsters die and get sent to the afterlife as anime girls. It's still weird and suggestive if only for the character designs, but it's debatably the best thing to come out of the whole ordeal.

Not to nitpick but wouldn't it be ASCII as in "murican standard code for information exchange", I honestly have no idea, but it's all my dumbum brain can think of whenever I see those letters together. Anyways fun video dude, the power of merchandising is truly the greatest force in the universe, well next to booba, but I guess if you combine those two you have a cash cow that can't be stopped. Thanks for all you do dude, you have been my window into the world of Tokusatsu (well asides from the westernised stuff I consumed as a kid in the 90s), have always loved Kaiju stuff but I found breaking into toku to be a daunting thing and thanks to your various retrospectives I have managed to compile myself a watchlist, made even easier with them all getting uploaded to YT. Wishing you all the best, hope the projects all go swimmingly.

@@noireel5977 Ultras are a species, though. That's, like, why they have to bond to people. They are normally a seperate entity from their host. I think one of the few outliers is Geed and Geed's version of Belial.

I found the concept of making kaijus anime girls interesting from a storytelling perspective. Giving a voice to characters that don’t typically have them has a massive amount of untapped potential. I’ve yet to see such potential go very far, if at all. Everything is always so surface level with how they are characterized, and the designs are always either “everyone has little more than bikinis” or “we’re not even going to try integrating the design so let’s just slap some monster parts on em and call it a day”. That, and they don’t try to tell a story worth engaging with unless you like the author finding every possible excuse for fanservice that they can possibly get. If the characters are portrayed accurately, then you can easily have a story that is not only interesting, but is able to be something more than jokes, quips and pantyshots. Perhaps (and by “perhaps” I mean “very likely,”)this is all just the ramblings of a madman proposing something that no one wants… who would such a thing be for?

GIRLS being the kaiju team sounds about right Considering we have names like GUTS, Super GUTS and ZAP SPACY (and the SPACY ain't even an acronym)

Fanservice is good once i chaptern a while but this leaned into it a little too much and that caused its eventual downfall. Kinda sad really, they could've made an actual good magical girl anime out of this. Maybe along the lines of the kaiju girls aren't able to control their powers when the first awaken, and instead of the ultras being there to stop their rampage, its up to the kaiju girls and the defense organisation to stop them and bring them in so that they could control their new powers and fall back into society. They could've done so much with it if they went through the traditional magical girls route and not lean too heavily on the fanservice. For me, Its a bittersweet end to this part of the franchise as i saw so much potential in it to actually be good. The Pop manga is great but ive not been able to get translation for it on the later chapters.

For me, the Ultra series ended with Ultraman Saga. Merchandise has always been a thing, but the new gen shows are forcing it extremely hard and making the merchandise part of the lore in universe.
