You know, at first Koga wanted Kagome just to be his shrapnel detector, but later you could see that he really cares about her. I think that "slap" was the reason he fell in love with her , that's why he didn't hurt her back :P

The anime is from 1997, it was pretty decent for the time. They added 3D elements in The Final Act which was super jarring.
