As they discussed, bitter melon is called "gooya" in Japanese (originally from Okinawa language). It is mostly eaten in Okinawa. Kanade cannot know gooya because she might have never been to Okinawa. Also her homeland Korea does not have subtropics lands which is suitable for gooya.

True, but it seems like the knowledge about it has spread a bit further than the places where you might find it

Pare/ Goya/ bitter melon is seriously not tasty. The more you chew, more bitter it taste. The good thing is, it's not smelly/ gag. Not recommend eating it directly. I eat them with rice and sambal

it's an acquired taste. very bitter sometimes when you want to reduce the bitternes. after you cut it in 2mm thick you washed bitter gourd/melon with salt water and it's less bitter bitter gourd is just like Hongeo-hoe in south korea. either you love it very much or hate it very much 😂

Yeah for anyone who like to troll Kaela in her stream just Spam "Pare" (that indonesian word for bitter melon.yes it's super bitter and leave a mix of bitter and little bit spicy aftertaste if you ate it raw. It can be made into healthy juice though). Yeah ask her which way she like the bitter melon when she eat it,i bet raw with steaming rice and sambal 😂.

I used to hate the taste of bitter gourd. but I somehow acquired a taste for it later. and because of shokugeki no soma, I somehow understand that having bitter food with other would enhance the other dishes' flavor

I know bitter stuff can help with flavor.. Like drinking a cold bitter beer after eating fried or spicy food can cleanse the palette and ready your taste buds for more food... But Ela actually likes to eat just the Bitter Melon as is... Which is kinda insane. But I can understand how people end up liking food that they hated before.. I hated prune juice, during workmen's college that was the only thing to drink besides decaffeinated mud coffee, always sour warm powder milk, and water. And I hated the taste.. But it after 6 months of drinking it I actually started liking it. and had it with almost every meal in the canteen. I came home a couple years later and was buying Prune-Grape juice for a while before (tasted even better then just prune juice.) and I stopped drinking it after a couple years.. I just bought some a couple months ago and tried it. It was so gross. Hahaha! Granted it'd been like 7 or 8 years since I last tried it, but still it was so gross I couldn't believe I actually liked this stuff.
