ABOUT KAAL BHAIRAV
Kaal Bhairav is a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva, who is known as 'the destroyer' in the Hindu Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Depicted with a fearsome appearance and adorned with garlands of skulls, and holding a trident, he is the symbol of the moving aspect of time and the impermanence of life. Bhairav originates from the word bhīru, which means "fearsome". Bhairav means "terribly fearsome form".
Kaal Bhairav is also known as the Kotwal of Kashi (Varanasi/Banaras). The title ‘Kotwal of Kashi’ was given to Kaal Bhairav for his role of being the police of the city. A ‘Kotwal’ in English is a police officer, responsible for overlooking the protection and dispensing justice. So, just like a police officer, Baba Kaal Bhairav maintains the law and order in the city and watches over Varanasi, making sure that everyone in the city is safe, protected and justice is served. It is also said that Baba Kaal Bhairav makes sure that no evil forces enter Kashi and the purity of the holy city is maintained.
