The K2 Black Panther (Hangul: K2 '흑표'; Hanja: K2 '黒豹') is a South Korean main battle tank that replaces most of the M48 Patton tanks and complement the K1 and K1A1 series of main battle tanks currently fielded by the Republic of South Korea. Mass production commenced in 2013 and the first K2 tanks were deployed with the armed forces in June 2014.
In 1995, the South Korean Agency for Defense Development (Hangul: 국방과학연구소) was given the task of developing a modern armored fighting vehicle based upon Korean state-of-the-art domestic technologies. It was intended for this development program to further modernize the Republic of Korea Army, despite the superior capability of existing K1 and K1A1 designs versus existing North Korean tanks, most of which are aging T-55s and Type 59s. Emphasis upon indigenous technologies would also allow the proposed vehicle to enter the export market without licensing difficulties.
Early design variants included a version with an unmanned turret, which was later scrapped in favor of manned turret designs. It was also planned for the vehicle to be equipped with Rheinmetall's experimental 140 mm smoothbore gun, though this had to be abandoned when Rheinmetall ceased development upon the rationale that its current weapon, the 120 mm/L55 would be more than adequate to counter prospective armored threats for the foreseeable future. The K2 was subsequently reconfigured for the 120 mm/L55, though it is capable of mounting the 140 mm gun with minimum modifications should the need arise.
The design became production-ready in 2006, following 11 years in development and a research budget expenditure of approximately US$230 million, and entered the production phase on March 2, 2007 in Changwon, South Korea. It was planned that the K2 would feature a domestically-designed powerpack, based upon the German-designed MTU-890, comprising a Doosan Infracore Corporation 1,500 horsepower (1,100 kW) 12-cylinder diesel engine and a S&T Dynamics transmission. However, this encountered recurrent technical trouble in testing, leading to a delay in operational deployment of the K2 for 2 years.
In March 2011, South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) announced that mass production of the K2, which the Army was expecting to deploy in 2012, would not happen due to problems concerning its engine and transmission. In April 2012, DAPA announced that due to ongoing issues with the reliability and durability of the domestically-produced powerpack, the first 100 production K2s would use German-made MTU powerpack and that service entry would be delayed until March 2014.
When compared to the K1A1 tank, the K2's main gun reloads quicker and reaches targets faster. Although both are 120 mm, the K2's barrel is 1.3 m (4.3 ft) longer (6.6 m (22 ft) total length), resulting in a higher muzzle velocity of 1,400 m/s (4,600 ft/s) (compared to 1,140 m/s (3,700 ft/s) for the K1A1) for greater accuracy and armor penetration. Other features include the tank's ability to cross a 4 m (13 ft)-deep river, a posture control function that can lower its height by 40 cm (16 in), and a laser warning system that turns the turret towards the source of hostile fire almost instantaneously.
The first 15 K2 Black Panther tanks were put into service in June 2014. Faulty indigenous engines and transmissions previously halted production, but the lowering of required acceleration performance allowed it to enter service. The "power pack" of tank is intended to be locally developed. Until that occurs, they will employ German-made MTU power plants, making possible the deployment of around 100 K2s by 2017. Tanks under the second contract, after the first 100 models, will be built with the domestic Doosan DST 1,500 hp engine and S&T Dynamics automatic transmission, beginning delivery in late 2016.
Hope you enjoy!

    The area around Seoul and the DMZ consists of very sharp hills and narrow valleys and the hydraulic suspension system to aid gun depression and elevation is an innovative approach catering for a topology that is not particularly tank friendly. The K2 represents a massive deterrence to North Korean aggression as its ability to hold ground defensively is matched by its ability to take ground when employed offensively should it be employed in counter attack. Given that South Korea has excellent engineering skills the K2 is probably a match for the world's best tanks.

    I agree and disagree there.....A lot depends on situation,location and type of training and experience.....The British and American MBT not only have high end spec's but they they have battle tested crews in real world situations....An Abrams crew would probably have no problem against the panther,that being said,The US and South Korea are Constantly working and Training together in case NK or China get their panties in a wad and try to move south.

    My father drove a Centurion during the Korean war in 1952. He always said that Korea is not tank terrain and that tanks were MOSTLY used as artillery - this even with what is considered one of the best battle tanks in history and an excellent hill climber. Therefore, the hydraulic suspension system in the K2 must be an advantage in those particular circumstances. However, as far as the assertion that the K2 "is probably a match for the world's best tanks" is concerned, I'd say that's a bit of a stretch anywhere outside Korea itself.

    As an American, I lived and worked in South Korea as a tech spook. The K2 is an excellent 4th Gen Tank platform and will stand up well to the NK 2nd and 3rd Gen Tanks. Simply put, NK has no chance of ever winning a war with South Korea.

    Considering that S.Korean army had no tanks during the initial phase of Korean War (well... they had M8 Greyhound and also received a number of M36 Jackson several months into the war) which is still less than 70 years ago, the fact that S.Korea now has world-class MBT is quite an accomplishment.

    My personal preference is t-14 and entire armata platform. That being said I have nothing against merkava or k2, as a matter of fact I think there's a fundamental similarity between merkava, k2, and t14, that being stepping out of mold and becoming it's own, and that due to obvious reasons. For example, merkava's defense preference against traditional anti tank elements, south Korean smart shells because sk knows for a fact due to geography and urban layout, prolonged warfare especially tank related would become (very very ironically) trank-trench warfare. And I think merkava for it's purposes and k2 for it's , both are very well adjusted however that's what makes these two bit predictable and kind one trick pony, what I mean is if faced with a non traditional enemy, say Israel with Italy or turkey (especially since turkey does have k2) and Korea faced with Chinese tanks or Japanese tanks, in my opinion, just marginally fall short of parity, no they will never be completely useless just because they are not fighting traditional enemy, and with their specific improvement over traditional western tanks they will also have in certain areas superiority, however over all, they, in my opinion would fall short against western tanks just marginally also if non traditional enemies are able to circumvent either of the tanks' party tricks it'll loose it's one advantage. Now t-14 also walks similar line, out of the box thinking, designed to be superior rather than be at par, but the way it's marketed (or shown to be designed) is something lot more universal, t-14 is not just a tank it's part of armata platform, it's not only tundra specialist it's at home in all conditions, it also tries to address 3 of traditional issue of tank warfare, human error, physical size, atgm or equivalent elements. Automation, active defense system and reducing size and height of the turret. If all that it's supposed to be is true it truly is future of tank warfare, not only it is a formidable weapons platform in Eurasian theater it's at home in most conditions. My rebuttal to it's supremacy is in two halves, one is it not being actually capable of synchronizing all of its features effectively say it's anti-atgm not being effective, it's software being not that good etc, secondly even if it's that good, a professional grade electro-magnetic or otherwise targeted attack can potentially take out entire vehicle without much possibility of semi function or salvage or war time repair not that it's necessary that all successful hits are guaranteed to take it out completely but one can't help and wonder what's the probability of tank being completely being non functional in case of successful hit from traditional or non traditional weapons fielded especially by professional armies. So all in all I think k2 and merkava are great pieces of military hardware and I personally love the look of merkava's turret as opposed to super vanilla look of t-14, going into future I think t-14 has a advantage. Tc have a nice day.

    Ahh yes, the K2. I do really feel that it is somewhat of a mixture of Russian an well western MBT design, atleast somewhat, because the Koreans own some T-80Us and they also worked (and they still do work) with russian tank designers. I like its suspension and gun, and the Reactive armour seems potent to me, but it is damn expensive, but it also minimizes the foreigns parts that are used so it is justified. In my opinion this tank doesn´t really have big downsides but that comes to a cost, but it ensures the complete dominance of South Korean Tanks when they fight the North Koreans. Even the Popkun-Ho s don´t seem to be a threat at reasonable distances... And before i forget it, very nice channel, really didn´t like the Autoloader video which kinda biased me towoards the channel (well i am also biased when it comes to autoloaders), but really awesone work and keep it up comrade ;)

    If the K2 was designed to mount the cancelled 140mm reinmetal gun then I'm assuming it can use the newly designed 130mm L51 gun? It's got 50% higher muzzle energy than the 120mm L55. If the K2 had that gun it would be impossible to deny it the number one spot on any list, if you like lists.

  • @AllThingsCubey

    If they're experimenting with ETC guns then they might skip on the 130mm. A 120mm ETC gun can match a 130mm on muzzle energy and range, without the extra weight and heavier ammo.

    NATO will most likely move to 140mm canons for their next generation tanks, like the Panzer3 and whatever replaces the Abrams. It's not cancelled, on hold for now. Maybe the T-14 will give them a scare. Note the K2 is specifically designed to be retrofitted with the 140mm - they know its coming.

  • @AllThingsCubey

    @AllThingsCubey

    7 жыл бұрын

    It's not so super, the ammo is fucking heavy and we don't have the turret architecture for an autoloader yet, in the Leopard 2 and Abrams that is. Now like I said Reinmetal have a new 130mm L51 gun. It's designed for an autoloader, and the Leopard 2 turret, with modifications. I'd expect to see it in use mid 2020s. However, ETC guns give much more pressure and power from smaller calibres (120mm) so there's also that. If Korea adopts either a 120mm ETC gun, or the new German 130mm, then the K2 will be superior to the Armata, even if it gets a stupidly large 152mm.

  • @AllThingsCubey

    @AllThingsCubey

    19AVM86 X86 That doesn't make grammatical sense. Do you mean anything under 130-140mm is undergunned? or that 130-140mm is undergunned compared to the 152mm of the Armata? I'd say 130mm is as big as it's going to get with ETC technology possible.

  • @AllThingsCubey

    @AllThingsCubey

    7 жыл бұрын

    The 130mm needs only turret modifications, it's designed to be mounted on any 120mm L55 capable turret ring. It may however need an auto loader. The 140mm is cancelled. Meanwhile Germany and France are working on a new 4th gen MBT currently named "main ground combat system" but everyone is just calling it Leopard 3. This is not the Leopard 2A7V or A8, those are upgrades of upgrades of upgrades on an old chassis. This is going to be a brand new chassis incorporating all possible new technology, and very likely a 130mm gun.

    BOSSA TRON wtf are you smoking s.korea is our allies we would never attack them but let me just say s.korea has zero a..10s and zero effective air power if they we're to take on usa 😅😂

    Obviously the U.S. wouldn't attack S. Korea, although I was expecting to read some anti-US comments since that's par for the course from ignorant youtubers. To say S. Korea has zero effective air power isn't true though. They have very capable aircraft and well trained pilots :)

    I can't decide if I like this more than the Type 10. What are people's thoughts on unmanned turrets? Why didn't they go with the unmanned turret?

    I got to say that I like the K2 Black Panther, as it is a further development of the K1 tanks which themselves are heavily based off the American M1 Abrams series.

    Nice video Matsimus! Come to AW next year when the game hits full release, they do have in-game modeling for both K1 and K2 tanks.. they are expected to be added in 4th Dealer tree line along with Israel Vehicle tree. Im gonna leave some few fun facts might interested you for your small enjoyment. Fun Fact: South Korea Military could have been among those countries that operating Leopard 1 tanks due to Nixon Doctrine's introduction and left S.Korea bit vulnerable to N.Korean threat (this was during mid to late 70s when N.Korea had way more production capability than S.Korea) it was very close deal with Germans but U.S offered better deal... ROKIT Program, they took the offer and you know the results. Fun Fact 2: At the early developmental stage of K2 tank, ADD had originally thought about unmanned turret with adaptation of Russian style of Kerosel Autoloader mechanism. They actually made prototype version of this new autoloader and it had whole single round loading mechanism without separating round and propellant charge like Russians have. The plan quickly scrapped due to expected rising of production cost, bigger inner compartment space thus increasing the size of the tank than they wanted and questionable functional reliability of new autoloader itself. Instead they went for safer route, importing from France. Yes.. K2 Black Panther could have been Korean version of T-14 Armata. Fun Fact 3: K2 is only going to produced less than 300, since K2s are intended to bridge gap between older K1 tanks and new XK3. They are kind of filling the blanks purposed ones. Though details of XK3 is not revealed or rumored other than possibility of having unmanned turret. These are the ones that I only think of... and again great Vid blog!

    I'd heard of this tank but like you knew almost nothing about it. The K-1 Rokit was a cut -down M1 (a lot of American input) and I knew more about that. I can't think of a single aspect of this tank which is not absolutely first rate. Man, it's got everything! The latest Japanese tank has "kneeling" hydraulic suspension, for example, but this goes even further with forward terrain reading. Jesus. Active engagement of ATMs? Well the list goes on and on doesn't it, you should know you did the video. Can't believe it. But it's the Western World's newest tank if it just came in in 2013 so...Solved a mystery for me though, I've heard about this new Turkish "super tank", and was puzzled. Now I know where it comes from.

    Edward Kim and even THAT had problems. the BIGGEST hurdle in making a modern tank from scratch is the powerpack. only the leading EU countries russia the us japan china and now korea can make em.

    looks like a good machine 👍 Hey Matsimus, I'm not saying you should stop, and I understand your motives to continue doing so, but you really don't have to be so ambiguous with your opinions. You're a tanker so your commentary about tanks is, at the very least, consonant and acceptable. I value your personal input on these vids because I know very little about the world of armor, and as a veteran myself it's a subject I've always been interested in. As for stupid folks and trolls in the comment section... well that's why I understand your very light touch on the matter. In any case, keep the knowledge and footage rolling 👍👍
