K-pop cheerleaders: the 'flowers' of South Korean baseball | AFP

In baseball-mad South Korea teams of professional cheerleaders pumping up players and fans with elaborate K-pop routines are as integral to the games as beer and fried chicken. Imported by American missionaries more than 100 years ago, baseball is South Korea's most cherished spectator sport, beating out even football. There are no cheerleaders in Major League Baseball in the United States, but they are central to the spectacle in South Korea as they relentlessly dance, cheer and lead the fan chanting throughout entire games.

there are different kinds of cheer. korea also has cheerleaders who do stunts (when you see them lift the girls in the air and do flips and such) and ones who just do cheerleading dance. then you obviously have these cheerleaders who do k-pop dances

I went to Japan to watch a baseball game and the team cheerleaders never stopped making musical noise. They were employees of the team and they kept beating their drum and blowing their horn. It was so distracting and ruined the game. I left because I couldn't stand it. I asked my Japanese friend why he always watched baseball in America, but never went to a baseball game in Japan. He said that he also couldn't stand the constant noise of the drums and horn at Japanese games. In America, we actually LIKE BASEBALL and want to WATCH BASEBALL. We don't want to listen to a musical concert while trying to watch baseball. And look at the stands in this Korean game - the stadium is almost empty. I bet most baseball fans stay home because the cheerleading is annoying after a while.
