Comparing this to “High Enough” and some other of her songs, you can just feel how much she has grown. I love K.Flay for a bunch of reasons (her songs sound good, the emotions she talks about feel REAL and POWERFUL, she seems really friendly and just looks cool lol) In High Enough K.Flay has a really different relationship with Love (or something approximate, something love adjacent). Anyway - she’s with someone and feels good with them. This is a huge theme in her songs, all the way back to 2012 even, nearly a decade ago: “I can’t find nothin wrong with feeling like I don’t belong, anywhere but here”. She feels good when she’s with someone she loves. She doesn’t need drugs when she’s that euphoric. But then, now… post breakup, she takes pills, (I like to think of them like antidepressants but i also love K.Flay because she makes it so easy for me to project my feelings onto her music so apologies to the real human being behind this song if this is hurtful to read), and she cries glitter. This is a huge similarity but also a huge contrast to the milky substance that replaced her blood in the music video for Blood in the Cut. This milky substance was SO much. It was her untapped greatness, it was gasoline, and releasing it was a violently euphoric ritual. But back to Nothing can Kill Us, and its pills. Like Blood in the Cut, this extra-bodily influence changes her. It changes her body, maybe even her blood. Definitely at least her tears. It changes who she is and how she experiences the world. It makes her euphoric, too, but in a scene that is much more definitely a dream. The type of fantasy that this music video depicts is a lot more honest about her state of being. This video cuts in and out and in. The other video escalated until she ascends off of the Earth. It used to drive her, the blood used to be gasoline, and bloodletting made her float. But in this music video, the pills are her desperately holding on to a lost love. It keeps her on the ground, knowing the beauty of what exists on this planet. There is no desire to flee anymore. She has tasted happiness and love and everything great. Listen to Sister and DNA for proclamations of how she feels. Alternatively, listen to High Enough. It’s incredibly related to the two songs we’ve already been talking about (NCKU and BitC) But anyway - the breakup. The yearning and desire is a sharp contrast to the song’s name. Nothing can kill us turns from a collective “us” to a singular “us”. From a proclamation to acceptance. From “nothing can kill Us” to “Nothing can kill us (individually… but maybe Us is dead)” Or perhaps the song title a proclamation that K.Flay is holding out hope for a reunion. “(We’re going through a rough patch but) nothing can kill us”. Either way, the bottle of pills - K.Flay pretending that the relationship isn’t over - is empty at the end of the video. Seeking closure but knowing that holding on is a temporary measure at best. Continuing with this fantastic and fantastical narrative, we reach the final scene. In it she’s got what looks like a hangover, she looks tired. And in what may or may not be a callback to BitC, her magical body fluid is leaking again. But instead of gasoline - combustible, dynamic, powerful, driving, this time it is glitter - pretty, inert, and honest. Not euphoric, not deadly, just … I don’t know. It is what it is. She is she and this is who she is. The difference from BitC to NCKU is both big and small. It’s certainly the same woman, but she has grown a ton in the intervening years. She has learned to love and be loved, and she will never be the same. This time, K.Flay is grounded in the real world. She may still have unhealthy coping mechanisms, but… she’s outta pills at the end. Which path will she take moving forward? She can do anything that she wants, and all I can do is send her love and root for her from the absolute top to bottom of my soul.

This is one of the best comments I have ever read. It perfectly encapsulates the wonder that is Kristine and her art. Watching her grow over the last decade, from "We Hate Everyone" to "Blood In The Cut" to "Nothing Can Kill Us" has been a journey. I've been able to grow with her, emotionally, mentally, and physically, for me at least. Started listening to her at 10 years old, and I turn 21 in January. I've been able to grow with her and it has been quite the experience. She's one of my favourite people in the world, and your comment has put into words why, in a way that I never could. Thank you for this comment, Ari. It's incredible 💖

I just had to come back to this and read it all over again. Have you ever thought about making video essays? Because you definitely have the talent for it! I'd love to hear more of your dissections about other songs and artists. And I have to say this again, this is the best comment on KZread I have ever read. Which says a LOT considering I've been on this platform for 15 years now. I've probably read thousands of comments, and not a single one of them can compare to this. It's perfection.
