Great to hear one of the games best pitchers of all time dive deep into the 'epidemic' of arm injuries.

Verlander hit the nail on the head. Both with the factors that have caused the current situation, but also a path towards beginning to find a solution to it.

Man this is a thing of beauty,JV much respect on great insite into the state of pitching. And I doubt you could get a better pitcher to give that insight from. Here's a future HOF'er who's had great success with old school pitching philosophies as well as success in today's throw & spin as hard as you can mindset, hard to disagree with a pitcher who has that type of resume on the subject!

The ability to throw strikes has been lost to the ability to throw hard..Too many weights being lifted and the shoulders and elbows are getting overworked over the years. These youngsters are looking to throw harder instead of becoming a pitcher that can locate spots..Speed,Speed,Speed!! Slow dowon people, everyone is a rush to go to get someplace way down to e road instead of focusing on the what’s in front of you..

Pitchers are actually throwing significantly more strikes now when compared to before the velocity boom. But there is definitely a chance that weight lifting at a young age can increase likelihood of an injury

I told my son that good mechabics that work with your natural motions, accuracy and learning to vary velocity will dominate til high school... and maybe about 16 you build endurance then bump strength up gradually. minimal funky sh*t til ypunare older😂

In all seriousness, my personal point of view is to refrain from entering children from middle school-high school age in weighted ball programs, for the simple fact that their elbow joints are not closed at that age yet. Now, in regards to implementing plyo balls, shoulder tubes, Crossover Symmetry, J-Bands, med balls, Core Velocity belts, and MarcPro, recovery, etc into your routine as a pitcher, I think these options are more conducive to promoting long-term success and health, while also helping add velocity. On another note, analytics have definitely improved the game’s performance all around. Pitchers and hitters now use the best technology ever known to the sport to better hone their crafts and develop some amazing talent. Nowadays, there aren’t the guys who are rarities and compete at high levels; it’s all over the game. Guys nowadays are competing at a much higher level across the board, which is good for baseball. The days of having a few truly star players in the league are long gone. There are guys that are among the best in the game who don’t get voted to play in the All-Star game because the competition is just that much better.

Agree with everything. Not so much pitch clock. Without one gane is a drag

I have the unpopular opinion. I played at the college level, baseball was my life. With the pitch clock, changes to make offense more explosive, mound visit limits, rules preventing contact such as blocking the plate, normalization of "pimping it" and unnecessary celebration...I've just stopped watching the game. MLB is trying to squeeze eggs out of the golden goose and honestly it's no longer the game I fell in love with. Most folks feel differently--I just don't understand why a game needs to be 2.5 hours instead of 3.5 or 4, and why we need more, more, more home runs and 100mph pitches. I feel like anyone that appreciated the anticipation of a play in small ball is long gone.

He alludes to the different ball, starting around 2016. See? MLB's infatuation with home runs may have partially caused this. With everyone now capable of hitting for power, pitchers look for strikeouts more than weak contact. It's time to un-juice the baseball.

The pitch clock is irrelevant to arm injuries. The problem is max effort the pitchers use today. Pitching is like real estate, Location, location, location. If you throw the ball over the plate, no matter how hard it’s thrown, it’s gonna get hit. Nolan Ryan threw 95-98 mph for 27 yrs with no arm injuries. He had the capability to throw 105 mph but only used maximum effort when necessary. Contrarily, Greg Maddux never threw a pitch over 85 mph, he lived on locating his pitches. Pitchers need to pitch not throw.

@AndrewCalhounsongs I never said he wasn’t capable of throwing in the 90’s. He was 8-18 his first 2yrs. in the bigs throwing hard. Then he figured out it wasn’t about velocity, but vicinity that was the key to success.

Expand the roster!! Add 6 more players to the roster for a total of 32 players and add them to the pitching staff. Much more rest between starts and relief appearances.

Yea that brings back memories,or should I say nightmares- lol, of unlimited September rosters........that was awful, with so many pitching changes. It wouldn't be quite as bad with the 3 batter minimum rule, but would still lead to more pitching changes😢
