About Justin Townes Earle:
In some respects, Justin Townes Earle seemed destined from birth to be a musician -- his father, Steve Earle, is one of America's most acclaimed singer/songwriters, and he was named in part for Townes Van Zandt, a close friend to Earle and an equally legendary tunesmith. But Justin also grew up learning the downside of the musician's life, and came up against some of the same demons that haunted his father. Born in 1982, Justin Townes Earle didn't see much of his dad through most of his childhood; after the release of his first album in 1986, Steve was often on the road, and a serious drug habit sidelined him through much of the early '90s. Despite it all, Justin developed an appetite for music, and in his teens began playing and singing with two different Nashville groups, a rock band called the Distributors and a bluegrass-influenced acoustic combo, the Swindlers.
Once clean and sober he began putting a new focus on his music and songwriting. In 2007, Justin unveiled a critically acclaimed EP, Yuma, on his own J-Trane Music label, and later that year he signed with the respected "insurgent country" label Bloodshot, which released his debut album, The Good Life, on March 25, 2008. He followed it with Midnight at the Movies in 2009 and Harlem River Blues in 2010.
While touring in support of Harlem River Blues, Earle was involved in an altercation with a club owner after a show in Indianapolis, IN, which led to a brief stay in jail and a return to rehab for alcohol issues. Since then, Earle has reportedly been clean and sober, and continued to record and tour steadily. In 2012, Earle released the album Nothing's Gonna Change The Way You Feel About Me Now, and dipped his toes into production, working behind the board on Unfinished Business, an album by pioneering rockabilly singer Wanda Jackson. After Earle's contract with Bloodshot had run its course, he signed a deal with Communion Records, a UK label owned in part by Ben Lovett of Mumford & Sons, but the deal soon turned into a war of words between Earle and the label's A&R staff, with Earle frequently posting angry messages on Twitter about his dealing with the company. In 2014, Earle finally re-emerged with a new album, Single Mothers, which was released by the American independent label Vagrant Records. Single Mothers was recorded in tandem with a companion album, Absent Fathers, but rather than release them together, Earle decided the two sets of songs would be more powerful as separate works, and Absent Fathers arrived in Januray 2015. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Lyrics:
I am my father's son
I've never known when to shut up
I ain't fooling no one
I am my father's son
We don't see eye to eye
And I'll be the first to admit I've never tried
It sure hurts me, it should hurt sometime
We don't see eye to eye
I was a young man when
I first found the pleasure in the feel of a sin
And I went down the same road as my old man
Yeah, I was younger then
Now it's 3 a.m. and I'm standing in the kitchen
Holding my last cigarette
Strike a match and I see my reflection in the mirror in the hall
And I say to myself

Before he left this world, he changed my musical tastes forever. What a songwriting legend....
This breaks my heart. Had the pleasure of meeting JUSTIN TOWNES EARLE after he did a concert in Florida about three years ago after the show. He was followed into my favorite tavern by about twenty fans seeking autographs. He very kindly and patiently signed them all and then sidled up to the bar by my side to order a drink. I asked him what he did to earn that kind of attention and he all too modestly replied: "Oh, just sing some songs is all." OMG. What an understatement that was. I bought him a drink and we had a smoke while we drank and talked for nearly an hour and he was so interesting and down-to-earth. It was an honor getting to spend some time with such an immensely talented young man. Sometimes lying right on the cusp of greatness is the darkest abyss. RIP JTE.

Yup him and Steve had a weird relationship for a while there. We are like 4th cousins but Justin and I are the same age so we hung out the few times he would come back to Earles chapel for reunions . Im going to his birthday celebration in Nashville in January. It's weird I didn't know how good at writing he was. Such a sad deal. He is named after Townes van Zandt and Steve Earles son .
I hate 2020. You’ll be missed, sir. 💔😔

The very face of addiction singing a song of truth and pain and glory. Love this man so much.
"I was a young man when I first found the pleasure in the feel of a sin" - beautiful/sad line - beautiful/sad song - I'm very pleased to have found this young singer through his father - but definitely his own man.

I think thats one of the best lyrics I've ever heard. This song hits me hard. He is my cousin same age and we had the same demons. I'm driving to Nashville in the morning for his 40th birthday tribute show.
What a beautiful song. This man was an exceptional songwriter and performer. We lost one of the very great ones. His music won’t be forgotten.
A songwriting legend, this is true. My son hurts like this. Except he has his dads long thin frame and his fathers brown eyes but his heart is in the, right from wrong and "I know to do better", which sadly my sons' father said of his father.
I've never been so upset at an artists passing. I related a lot to your music, going though rollercoaster of addiction RIP sir. Your were a true musician.

There’s always so much finesse in his playing. Really a legend.
About as beautiful as the word was intended to mean. JTE rest easy hombre.
I had the pleasure of seeing Justin several times in Portland OR. From the first time I heard him play “halfway to Jackson” I was hooked. He had a major impact on my taste in music and the way I play guitar. He’s gone too early. I pray he finds peace in the arms of the savior.
Been listening to JTE since 2009 and I’m not stopping now. Rest easy.
This is the most beautiful he ever sang it Can't stop listening. ❤️RIP Beautiful Soul.
God Bless the Earle Family! I have listened to Steve my whole life, this is the first song ive heard of his son, very sad for their loss. This was one heck of a song to say the least!
This is one of the greatest songs ever written. WOW.
This guys done more than he knows just “simply” writing beautiful music
And there he stood. Six foot Five, thin and covered in tattoos, swaying from side to side. Wearing a vintage suit and Buddy Holly's glasses. Beating that parlor guitar up, heaving his breath as he sneered every word, singing something about the Harlem River Blues. He was so much like a preacher, and so fucking cool. And he's a better writer than his father. You know, you forget he's his daddy's son when he sings about having his Mama's eyes. Love you, JT
Thank you Mr. Vincent Neil Emerson for introducing this beautiful music to me 👍
What a beautiful voice, yes I’m hearing for the first time. R.I.P. dear man🌹
I can hear you breathe. I listen - Captivated by the sound in my ears of your voice; Raw and beautiful. With breaths soft and sweet, Like parma violets on the tongue. Breath you catch between lyrics that echo pain; And tells a story of a troubled soul - now at peace. EK❤️

World is that little bit dimmer than it was a day ago. A spark of vibrance was extinguished.
Oh hearts are broken by the news you are no longer standing with us..You did leave a pieces of yourself through your music!!! You were so damn talented, kind, handsome and a little lost. Those that fight the demons know how much it takes from you and every time you just don’t given in you lose a little more strength. You will be sooooo missed hearing your beautiful voice and seeing your gorgeous eyes I hope your at peace and now you can rest... Love ya Justin

The really sad thing is, we are left with the music he has already done and will never get to hear what was yet to come. RIP Justin.
Justin: Thank you. I’m thankful to have seen you live three times. The last show, it was just you and a guitar. You were hurting, but man you were amazing that night. I’ll see you down the road, JTE.

So very saddened by the news of a great talent , taken way too young. My condolences to the family 💔🙏
Came to Justin’s music via his old man, who I got to from Guy Clark and TVZ. Man, what a beautiful soul, and what a loss. I spent 15-25 wild and battled addiction, still do. His music gets to me deep down, and his songs and words are extraordinary. Justin belongs in the canon of great American songwriters with Guy, Townes and the best. RIP you beautiful man.
