Justice Jawad Hassan’s expertise covers a vast domain of civil and commercial laws. He has not only practiced extensively, as a leading transactional and litigating lawyer in commercial, company, tax, oil and gas, power, banking, arbitration matters but also has drafted laws for Provincial and Federal Governments and in addition thereto has served and also is serving on the Boards, Syndicates and Institutions. His domestic expertise propelled him to the international forums of the International Chambers of Commerce (ICC), London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) and Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) where he has been working alongside English Barristers and Law Firms in international arbitrations representing in the cases before the courts of England and Singapore.
Hassan was elevated as Judge of Lahore High Court in November 2016, by which time, he had more than 150 reported judgments at his credit. On becoming a Judge, he quickly rose up the ranks by dint of his work and by implementing a practice of giving judgments in the open court. To-date (2021), being on Bench, more than 300 reported judgments for having developed principles of law and legal doctrines in numerous high-profile cases. In 2019, he was nominated by then Hon’ble Chief Justice to assist in addressing legal grievances of overseas Pakistanis who were suffering due to delays and backlogs of their cases in courts and delivered speeches to overseas Pakistani in UK, UAE and Pakistan. J. Hassan was instrumental in the setting up of dedicated Courts for Overseas Pakistanis as well as the historic initiative taken by the Lahore High Court to establish the first-ever Commercial Courts in Pakistan. He set in place a training program for judges of Commercial Courts which was organized and conducted by the Punjab Judicial Academy in collaboration with the World Bank.
Hassan has written chapters, edited and compiled a number of books on law published within and outside Pakistan and also has international publications and research articles in law journals on his credit. He continues to write and contribute to the books and journals even after his elevation. He has raised the bar of law practice and legal education in Pakistan through his prolific lectures since 1996 at institutions in Pakistan such as the Federal Judicial Academy of Pakistan, the Punjab Judicial Academy, Punjab University Law School, National Institute of Public Administration, LUMS, and Kinnaird College.Since 1996, J. Hassan has also delivered speeches at international judicial conferences in USA (1996), Belgium (1996), Singapore (1997) UK (1999), Netherlands (2001), Vietnam (2004), and the Supreme Court of Pakistan (2012), China (2017 & 2018), on the invitation of Chief Justice of Supreme People’s Court China, where he trained civil judges and government officers in Beijing on environmental law; Myanmar (2018), South Africa (2019), UAE (2019), and multiple addresses at the UK House of Lords and House of Commons (2019), to name a few. In 2004-2005, he trained civil judges, magistrates throughout Pakistan alongwith late Hon’ble Justice Saleem Akhtar (late), Supreme Court of Pakistan.
