This is literally me RIGHT NOW. I have a different app for every single productivity task I do and I'm at the point where I'm thinking about just using all native apple products for everything (notes and reminders). The problem isn't the apps, it's ME.

This reminds me of how I came to rely on using Apple Calendar. I tried everything, the bullet journal, paper and pen, online planners, paper planners, nothing worked well. But the Calendar app works anytime, every time. And it’s synced across all my Apple devices. The time blocks are colorful, and I can see at a glance which days in a month have stuff to do. And I can set recurring events with ease. Just use what’s best for your workflow

Was a Notability/NOTION/GoodNotes junkie. Went back to the basics with Apple Notes (and calendar). The joy of having all my info carry across my iPhone, iPad, macbook pro and mac mini was worth it. Never have to worry about not having all my info on ALL my devices. Been a Mac user for 40 years almost and still learning new things. Great video. Thank you.

I have this many devices also, are we spoilt?(!) Drawing the line at Watch though, no matter how brilliant it is. And I'm doing my best to not replace a 7yo ipad, but potentially will, purely for the pencil functionality as I think it will be useful for my science lectures. And I may also try Kindle Oasis to improve reading productivity, although these days I think it's fine to 'be wasteful' and print it - a carbon pawprint each time, compared to a full footprint and another thing I have to charge.

But also Trello, and GTD inside of Dropbox Paper. And just started Google Keep, since one work phone is Android. I also use two different types/styles of physical notebooks. Nice video. Totally agree. For me, switching apps was also a form of procrastination. Setting up new apps feels like taking action, when really, I'm just delaying getting things done. Better to just stick to one thing and get it together. Another benefit of Apple Notes is longevity. One thing about all these new apps is you have no idea when things will no longer be supported. The risk of Apple going defunct before all these new apps is close to zero, so I don't have to worry about my data potentially being lost. Which is why I just use native Apple apps for everything. One thing I wish Apple would do though, is integrate Reminders into the Calendar app, the way Google Cal has to do's at the top of each day. Strange that they haven't added that yet.

you can actually link your reminders to the calendar and vice-versa! i just found out about it yesterday . all you have to do is open a task from your reminders and just drag it into the calender app in a scheduled time of a day. and the opposite you just drag a task from the calender and drag it to one of the reminders.there's also a way to link apple notes to calender but idk much about it yet.

Very much common sense and back to basics. I have been flabbergasted by the incredible volume of blogs, podcasts, and KZread videos that try to tell us that we need to switch to yet another app to get our notes right and our productivity up. I wonder how many people spend most of their time just trying out new apps (of which we don't know will they exist a year from now), and switching to and fro between apps: "Why I switched from X to Y", "Why I went back from Y to X", etc. The native Apple apps have been developing in the right direction for years now and have functionality that advanced subscription-based apps lack. Rather than switching to another app because the Apple native app lacks something, it is probably much wiser to just wait for Apple to upgrade (and perhaps give them a hint about what you expect their apps to do next). I am a visual person, and the thing that holds me back from using Apple Notes as my one and only note-taking app is the default font which is very hard to read. As a user, I cannot change the default. I can only change the font once I have written the note. That's why I still have one (basically free) other note-taking app besides Apple Notes. Another point: I wonder why you use Apple Notes for task management. Apple has Reminders, which is an advanced reminder and task management that competes well with Todoist, Things 3, and many other premium todo apps. My experience is that the combination of four native Apple apps: Calendar, Contacts, Notes, and Reminders, makes for an invincible team, particulary since they work together so well. It actually makes me wonder why people spend so much time trying out other paid apps and migrating data many times over, when it would be so much more productive to just fine-tune the combination of native apps that Apple offers. A big thank you, Shree Nadkarni, for such a sane - be it countercultural - advice. Looking forward to more of your videos!

I really like OneNote, mostly because I use a Windows PC and laptop for work, but it works just as well on Apple devices using native apps. I find it's much better at clipping web content. I also often import PDF documents that I want to markup and highlight, which works great on my iPad with the Apple Pencil. It works seamlessly between Apple and Windows environments natively, without having to use it in a web browser (although you can if you have to). And I find it's much easier to organize content into notebooks, tabs, and sections. There's also a feature that I really like where it can import your meeting details from Outlook directly into a note.

Sorry if this sounds rude, but putting your tasks in a notes app is a really bad idea. Using each tool for what it was designed for is a basic principle of organization and simplicity. It's not about making it complex, it's about doing it the right way. A practical example: if I have a task to do exactly on February 19th (today is February 2nd), the notes app would certainly end up making me forget about it, or I would have to write a lot more to understand days and times. In the end, it would be more complex than a simple task app, as well as less efficient. It wouldn't even work for a basic organization, only considering dates. Imagine with different projects. It's simple: notes app for notes and tasks app for tasks. No excess organization, categorization, etc. Simple, but the right way.

I too have returned to apple notes. I’ve wasted countless hours and a fair bit of money on all the latest note taking fads. Notion was so complex and took so much time I found myself using apple notes to take notes on how to set up notion for notes…it finally clicked that it wasn’t worth it. Notability and GoodNotes I liked because of the ease of transition between handwriting and typing, plus I could highlight what I typed. That’s my biggest complaint about apple notes. If I type something I can’t go back and write or highlight over it. Hopefully that will come later. Unfortunately until then I’ll keep using GoodNotes for school and apple notes for everything else. If it comes to apple notes then I will move everything to apple notes. I have found that people spend so much time trying to find a new app to be productive that they fail to be productive.

That video was a true epiphany to me. It was like looking myself at the cloudy mirror I have created with a bunch of apps, just to conclude that I don’t have a simple go-to note-taking app. I keep saying that when you live in the Apple ecosystem, Apple thinks for you so you have to make almost no decision in terms of hardware and software. So why did I leave Apple notes? I suppose I found Evernote back then, an app I stopped using a long ago. I will go back to Apple Notes and Reminders. The simpler the better and the more effective. I even switched from Apple Calendar, which worked amazing, to Fantastical, following Ali Abdaal’s recommendation, but I feel much more confortable with Apple Calendar. I guess the problem most people have, those who aren’t “productivity gurus” who only live to get new apps and updates (do they even relax at some point?), is that we get lost with the features of whatever app while we lose perspective of what we want an app to do for us. Thank you very much for your illuminating video!!!

Agree on not just switching apps constantly, that's the problem with most people, they consume a lot of content about being productive, try all the productivity apps but never actually just focus on being productive.

But after learning programming, I need some notes that can be taken care of with multiple platform like windows and linux. Obsidian work best for me for putting some long documented note. But still use apple notes for my daily quick note that just need to be jotted down quickly. I've grown accustomed to the apple notes for quite a long time. It's like my personal notepad. Everything is in there. While obsidian is mostly like a big notebook that need to be documented in a proper workflow.

And the application itself is not cross-platform, of course, there is a web version, but it's a little different. What you can comfortably do in another app will be pain and suffering in Notes. So it seems to me that we should not cling to one single faithful instrument, since there is none, but take the best of all worlds.

I agree for the most part. I just hate that there are graphical limitations with Apple Notes. If you’re using mainly with text and adding individual images, yes, but if you want to mix graphics, images and scribble, it’s just as bad as OneNote. Freeform does that now but it’s not notes. That’s what I struggle with how I like taking notes. Even with tables, the limitations create visually unappealing results. Maybe I expect too much but I struggle with this as well.

I use Notion and Notability. Apple notes is nice, and the handwriting support is good, but I need something more structured for use as a second brain and tasking tool. So, I use Notability for live handwritten notes, and I use Notion for tasking, long-term storage, evergreen information, and basically anything that has been processed and I want to hold onto long-term.

This is all good advice, IF Apple Notes would allow me to work in a way that makes sense to me I’d use it. For example, checklists. I mostly use checklists for shopping trips, meaning once I tick an item off the list I do not want or need to see it again. My mind and eyes find lists confusing enough, without irrelevant items remaining on them. Yet Apple notes will not give me a simple setting like “delete or hide list item when checked”. So I have to use Microsoft To Dos specifically for checklists, because it gives me that simple functionality and doesn’t bind me to “their way” like Apple always does. In fact, when I went back to iPhone I found iOS forced Microsoft to remove a handy predictive function that To Dos has on Android. I like Apple’s products, but at the same time they can be extremely rigid and overbearing and force people to look for alternatives.

Thank you for the video, I tried to switch from Apple Notes multiple times. Now I was searching for Obsidian reviews to get into that. But all the time when I was trying to make a switch it was a chaos. Truly Apple Notes is very good and provides with me with a lot of functions. Now I will go 100% in to A.Notes, because there is still much to learn and build my knowledge about the app.

Thanks for the video. I just made the same decision. I was so handicapped by switching apps all the time. I would use Evernote for a couple days. Then move to Obsidian and copy everything from Evernote over. Then Bear etc.. I finally realized I was just wasting time and getting nothing done. Is Apple Notes perfect? No. But it gets the job done and best of all free.

I am going to 2nd using evernote. I started back in 2004 or 2005 and it was SO amazing. I was getting subscription fatigue and wanted to move away to something better (or at least equal) so I switched to Apple Notes about 5 years ago... Then something went wrong and AN lost most of my attachments - they looked like they were there, but they wouldn't come up... So, I started from Scratch with AN...and to this day I have only about 1000 notes and I find AN very slow and unable to search inside of notes for anything of value... I am on the lated MacOS and AN is SLOW to start and quit. My MBPro has 32GB of ram...so it's not my hardware... I am seriously thinking of switching BACK to Evernote and STAYING there...till I die....

I used to use an app called Joplin, however, I found out Microsoft One has more features and I use grapgics tablet to take notes and Joplin don't support that, but I kept the same system. I organize my notes the same way O used to. And my Joplin notes are in my one drive, so If I need to check old notes, I'll go there. I tried Apple Notes and I don't like. spotlight search is really great for searching notes. That’s the main reason I fully switched from evernote. Being able to quickly find note that quick is efficient. Plus the syncing with multiple devices is amazing. I can quickly just type a long note on my macbook then quickly jump to my ipad or iphone. Ive had troubled with evernote that it took time to sync from multiple devices. It’s really not working really well for me. I’m happy that I make the change. It changed my “productivity” to whole new level. I do miss the link note from evernote. Ive always categorized my note as an index. So a quick glance with a tap is something that I’m used to. Now I just have to familiarize myself with tagging and searching.

But there is another thing to it: What are you planing to do with your notes. Organizing your todos in notes is different from taking notes for learning or reference.
