    I remember back when Microsoft was pushing Win 10 super hard, one of our computers at the place I was working at had a forced update to Windows 10 and it essentially rendered the computer unusable. You'd be in the middle of a transaction when it would suddenly blue screen on you and it'd do that several times per day. I typically preferred to do my work on Windows PCs at the time but I'm thankful that they had fucking iPads for us to do our jobs with. Now, I'm not a luddite at all but ever since then, it's made me extremely wary about forced updates that change your operating system. Because no, I don't trust that it will be an extremely stable user experience.

    1:38:20 An example I can think of for an RTS having banter would be Dawn of War: Dark Crusade, specifically the Stronghold missions, the developers wrote dialogue for all 7 Commanders having banter in the mission. The enemy commanders who's strongholds you invaded will heckle you and you commander will return in kind. Since you can pick any of the 7 Commanders it massively increases the replay value of those missions as you are eager to hear what dialogue exchange would happen on a mission that is effectively the same barring your army choice.

    Greg Egan has written at least three short stories set in the same universe where an AI system turns books into game worlds. Your conversion about automatic game (or other content) generation around 41:00 is reminiscent of that - note that I'm not mentioning them because they are the best stories ever written (they are not, but they are okay). (The stories take place within said worlds and do not focus very much on their actual creation). They can be found in his book Instantiation (which is also the name of the last story of the three - so don't start with that one; also, I don't remember the name of the other two, but they are near the end in that collection and there is (exactly, iirc) one other short story in-between each one of them).

    18:30 I work cybersecurity, and I don't need a paper to explain this one to you. Every time there is a security update, the vulnerabilities that are patched are well-known and easily looked up by anyone with the right tools. In my experience, a high percentage of security breaches are caused because some threat actor targeted a known vulnerability in an older version of the software that a company is using, simply because that company didn't update. Actually, when I'm red teaming to find vulnerabilities in a program or network architecture, known vulnerabilities from outdated versions are the first thing I look into, and almost every modern system can be hacked this way. So many large corporations basically have massive backdoors simply because they don't update their software. There's a whole job title for someone who does nothing but patch known vulnerabilities, but I forget the name of it. Suffice to say, yeah, update your software, lmao. Even if you aren't navigating to suspicious sites or downloading iffy software, your computer can still become vulnerable to worms that hop between networked devices.

  • @AbandonedVoid

    @AbandonedVoid

    2 жыл бұрын

    I do want to add that not giving the user the choice to update is also a security risk, though, because updates can break other software that's used to secure a system, obviously. So it isn't as straight-forward as "always update" in the actual field of cybersecurity, but these are not the kinds of security concerns that most end-users have at home. For casual home users, automatic updates is a clearly good move, but powerusers have to ask whether they're willing to sacrifice security for functionality. But assume that any system you aren't updating is compromised, and do your banking and other important transactions on a separate device, is my advice

    "density of interaction where they though of every" is common in rouguelikes (not rouguelites) because they only sometimes even have graphics and animations are nonexistent, they can do everything for gampeplay, getting higher interactivity than pretty much any other type of game. What I feel as the best demonstrative one for this would be cataclysmdda

    I can't remember which games, but I've seen at least a couple on steam that had no achievements. But I only noticed that because people were complaining about it in the comments. It's a bit disturbing to me that something as inane and tacked on as "achievements" has become a basic requirement for some consumers. You always see people comment about how they are "100%-ing" the game, which is also disturbing, because it means that they're engaging in all kinds of unintended tasks just for the sake of checking some arbitrary boxes. It's just weird to me that you can give human beings any kind of representation of an incomplete task, and they'll become motivated to do whatever it takes. There's an opportunity in here for a clever indie game that plays on peoples relationship with these achievements.

    for achievements, there are different kinds: - make it to this point in the game/defeat this boss; these are almost pointless, but do track your progress through the game. - accomplish easy feat, such as kill 10 monsters. almost everyone gets these, and they are almost pointless. - accomplish normal feat; these are the kind where you would probably only accomplish the feat if you focused on a certain aspect of gameplay through the course of a single playthrough. these are the kind I like the most because they provide a way to track your experiences of the game over time. they aren't pointless but they aren't grindy either, they expand the game by tracking many of the various ways of playing the game. coming up with interesting achievements of this kind can really improve a game IMO. I think though that this could be replaced with a high quality "high scores" system that tracks your overall accomplishments from within the game. - accomplish difficult feat. these are the kind where you would never accomplish the feat unless you specifically spent time grinding away at it just for the sake of accomplishing it. these I do not like, but I could see some people liking them.

    This was enjoyable. I do have some ideas for improvement though. Ross is a chaotic thinker and will jump at what you give him to talk about, and then probably go off from there to other stuff. That's all fine, but it's a good idea to at least initially have a structure to an interview such as this. I think you should begin by introducing him, mention his history but more importantly the current projects he has going, his main series (arguably), "Ross's game dungeon". Then ask him some questions about that, what it is, why he does it, why it's great, what are his favorite episodes, what is coming up. This way people who are just shallowly interested will get a better idea of him and his channel. Later on you can deep dive into special topics such as GUI, Games as a service and then veer off into the sunset with whatever.

    These conversations are not meant for those who, as you describe, are shallowly-interested. I don't think this was anywhere close to my best work as a host, but I'm not going to ask questions about subjects I'm less interested in when I only have each guest on for a limited amount of time - that will just bore me, which is as sure a sign as any that it's time to check out.

    "a friend of mine has a conspiracy theory that maybe they're selecting some of the users as sort of surprise beta testers" as far as I know, yes, that's exactly what they do, this applies also to chrome and possibly other software. chrome released an update that invalidated certificates or something (can't remember the details; it was them enforcing a certificate rule of some kind? or maybe had something to do with cookies?) but since it was first applied to only 10% of users, only some people had issues with it. microsoft does the same thing, which is the optional "monthly quality rollup" or whatever they call it updates. they release the update optionally first and then if it doesn't explode, then they release it officially and force it on everyone else.

    @@TheNoFraudsClub The worst case scenario of this is on GOG. I assume it's a bug, but it has been around for years. For me and many other people, each achievement opens the fullscreen GOG overlay, interrupting gameplay, usually without even pausing the game. I don't need to mention how great that is in the middle of a fight. What's even greater, the GOG overlay can't be closed without the task manager, going into "Details" and shutting it down from there. That's especially annoying because most multiplayer tools are bound to the overlay. Whenever you need to reconnect to a game session (due to disconnect or whatever), you also need to restart GOG and the game, to get the overlay back and also reactivate the chance to get paralyzed by another achievement. Brilliant feature to make people fall in love with achievements.
