Just How Powerful is USA 20mm Phalanx CIWS

Ғылым және технология

Here is why the Phalanx CIWS is so Powerful. The Phalanx Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) is a rapid-fire, computer-controlled, radar-guided gun that can defeat anti-ship missiles and other close-in threats on land and at sea.
At sea, it is designed to defeat anti-ship missiles and “close-in” threats that have pierced other lines of defense. On land, as part of the U.S. Army’s counter-rocket, artillery and mortar systems, it detects and destroys incoming rounds. It also helps provide early warning of attacks.

I worked with a guy who was on one of the first ships with the Phalanx. He said they had a time calibrating the sensors as they were so sensitive and the gun so aggressive, once the incoming missile was shot down the guns expended all their ammo shooting the falling parts, then the splashes, then firing at the splashes generated by the rounds hitting the water.

Gtifighter when you spend almost $700 billion a year on your military, it really isn’t that big of a deal. Also, it doesn’t cost a million per BRRRRRRRRRT lol. Each round cost $30 and when engaging a single target the system usually shoots anywhere from 200-400 rounds. Do the math and that’s like $6000-$12,000 per engagement. Worst case scenario most it can shoot before it runs out of rounds is 4500 and thats $135,000. So yeah that’s a bit of an exaggeration.

I was stationed on a carrier and watched ours tear apart incoming missiles and rockets like a boss. The noise it makes is terrifying. Like a giant zipper being opened fast. They don’t actually track and shoot. They pick a point in space that it knows the target will enter. It puts up a wall of lead that the target flies into. If the target moves or changes course it will develop a new solution and reengage. Very cool

@@lgd1974 That was just how it was explained to me. Because it has to have a lead, it calculated where the target is and adds lead, so the bullets will meet the target when it gets there. If not, the bullets would be way behind the target because of the time it takes for the bullets to travel. Of course if the target is coming straight at it, it will not have to lead the target so it will shoot directly at it. That's not how it works?

The grandfather of this was the gun turrets on the B29 superfortress during World War II. The guns were computer controlled. The gunner just used an optical sight to follow an incoming fighter. A computer aimed the gun, adjusted for altitude, distance, wind, gravity, humidity, etc. Then fired the guns. It was so effective that a single B29 fought off 79 Japanese fighters in a 4 hour running battle while shooting down 7 of them and landed safely without a scratch. This was in 1944/45.
