Just how orderly are the Germans? | Meet the Germans

There must be order - or so goes the German saying. Rachel Stewart takes a look at the German love affair with rules, organization and order.
Rachel is on a mission to investigate the quirks and idiosyncrasies of daily life in Germany. Every two weeks she explores a new topic - from beer to nudity to complicated grammar - and heads out to get some tips from the Germans themselves.
Rachel moved from the UK to Germany in 2016. As a relative newcomer she casts a fresh eye over German clichés and shares her experiences of settling into German life. You'll find more from Meet the Germans on KZread or at dw.com/MeettheGermans.

They can't seem to do it right in Cardiff in the UK despite there having been a green bag scheme since 2005 for plastic, glass and paper.. It existed before but you had to pay for the green bags for a few years so people stopped recycling. When it was brought back again different things were allowed in the green bags so textiles weren't allowed anymore. Then garden waste bins and waste food caddies were introduced a few years after that. On bin day in some parts of the city the green bags are ripped apart by cats and gulls as most people in those parts put food waste and/or unwashed out food containers in them.

Amrit K.B I don’t know about studies about OCD in Germany but for example I need to have forks, knives and spoons grouped when putting them into the dishwasher. I really don’t like it when they’re all over the place. I also need to rearrange them if someone else put them in differently. I’ve been to India once and I was just making sure that I have my belongings in order. I didn’t mind the chaos so much because I knew I wouldn’t stay there permanently. A lot of us Canadians can easily relate to why Germans value order. It's about being good neighbors, getting things done in the most efficient manner so you can enjoy the rest of your life. Everyone's time is extremely expensive and very limited so the most inconsiderate thing you can do to someone else is not respect their time with you. Also nothing drive me more crazy than a tool out of place because someone failed to put it back properly and you end up missing your promised time to get a job done.

It's not that Germans are "orderly", it's just that they don't do anything half-way. If they are going to "let loose" then they let loose fully. If they are going to live an "organic" lifestyle on a commune off the grid...then it is going to be the most intense organic/off the grid commune...

Yes. The Germans are very orderly. I was at a volksfest in the late 1980s and a fellow American and I were watching the Germans drive "bumper cars". The Germans wouldn't bump into anyone. They went around and around in a nice an orderly fashion around the track. Well, these Americans were going to show the Germans how to play bumper cars. Terry and I went freaking nuts on the Germans. We drove "against" traffic. Singled out the "WWII aged guy" to get bumped. He shook his fist at us. The younger Germans smiled and laughed. I loved Germany and the German people. :-)
