Maybe only? Dude, Messi has scored 650 goals and counting. But he can scold Messi all day long about penalty taking. Koeman rarely missed one, Mesi is far more irregular in that discipline. He's doing better this season, though.

The interesting thing about football is that the best players each year are almost always the midfielders and strikers. We are obsessed with goals and assists. We do not value defenders and goalkeepers as much as we should. Because their contributions are less evident. In this case you had a defender who ALSO had the goals........yeah I would say that is very much comparable to the elites like Messi, Ronaldo, Lewandowski today.

The dude is a legendary FOOTBALLER...I bet he would've made a career as striker with that instinct for goal. But thankfully he didn't because that makes his story that much more interesting. This dude did it all... defend, pass, and attack. I do agree about the coaching part though... hopefully he gets more chances to build his name as a coach once he moves on. He really did shoot himself in the foot by taking this Barcelona team when he did (honestly, anyone that would've taken this Barcelona was pretty much fucked anyway).

At his active time I was extremely impressed by Ronald Koeman. It's a shame that he is almost forgotten nowadays. During his time at Barcelona (as a libero/defender)he had a hgher goals per match ratio than Zidane (an all time great midfielder) during his time at Real Madrid. When the football world talks about free kick grandmasters, David Beckham is always mentioned, while Koeman is hardly ever recalled. Just compare how many goals Koeman scored compared to Beckham?

As a Dutch guy and watched many games of Ronald Koeman i have to admit to have forgotten how good he was at scoring. I knew he had a devastating right leg with one of the hardest shots in the world(over 120khm) He had a reputation and people got scared, because so players have been hit very hard buy a ball he fired. But 250 goals, that just simply unheard. Many strikers would love to have those statistics. Just unreal tbh! In 88 we were European champions, and we should have won the WC in 90. Somehow we ended up losing 4 WC finals...unreal as well. Thanks for the video!

Hey! I had to trim a few seconds of the video at 3:58 dude to copyright issues. Over those few seconds all I said is that despite their first game loss against the soviet union, the netherlands would go on to win all other group stage match and then beat Germany as Koeman scored the opener only to find the Soviet Union in the final and take revenge by beating them to the title. Us Finns remember Koeman very well. I don’t remember what was the game in Helsinki Olympic Stadium for Holland against Finland, but I remember one time Koeman shot his incredibly hard shot which missed the goal but the ball boy catched the ball mid-air. The hole crowd gave the ballboy standing ovation.

Koeman is an absolute legend of the game. He is one of the true greats. Unbelievable player. Doesnt get the recognition he deserves. Not only a great goal scorer but a great passer passer. He was a key player for Barca and Holland back then. Great defender and scored some amazing goals plus he was a playmaker too for both teams. Arguably the best free kick + long shot taker of all time. Absolute legend.

Koeman told during and interview, he perfected his shot by practicing free kicks after regular training. From young age, he did so, every single day, year after year. At the end, he managed to score 1 out of 3.

He was a great defender when considering positioning and timing. His Achilles heel was his speed. As a sweeper, with other defenders covering his back, he was one of the best ever. Unfortunately, Cruyff's Barcelona played often with only 3 defenders, whick left the defense very vulnerable to counterattack.

Well, when you have El Pibe, Leo, CR7 and Il Fenomeno you just don't need to worry about scoring :)
