Thanks Doc for a very comprehensive take on this. I haven't had one in hand to truly judge myself, but the only two things I like about it 'appearance' wise is the low profile head and the selector switch seems like a metal upgrade. That being said, I'll stick with my Dual-80's. I like and trust them and they are time-tested.

My snap-on guy just got one in. I had been wanting to see one. He handed it to me the first thing I checked was back drag. I held that ratchet for less than 5 seconds and said, yup I hate it, and handed it back. The Dual 80 is a great product, don't mess with it.

Yeah. It’s weird when you see one of a companies supposedly best products and decide the other design is better. Like Gearwrench’s 120 vs 90 tooth. The 90 tooth is just a better ratchet. Less back drag, stronger, etc.

You realize you dont actually know backdrag till you put a socket on it and yse it? Craftsman v series on shelf feels like it has a lot of backdrag but when i actually use the ratchet the backdrag is hardly present

very strange of snap on to have this problem. how did it get released to the public? they should of known it was a flop before it got released. the executives and bean counters need to be fired. they were always known as having one of the best ratchets. very uncharacteristic of them 😳

Inside of it is wild, the back drag issue is just too much grease though. The ball detent for the forward/reverse lever is glued to the spring, and god help any stupid fucking asshole like me that decides he doesn't want glue on it.

I went mostly all Koken for ratchets, sockets extensions etc a good while back; life's been 'ponies/rainbows' ever since. Life's too short for piddling with Snap-On's quirks, idiosyncrasies drama & astronomical pricing... not to mention I haven't even seen one of their trucks around town in a decade.

When you pay the prices that Snap-on wants, you expect to not be their lab rat. I don't think it's that, even companies without the truck pricing manage to do testing and will send out samples to folks in their target trade and get useful real-world feedback from them before beginning a rollout for general sale. They were charging full price for these babies from the start. It wasn't low profile at all. They're all over the trucks, and CEO Pinchuk was yapping on and on about how hot it is in investor conference calls.

I guess you guys are right. Disappointing from Snap-on®.

My son has been buying the new style. I am adequately stocked up on ratchets, so I am not tempted to add the new version. I am a huge fan of the 80 tooth style. I went to other brands than Snap-On to get smooth fine tooth function until Snap-On introduced the 80 tooth pear head style. I tried a few of the Snap-On round head fine tooth ratchets. They are okay, but they feel quirky to me. I am old enough to recall when SK introduced the 70 tooth ratchet. I purchased 3 versions. SK did a tremendous job with that tool. Extremely thin necked handle, small head, but I didn't particularly like the knurled handle. I used those ratchets exclusively over the old style Snap-On pear head ratchets due to the slim features and short handle swing. I broke the reversing switch actuating pins on the SK, but the Snap-On clone had the same problem. Easy to fix, but disappointing. The SK reversing switch screw was prone to loosen since torquing the screw bound the direction switching function. It eventually dawned on me that a dab of removable loc-tite resolved that issue. You really get into the weeds with the issues with the new 100 Snap-On ratchet version. I value premium tools and I am guilty of micro analyzing small tool performance issues as well. The small issues can make or break my preference decisions. Snap-On is a great company, and they consistently out perform the competition, but they are not always a winner. I prefer Proto pullers over Snap-On. Their precision tools were long rebranded mid tier tools with Snap-On price premium. Their pliers are arguably rugged, but are often very clunky, stiff jointed and cutters require more hand squeeze force than less expensive brands. I stick with Klein and Knipex for daily use pliers. Proto line up pins are my favorite brand due to the slim and long slow taper. I love my dozen or so versions of Snap-On dead blow hammers and mallets, but the ball pien design is an ugly shape and often a traditional style head is more ergonomic. Snap-On punches and chisels are wonderful, but if Starrett makes an equivalent tool, I will use the Starrett every time. I own several brands of premium wrenches, but Snap-On wrench design beats all competition in every dynamic in my preference. I don't even know how many Snap-On wrench sets that I own, various vintages, features and styles. The vintage wrenches with the slim taper rounded body feels the very best in my hand. Some of the newer logo wrench body corners hurt my hand on hard pulls, but these era tools give features like open end flank drive, and the chrome is shinier. Snap-On screwdrivers are hard to beat. Even makers like Craftsman occasionally made superb scores. I purchased a new late 1970's fiberglass handled ball pein Craftsman hammer. It remains a favorite now going on 5 decades. I own one Matco ratchet that is a preferred winner even though it is the only non Snap-On tool in a kit including about 10 ratchets. I am very loyal to the premium tool brand for each specific trade, but I am not a brand purist. Sometimes I yield to the second runner premium brand simply due to premium brand costs. Thank you for the 100 tooth detail review.

Don't forget that the threads which can get stripped are on the cover plate which can be replaced.

That’s one reason I wanted one so much. I have 2 of these new ratchets with one being used a ton and it’s not really getting any smoother.

Good video. I own the FLF100, have the freewheel issue, and back-drag is bad. I had the dealer install the kit to address the problem part #RKRF100, it did nothing. The only thing different in the kit is the spring is shorter. Snap On claims the back-drag is in line with the Dual 80, no way! He also questioned why someone would put pressure on the direction lever, that's funny. Lets just say the ratchet is not up to Snap On standards. FTR I have 40 years in the business. I also tried the revised version a friend has and they freewheeled too applying pressure in the right place.

Mine was bad at first but when it breaks in its very smooth.. but for that kind of money before buying another one it better be good to go when i walk of the truck

My thoughts on this ratchet are if it’s not broke don’t fix it and the dual 80’s weren’t broken. I know everyone always thinks more is better including me but I love the dual 80 ratchets and I even use my tml70 1/4 drive probably more than my tl72. I guess time will tell and I may eventually end up with one of the 100 tooth ratchets but I’m in no big hurry.

The first batch my dealer had were terrible. Rough mechanism and floppy head. Passed on it. Second batch greased properly with an upgraded washer in the flex joint excellent. No issues with the one I bought.

Grease is the big secret for the 100teeth ,I used air tool grease because it ain't very sticky

Aus, your right , they just need some tweaking ; the repair kits have a new spring with the ball attached to the spring end for easier servicing.

I have a feeling since snap on is a public traded company investors are pressuring to increase profits. And by doing that they rushed the RND for this ratchet and therefore for the poor performance. This has been repeated with other company they milk a company good name to the ground.

Got one when it first came out and returned it. Didn't last 3 fasteners before it was messing up. Back drag was horrible. I used Pittsburgh with smoother action and that's very sad.

Mine had very high back drag brand new, was over greased from the factory. Cleaned it up a bit, and it's gorgeous as far as that is concerned. I will say, the flex head was floppy brand new, and it was already over tight, it's something I have to live with, I guess.

Hey Doc. I have a few of these ratchets now. Stubby, long flex and extra long flex. Back drag is decently high on mine. Breaks in a little or if you add some more lube. The flex head is a real problem. My long one was super floppy within a month. Getting rebuilt today actually when my dealer comes as he had to order a kit. I have found with the back drag if you are actually using it on a fastener it isnt so terrible compared to other high tooth count ratchets above 80teeth. Frankly I like the logo. Its not the classic logo but I think its classy. My experience with the free spin is if you lift up in the long end of the selector switch it will free spin but other than that it doesnt do it at all for me. Best regards!

That logo is actually older. They're just putting it on the first run of these. After that, they'll have the newer logo.

I got one medium length chrome handle 3/8 and I enjoy it it’s smooth and strong I’ve used it on some stuff I thought might break it the back drag and the free spinning with the selector pushed in are major issues but I got a good deal bc I was the first to point it out to my dealer hopefully they get the issues worked out and I can get a long 1/2 in the 100 like I’ve been wanting

I'd like to see you get your hands on a Stahlwille finetooth ratchet one day, like a 452QR, see how it stacks up against some of the finer snap ons.

If one is complaining about head profile and counting millimeters, you need to just swap that 3/8 for a 1/4. Most of the tight space work I do is ALL 1/4. 90% of my ratchets are Snap On, but Dual 80. Love them. I also buy a lot of 1990’s-2014 vintage Snap On new on eBay. Best ratchets on the market besides Koken Japan (lower back drag).

I refuse to pay Snap-On prices. So I got the Icon 3/8 with the comfy handle. $65. Not broken yet, but if it does it has a lifetime warranty (but only with proof of purchase so save your receipts).

I got the icon with the fixed head for $25 due to an exchange issue with a Quinn 90T ratchet. For the price I am 100% happy with it.

I like your back drag measuring device. I've read about the back drag and free wheeling complaints with the new 100 tooth ratchet. Sometimes ratchet mechanisms need a break in period to free up. Perhaps with all the moving parts in the new mechanism they need to work themselves in. Any ratchet with the thumb reversing lever will tend to freewheel when placing downforce on the head. I'm sure Snap-on will address the issues.

I was thinking the same thing. I personally have had brand new ratchets that felt pretty notchy at first. It wasnt until using it for a couple months that it started feeling really smooth.

Honestly, I’ve felt the back drag and thought the same thing. But on a drain plug, I was ratcheting off, the dual 80 and the dual 100 both stopped around the same point. Even though it feels measurable, when you’re ratcheting it it’s not a huge difference between the two. And it’s much harder to measure that way compared to this traditional way with a scale.

I got the 100thoith ratchet I didn't get a flex head I like the bigger comfort grip handle they also chrome hard handle so far I've had no problems with it so far I paid $183 with tax for it

I have the non flex f100, and thankfully the backdrag has gotten much better with use, but I haven’t seen any benefit from the 100 teeth vs the dual 80, and I enjoy the feel of the 80 way more. I have the newer locking flexhead with the dual 80, and the ribs on the handle have already worn down so much that there is a great deal of play/wobble, whereas my 3yr old Matco is still like new. Also the locking switch will move with the slightest touch (such as lightly hitting something while lowering it into the engine bay). I appreciate their willingness to experiment, but I think they rushed these to market.

Twice the back-drag of the F-80 is a huge deal breaker! I'll stick with my "silky smooth" F-80 until Snap On gets their act together. How did you get this one?

I have two of these new ratchets. Even after almost 5 months of use daily it hasn’t really gotten any smoother. Neither one of them have the free spinning problem. I really want to like them but I find myself going back to my Koken ratchets more and more unless I’m really putting force on the ratchets. Then it’s either these,a duel 80, or matco. I won’t feel bad if I break one of them.

The 1/2" dual 80 moved the screws from the drive side to the switch side maybe 5 years ago. Maybe a structural improvement that wasn't a huge priority on the smaller drive sizes?

Hearing nothing but bad reviews over here in the uk. And to me...that comfort grip handle looks cheap. Needs to go back to the drawing board. Its very disappointing for such a industry leading company. My guess is they released a limited batch to see what feedback they would get

I love the 80 tooth ratchet from snap on and I love fine tooth ratchets so I logically thought it would be better so I told my dad who has a snap on dealer to get one for me. When I got it I IMMEDIATELY was dissatisfied because of how rough the ratcheting mechanism feels compared to the lesser tooth count brother of them. I’ll stick with the 80 tooth

got a new 80 tooth ratchet the other day, had the same thing with backdrag, asked my snapon guy why, he took it apart and took out a little o ring, apparently there was two of them, felt great after that. i dont like that much backdrag

I don't like how it looks. It looks like a GearWrench. So almost all of my rathcets are Snap-On. I have 1 Matco 15" 3/8 Locking Flex. It is my absolute favorite ratchet. That being said, I had issues with the switch flopping when I first got it. After 2 warranties now its been perfect without issue for about 2 years.

The complaint of the lever being pushed in allowing the ratchet to free spin happened on the previous gen of ratchets too, so get over it

I’m a heavy equipment mechanic and am waiting for a lockable flex head model to come out.

I wonder if there's a break in required to smooth it out. I use a dual 80 snap on made in 2007 and it has gotten much smoother over the years. I take the grease out of it roughly every 5 years, clean it out completely dry then add a different grease. Kluber isoflex 152 is what I use the most, but the smoothest grease I have for the ratchet mechanism is a double zero NLGI grade lithium made in Japan by Kyodo yushi.

Every professional is getting a giggle out of this! Put a couple hours on it and let me know how it feels 😁

Funny thing about backdrag my cheapest ratchets have the least amount of backdrag...and I dont think snap on ever cared much about back drag...an average amount has always been fine with them..

The 100teeth love air tool grease

i got one the day our truck got them and havent seen a single one since. i love mine but out of 10 on the truck the one i got was the only one worth a shit. the rest all were very floppy or way too tight which can be fixed, but the ratcheting mechanism was stupidly tight and horrible to use. the one good one found and have on the truck is my absolute favorite ratchet wrench ive owned

i am very very glad i tried every single one they had on that truck since every single other one was just horrible

had a dual 80 3/8 long flex head on my wish list,after checking found out has now been discontinued and unless my dealer can find old stock,will have to buy the new fandango version.

It would be nice to see them actually update things. Also, why the F can’t they actually bother to chamfer the perimeter of the head??? That sharp edge thing is dumb. Like they charge enough that their ratchets should be the absolute nicest available both inside and out.

Does anyone make a universal rubber handle that slips over ratchet handles?

Are snap on ratchets that much superior to nepros ratchets from your experience?

The yolk of the ratchet is also thinner and has a small pin past the size of the duel 80 twice as thick there was really no space saved

Have they released this as a lower cost version? That would explain the different logo and the hampered performance Seems like an odd choice, but we have witnessed Snap-Off trash the Bahco socket line in the last few years so it wouldn't be all that surprising

Alot of people complaining about the directional lever disengaging if messed with while using the ratchet. ALL my dual 80s do the same thing. But why are you fingering the toggle switch to begin with. I need to pick one up to see what the fuss is

They didn’t need more teeth, they needed to copy the Koken backdrag and make a better locking system.

As long as it took me to switch from my old 936's to newer dual 80's, I am sure they will figure out the 100's LOL

My guess is the higher tooth count might have forced them to go with higher spring load for good engagement with the paws with smaller teeth, idk. But my Snap-on tools from the 00's and 90's are still going and with the least amount of backdrag of all my tools with little slop. Guess people get in the engineering side over at Snap-on with half baked ideas, only way that could happen is someone in management probably thought it would be a great idea to fire the high paid guys that have been around a long time Side note; i've found cheaper ~100 tooth ratchets have more backdrag than ~70 tooth because of slop. Completely negating the idea of having more teeth

Never had a single problem with my tekton ratchets.. have had 2 of my snap-on ratchets warranty-ed. I dont think ill be purchasing any more snap-on in my lifetime!

Then I asked about a different ratchet instead. Then I noticed this new 100 tooth ratchet and asked if I could pay the difference. My SO dealer smiled and said he'd exchange it straight across "just to get it out of my inventory." I will tell this story in a later video, but since you asked, now you know.

I did not have the same experience, I had a 120 tooth gear wrench that had a lot of backdrag. Company got me the snap on 3/8 anvil on 1/4 body ratchet and fell in love with the minimal backdrag, fiending for more i was on the truck and guy showed me their 100 tooth, slightly lower profile than my gear wrench. An 80 tooth 3/8 snap-on I had still had a lot of back drag compared to the snap on 100 tooth., didnt use it as much since it was non flexing. Bought the 100 tooth and I found myself rotating the anvil more than I would like to admit due to how smooth it was. grease was welling up around the anvil so it does sound like yours was packed with a lot of grease and just needed some more use. Mine did have the quirk of spinning freely but couldnt quite figure out what caused it until you said it was pressing on it. I couldnt consistently replicate, and figured if it was a problem I could just warranty it.

Any one of the issues you raised might not be a deal breaker but when you add them all up and include the cost of the tool itself, you have a problem. Further, no premium tool should have backdrag that stiff. but I guess they designed it that way to make the pawl stronger considering you have a 100T design. I have the Gear wrench 90T and 120T wrenches and I prefer the 90T I honestly think you don't need more than 90 teeth for 99.9% of what you need.

Doc not a fan of new ratchet I broke it already over a dozen times and stopped using mine too???I heard they took them off the market and going back to drawing board with them to....absolutely hate it too..stick with my daul 80s too??

Don't rip yourself off go to the Post Office put it in a dollar envelope and send it back to Snap-on. Tell them you're totally unsatisfied I need a dual 80 equivalent

I don't buy much Snap-on basically only specialty stuff no one else has. My dealer is shit, pretty sure he just does it for a hobby, he had no clue about the problems with this ratchet. I was dumbfounded, I told him Snap-on pulled it off their f@$&ing web site. Grabbed a ratchet and showed him every problem people were complaining about.

Two different logo type font on one ratchet, Ugly handle, ugly old timey logo, ugly head design, too much back drag, etc... Do they know they have so much competition now with the likes of Koken Grearwrench, Tone, Hazet, etc...They're less expensive too. They need to fire the whole team and CEO for letting this abomination out of the building. Maybe this way their tool prices can come down as well.

You don’t have enough ratchets

My guy has them for sale. I'm not one of these assholes pissing away money on every ratchet from every tool truck, so I won't buy it. They say the average mechanic owns 18 ratchets. I have 10 but only use 5. I could get rid of 6 or 7 and be ok. I don't like the handle on these which is the biggest reason I won't buy it

I like my okd craftsman ratchets alot better than snapons, even new v seres and the short usa revive craftsman ratchets work better for me.matco ratchets are better than snappys ratchets as they are much less low profile and easier to fit in tight spaces. The only advantage of snapon ratchets i see is strength. Snapons metal is stronger than anyone elses out there. And for a regular vehicle mech in 2024 pretty much every ratchet is strong enough.

I have no doubt that Snap On makes quality tools, but I just can't understand why anyone would buy them unless it's purely just a collector/hobby thing. It's been proven over and over on very reputable KZread channels that Snap On often times makes tools that are worse than tools half or even less than their price. Their marketing team deserves a raise.

for a collector item that gets little use it is fine. however kinda regret not buying koken. tho i got a good snapon truck.

This new ratchet is trash and feels cheap....there was nothing wrong with the dual 80...matter of fact i actually bought extra rebuild kits for mine incase they decide to stop making rebuild kits........snap-on is known for excellence in ratchets.......dont ruin it....
