I miss beats that aren't 808 heavy, and have real instruments. Having everything digital, and having beat makers copying each other, has ruined rap music for me. I don't hate everything that's new, but a lot of it is super generic sounding. Back in the day, you could hear a beat, and know who made it, just by the style of the beat. After the internet gave up all of the game to new beat makers, everyone just copies what's hot now. You used to have to figure things out on your own, and that's what gave people a sound. Now new beat makers just watch videos of people making beats, and copy what they see. It doesn't take much talent, or an ear for music, to copy. You could learn to make beats in a day now. They're not going to sound original, but they'll sound like a beat. This has made me change up the genres that I make. I stopped making hip hop beats about a year ago. Hip hop has lost the soul that it used to have. Everything from beats that have originality, to lyricism. I can only guess that it's due to the audience of today's rap. Hip Hop used to have a far smaller audience, and it was better for it. Rap today is extremely mainstream. Unfortunately that has caused the genre to die, and turn into this carbon copy, that leans more towards pop and bounce music. There's only a small portion of artist who have kept it Hip Hop. I've never been a huge fan of dirty south type music. Now almost every artist is doing some form of dirty south inspired music. A lot of the new artist are probably too young to even realize this. It sucks to see the music that I loved for years, die due to originality dying. Hopefully people start caring about lyrics, and original sounding beats again someday. It seems like every time an artist with originality starts getting traction, they get killed. Pop Smoke and XXXtentacion being two of them. They understood the importance of doing something dope and different.
