I grew up in the northern tip of Maine. Moose casually walked across our porch pretty regularly and we were taught to be calm but not to interact. They were so curious. Another time when I was out running (in New Brunswick Canada), I came around a corner and a huge bull was in my path and I was like NOTHING TO SEE HERE, SIR, JUST SILENTLY BACKING UP. He left me alone, but my adrenaline 😶

As a Canuk I can tell you, Moose are extremely intelligent quadrupedal ungulates. They have an amazing memory and can remember individual persons. Many have compared the intelligence of a moose to that of a wild horse, yet unlike horses moose tend to be solitary for the most part. Most folks are afraid of a moose because of their imposing stature and of course they have seen videos of moose charging, for example: by a cow with calves or a male during the rut. During the Canadian winters Moose tend to be less grumpy and more appreciative of carrots or an apple accidentally dropped from your car while you are parked admiring them.

If you think that this law is worth changing, write to you're a local legislator with your thoughts about it. That being said, the statute clearly states that the prohibition against feeding wildlife is in effect and current as of January, 2024. Far from being some "meaningless" (as you put it) piece of arcane law, buried deep within an ancient and dusty tome of forgotten historical law, this statute is up to date and enforced, and for good reason. More people are attacked and injured or killed by aggressive moose habituated to humans than cougars and bears. Let that sink in.

The only time I was that close to a moose it was charging me along with its sibling while I was elk hunting with a friend. They were in no danger from us but we definitely were from them. Be careful! They're beautiful creatures but they give zero f's amd will destroy you in a heartbeat. I'm glad you had such a chill encounter. My biggest worry is you encountering them again and not having a gift.

Yep. It's very reckless and illegal, at least here in alaska. Someone could get hurt and the moose will be euthanized by fish and game. We had a orphan calf moose at a party house in high school that would hang out at parties, it got bigger and things didn't end well.

Moose are smarter than you think. They can associate the location of the fridge as a food source very quickly, even bring friends. If it really wanted to out of hunger, it can come back and break through since it sees you as non threatening (dominatable) to get to the source of yumyums. Some of them might get aggressive if it thinks you're hiding the gems.

My father went to this resort way up north for snowmobiling , and the resort fed an apple pie to a moose that they seen in the kitchen window. ( it could smell the pies they let cool in window sill). 2 days later they went into kitchen to find no door , no pies , and a moose in the kitchen . They ended up building him a small shelter and put a pie out for him every day , and all the resort visitors got to meet him and pet him
