Junkyard Big Block ZF5-S42 Build Part 1 | There's some bad stuff here!

Picked this up for my Cummins swapped Ford and I need to go through it before I use it. Well I sure am glad we took it apart!

For anyone else attempting this, the zf5 tech manual is available for free online and will give you step-by-step instructions. It works great as a companion to a video like this.

The M5OD was the biggest pos ever put into a truck. I've changed over 15 of them, they were all very weak, even for a 1/2 ton pickup. Last one I dealt with left me stranded in the middle of the night, 16 miles from anything...

That's interesting..because numerous amounts of people on forums associated with RBV vehicles can attest to the durability and reliability of the m5od. It IS a great transmission. Pretty much the only things that hurt them are running them low on fluid and getting them hot, which goes for practically any transmission auto or std, or using too thick of oil which can prevent fluid from reaching critical bearings. Keep them full of fluid by replacing those rubber shift plugs and drive them like the truck transmission they are, and you really won't find any more problems than other similar style gearboxes. If you're a tech and have really replaced 15 of them, I'd like to hear what your experience in diagnosing what their failures was like and what the causes were, seriously. If you're just a tinkerer/diy'er and all 15 transmissions you drove personally, then I think we would know by the most common denominator who or what was the problem by then.

Hello! Help me figure out the calculation of revolutions on the power take-off gear. Gearbox ZF s5-42 (5.72). In order to choose the right KOM and hydraulic pump, I need to know the number of revolutions that the power take-off gear makes. It is located on the intermediate shaft. It has 45 teeth on a gear ratio of 5.72 and 43 teeth on a gear ratio of 4.65. Do I understand correctly that it engages with the primary shaft, with that part of it on which there are 27 teeth on the gear ratio 5.72 and 29 teeth on the gear ratio 4.65? Then at 1000 revolutions of the motor it will have 600 revolutions at the gear ratio of 5.72 and 670 revolutions at the gear ratio of 4.65? or not? Thanks!
