    I guess I mumbled a little, so to clarify: I do *not* work for Amazon. I was referring to it being the company store that we *all* buy at, and (obliquely) how in a few years we'll probably start getting half our paychecks in Amazon store credit instead of legal tender.

    The key to thrifting in the US is to go to places with higher populations of rich people. I go to the one in Hilton Head whenever I can and get designer summer clothes and interesting decor for super cheap, but if I go to the one by my house it's all walmart clothes and ugly vases.

    My parents had a Rainbow vacuum. It used a water reservoir to trap dust, dirt, and other detritus which we would then empty into a bucket with a screen over it. When the stuff on the screen dries it ends up looking like a dryer lint filter. Great vacuum, lots of power, but moving it around was a pain as the water is heavy and sloshes around whenever it rolls. Also, you could plug the hose in on the other side of the motor and use it to inflate air mattresses. All-in-all a pretty good system as the water did a good job trapping the particles in a way that was easy to dispose of without releasing them back into the air.

    rainbow vacuums are amazing, they're wet vacuums(at least the ones that I've had), and they were extremely expensive, but they lasted our family a long time, the only thing that sucks are that you need to hose out the container when they're full and let the bowl air dry outside, otherwise they're excellent vacs those things cost like $1k iirc those things are amazing cleaners though, the suction is excellent

    Regarding the battery operated DJ-Lights: On first thought is makes not much senser, but it is nice if you don't have to run a bunch of cables when you set up on a location, especially for Floorspots (The cables look ugly so you have to conceal them and protect them from people stepping on them). So since these lights often also have wireless DMX nowadays, you can elmininate all cables and it looks very clean. Plus installing and uninstalling a bunch of cables also takes time, and time is money. With these lights it is pretty much "set up and go", and at the end of the night just pick them up and put them back into the flightcase (which also acts as a charging cradle). And if the battery lasts for the whole Evening it isn't an issue.

    The fact that your goodwill sells CRTs at all is a miracle. Most of them only sell specialty and black and white ones because they take up too much shelf space and no one buys them. Our Goodwills even say they aren't allowed to be donated there. Value Village use to throw away/recycle original iMacs with their CRTS until I bought one from their recycling pallet and they quizzed me on why I would want an "old round tv."

  • @Andyxoxx
    @Andyxoxx3 жыл бұрын

    The clips in the IMAX Laserdisc that do not fill the screen are historical clips filmed on non-IMAX film. Since old clips were filmed for TV on standard film/video at the time, subjects were typically framed up-close to compensate for the lack of detail. Enlarging this lower quality footage with tight framing to the full extent of an IMAX screen 5+ stories tall would provide an awkward and/or blurry viewing experience, so they were typically shown at a smaller size. If you notice these clips are positioned toward the bottom of the screen, this is because in the typical IMAX theater setup the entire audience is seated perpendicular to the bottom half of the IMAX screen, so the audience wouldn’t have to “look up” at the clips and they would be presented at a more comfortable viewing position. The jump to full frame video would have been the shots filmed on IMAX film and appropriate to fill the entire screen. I’m sure that the conversion to Laserdisc could have reframed the older shots to fill the entire screen for smaller sets, but typically IMAX films were such a niche market that it wasn’t worth the time/effort given the ROI.

    The local science museum (Carnegie Science center in pittsburgh) had one of those massive dome-shaped OMNIMAX theaters, admittedly I don't remember all that much about the IMAX films i saw there but I think this was a common trick, bearing in mind that the full frame in a dome shaped theater takes up basically your entire field of vision. At least from the clip you've shown here it kinda looks like the full frame shots are kinda distorted, ie. so it would look right on a massive curved screen. The I think the smaller windows are arranged on the bottom too because ordinary film clips would distort on the curved screen and a lot of them were large enough that you would have to actually tilt your head back looking up to see the top of the frame. From what I recall non-IMAX movies were usually projected such that they didn't take up the entire screen either, at a more comfortable viewing angle.

    I have the 32" Vizio set that's below it on the bottom shelf. It has the world's biggest bezels, but the picture is quite good for 720p. Still works great 14 years after I bought it. It's disturbing that I paid more for it in 2007 than I paid for the 55" 4K set that's currently in my living room. It also has the EDTV logo on it. The way I understood it, "EDTV" just meant that the device had a tuner that was ATSC-capable, but the set itself wasn't HD. Sort of a cover-your-butt measure to let people know they could receive HD broadcasts, but they would be displayed in SD with letterboxes. I still have a Philips DVD/HDD recorder from around that same era whose box touted that its tuner was EDTV.

    I still have an old 32" EDTV plasma (yeah, they actually made plasmas that small) in storage. Native resolution is something like 852x480 and it actually looks _great_ playing regular old DVDs off of a progressive scan DVD player. Nearly as good as my 1080i CRT!

    EDTV still only took a 480i analog broadcast, but they supported 480p over component video. It was a total scam on the public.

    The Grandstream ATA - USB is for power input only. Basically its a common type of 5v power supply now rather than using a 5v barrel connector. - Its probably firmware locked to a specific provisioning server address. I am not a vonage customer, but I use the grandstream units at work, I assume that by loading the mac address into your vonage account on their website, their provisioning server will wait for it to call home, then respond to it with the correct settings. The ATA then goes and does a sip registration based on the settings it received from the vonage provisioning server. - Pick up and dial *** wait * wait * and it should read out its ip address that your router issued to it.

    The rgb lights having batteries are most likely for a cleaner power source, or utility (in case the power source is not easily accessible). Most likely the former reason is why aio lights have batteries.

    That D2 plug looks a lot like some of the retail display computers I saw installed at Best Buy. They pretty commonly are just used to run a video off SD card or some kind of simple interactive display with a touch screen. I wonder if that's one of those.

    Original IMAX was actual, special movie film, shot with a special camera and projected with an imax movie projector - and looked AMAZING. The modern IMAX though, is digital image shot to the screen with laser projectors; technically kinda cool too, but the result doesn't look different than any other digital movie. Just like you said...the screen's just bigger :P

    That first Goodwill...when you looked at the lamps, the one with the grey accordion flex bit...that's actually a potentially good deal for someone if they are looking for a lamp for light treatment (such as for seasonal affective disorder). Those things are usually $50 plus, so if it worked and was being sold for under $20, I hope that made someone's day (longer).
