Jumper T18 vs Radiomaster TX16s The BEST Radio for the Money is

Jumper T18 vs Radiomaster TX16s is a hot topic right now. The two radios have a great deal in common. So what separates the T18 from the TX16s enough for you to make a decision on which one to buy?
The only real way to answer this question is to focus on the functional differences between the Jumper and Radiomaster offers. Given both radios use OpenTx firmware and the same multiprotocol module; software and software driven capabilities are not the driving force behind the better option. The best radio is the one offering the best hardware configuration and we'll uncover the differences in hardware over the course of this video.

    Great video!!! I believe a lot of people were waiting for you to do this video even though everyone that already had the RM knew the answer before watching. Yes RM has already added the speaker upgrade to the new batches being made so it’s pretty much flawless now. As I mentioned before the wheel is a moving part and putting to much stress on it either by accident or just having gorilla strength will snap the small end opposite of the micro switch ive seen it done on spectrum radio’s. That being said no it’s not a deal breaker but my preference is metal over plastic every time. Keep up the good work you’re doing everyone really appreciates your honest reviews and you’re opinions matter to us even if sometimes I like to give you a hard time by disagreeing lol. Thanks for the comment and show of support Freddie. Appreciate it. I posted a picture of the jog wheel in the community tab. If someone breaks that thing, they're using it wrong. In any event it takes about 3 minutes to get it out, so a replacement would be quite easy. kzread.info/dron/cJwn8V3MTsib2LjAcTnarg.htmlcommunity

    Jim Snodgrass I agree that the wheel is not precise at times when I go to click something it will select something other then my intention. You just have to be careful not to turn the wheel when pressing down. On the RM you should be pressing the wheel on the bottom end that’s where the micro switch is located. on the other end (top) the wheel has a small shaft that fits into a rotating sensor that picks up the side to side action of the wheel it’s this end that I’m referencing with being plastic that with to much force can break the shaft.

    @@FASTFREDDIE-R.C. Except it's not plastic. The end that goes into the pot on the T18 is metal. The end against the micro switch is plastic, but it's like 4mm in diameter, so if someone breaks that, they're definitely monkeyfisting their radio: kzread.infoUgzSErf2_hTq87Aq7Dx4AaABCQ

    RC Video Reviews ahh ok so it must have a metal shaft going though the plastic wheel. Well I didn’t realize that and in that case then I totally agree with you in that it wouldn’t matter except for the feel. I was going on the fact that I thought the whole wheel was plastic which I’ve seen on other radios that caused breakage. Maybe I missed it in your videos but I don’t recall you ever bringing that up before in which case I would of never brought up the issue with breaking. Sorry that I didn’t get that part I stand corrected.

    Another genuine, no nonsense review John, good stuff. As already mentioned RadioMaster appears to be refining the TX16S with updates since initial launch but is not making any notable announcements about them, the larger rear case speaker being one of them. It's like their statement printed on the back of the radio product box, in that they strive to improve and support the product well after release. I think they are certainly doing that. As for Jumper the T18 Lite is a compelling radio and I think if they had onboard charging by default and released that version instead of the T16 I'd daresay a lot of people would have said RadioMaster what??? cause they had a fairly large fan base to begin with.

    Thanks for the note. Good luck with your choice. They're both very good radios. One thing I would point out now that things have changed a little is the Radiomaster has touchscreen and EdgeTX now supports touch. Some people with Jumpers have had buyer's remorse that they would have to retrofit their screens to take advantage of touch. If that's not a concern for you--then you really can't go wrong with either one.

    Nice job, I do have some advice, whenever you evaluate things like this you need to weight items with a multiplication factor from high to low, ie if you have 10 items the most important thing gets a 10 and the least important thing gets a 1, of course that is subjective and will be different for different people but it is the best and proper way to do these sort of evaluation, other than that you did a great job. Thanks for sharing.

  • @RCVideoReviews

    @RCVideoReviews

    3 жыл бұрын

    The problem with weighting is that everybody and I do mean *everybody* has a different priority list. For some it's range, others battery, others weight/colors/stick height/grip height/screen temperature/brightness/volume/charge jacks/battery size/etc... The very second I start weighting assessments, I'll get a fistful of complaints that my priorities aren't correct and that "battery is far more important than weight" or "volume is more important than screen brightness" This approach puts all deltas on a level playing field and the viewer--whom I've learned to trust--can make weight judgements based on the observed deltas. I appreciate your point of view and comment though. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to engage. J

    Good review of those two radios... 16:45.. I have found that on those cheap Chinese mini quad transmitters that I can effectively add Expo just by increasing the stick height. This makes a taller stick less sensitive to actual aircraft control. In your example either stick is fine because you can add expo in the programming software and the stick heights are adjustable on most radios.. 18:15.. I look at it like you looked at the gimbal tensioners .. Metal is better than plastic in the long run... and you did give 2 point for the Metal Tensioners....;-)

    I just ordered the Jumper T18 5in1 version because they are deeply discounted to $110. Regarding the plastic tension arm on the gimbal. I would assume with the plastic tension arm, the cross axis 'thump' is dampened with plastic vs metal on the right stick ( mode2) . Having a dampened cross axis feel is subjective. I have several RC radios ( Frsky, Spektrum) . I set my spring tension to around 100g at full throw so that all my radios have the same tension. The cross axis thump is different among the radios set at the same tension. They all have plastic tension arms.

    I bought the radiomaster tx16s after owning the jumpert16 pro and it started playing up, as in some switches stopped working. I know it’s probably going to be the ribbon cables, but after trying to get the new ones from jumper, and them saying it would take a while to arrive and that I should get in touch with the company that I bought it from, I just think their service is crap. Before you say that it’s because I didn’t go through all their hoops I can tell you that I did, including sending a photo of the serial number. I’m more than happy with my choice of radiomaster, haven’t had a problem with it, apart from learning everything that it is capable of, haven’t even updated it, no need as yet, and I won’t even do it straight away when the upgraded version to enable the touchscreen, at least not until it’s been out for a few weeks at least, just to make sure that there aren’t any issues. I love the radiomaster tx16s, and the only modification that I’m going to do to the case is drill some holes near the top to run some cords through so that I can have a looping system to hold it by the cord, rather than 3D printing some sort of adaptation, yes it is thick, and a bit of a tight fit, but I believe it offers more protection than the nice looking case of the jumper. I also have a crossfire unit on mine, which makes it a pain to fit in the case, but I just take the aerial off to fit inside, plenty of room to fit that and a strap as well.

    Hi! I have a question about the TX16s. Im buying my first radio and I'm confused about charging. (I have zero experience, except for flying with a playstation controler on drl racing simulator) Where I'm buying the radio they say it comes with an 18650 battery tray, but in the video you had something completely diffrent (the 5000mah one). So do I need the 18650 batteries or should I be getting something else? I think I just have no clue how charging and batteries work in the rc world 😅

  • @RCVideoReviews

    @RCVideoReviews

    3 жыл бұрын

    I think the largest 18650 batteries I've seen are 3500mah. That's what I use in the Jumper T18. The 18650 designation means: 18mm diameter, 65mm length, 0 = they are cylinders. If you want to use the tray on either radio, the tray is designed for 18650 cells. Since the cells are wired in series, two 3500mah 18650's is still only 3500mah. The Radiomaster has a bigger bay and can hold a larger battery--as shown in the video. So if you want a Radiomaster, they sell a Radiomaster 5000mah 2s pack which goes for about $19. You can get 2 18650's shipped for about $10. Bottom line: If you go with Radiomaster, I would buy (and did buy) the 5000mah pack they sell. If you go with the Jumper, 2x18650's are what you'll want unless you can find an aftermarket 2s design with more mah that fits. It's definitely possible if you use a shrink wrapped 2s pack vs using the tray.

    The 18650 tray has a standard 3 pin balance lead. I'm using a quite small 700mah 2s battery made for a mini heli. Battery doesn't last long but its completely fine while I wait for 18650s in the mail.

    awesome comparison. Just wanted to point out you sounded a bit heated about the jog wheel plastic vs medal. You liked metal gimble parts and the handle over plastic ones. In the case of a much used jog wheel a important moving part. metal would also be better. having a plastic jog wheel is about the same as having plastic gimble sticks or switch arms. Two things you would never want plastic. Just something to think about. Nothing to do with the feel of the wheel just it's service life as a moving part.

  • @RCVideoReviews

    There's no functional or reliability concern with the plastic jog dial. The tensioners hold a spring that is under constant pressure and leverage throughout the life of the radio. All of the buttons on the entire radio are plastic. The jog dial is just another button. I don't believe with normal use it will ever be a problem. I'll grant that it moves--but it's not a load bearing part. The T18 jog dial has a metal shaft that spins the pot. The other end is a thick 4mm barrel that pushes the button.

    You can't change anything about gimbal precision. There are no user selectable options on the radio. That said, there is no OTA protocol to limit gimbal resolution to say 10bit, but I don't know enough about how the gimbal ->adc->usb output mechanics work. What I can say is that I use my TX16s with sims regularly and have no issues with resolution. If you're asking to have your throttle self-center, that is a mechanical change inside the radio. You have to take the back cover off and look at the gimbal to figure out how they relieve spring tension to prevent centering. It's usually some sort of screw on the gimbal.

    As far as the batter goes, aren't 18650's around 3500mAh on average? Meaning two would be 7000'ish mAh's. Meaning that even though a 5000mAh LiPo takes up more space, it doesn't actually provide more power.

    They would be 7000'ish if you connected them in parallel. These aren't connected in parallel, they're connected in series. Each cell peaks at 4.2v. If you connected in parallel, you'd give 4.2v @ 7000mah. Since we're connecting in series, we're delivering 8.4v @ 3500mah.

    more or less its the same radio hardware wise... so its more or less down to what you like. the biggest thing for me is that they released both radio´s without touch screen functioning, dont care if OpenTX has not released the touch screen drivers, if they sell a radio with a touch screen they need to make it work, both brands. period.... OpenTX 2.4 is still faaaaar faaaar away... for me tho, with small hands the jumper works best being thinner and lower endpoint on the sticks for my smaller hands. was the same with the Jumper T16. and RadioMaster just sounds cheep due to their older crappy radios, i have a issue with that to but a RadioMaster...

    The touch screen situation is unfortunate, but that's just not the way this system works. If you get into OpenTx, you need to learn to resign yourself to the development cycle of OpenTx which is determined by the developers, not the hardware manufacturers. That would be akin to saying HP laptops need to have working iris scanning even though the current revisions of Linux don't support it. Simply not the way the opensource system works.

    They're so close... SD card placement is a non issue... How often do you take the SD card out??? The folding handle is better, don't go whinging your radio around by the handle and it'll be fine... Oh yay metal... that is bolted to a plastic case... so yeah... Internal charging... yeah but plenty of cheap mods out there for that, still use Bob's battery on my T16 Pro Hall. Plus a dedicated DC jack and isolated charger is way better IMO so both radios missed here... This should not be something included on the circuit board and the aftermarket stuff charges faster anyway. Battery bays on both radios are big enough for batteries that will last all weekend. Again non issue. If anything the smaller bay is nice because you don't have to add foam or padding to keep the battery from flopping around. The neck strap attachment is fine on either radio, this *cough Futaba* radio is balanced neutrally, it doesn't need more than one attach point. Touchscreen... I'd rather use the buttons or Companion... screen this small plus out in the sunlight is gonna be meh... props to Radiomaster for including it, the Jumper apparently will have it as an add on. Didn't even mention R9 support in this review at all... have 0 idea why... that is a big deal for those who use it... o r you could go the other way and mention the PCB antenna on the T18 Hall and Pro is only 60% as much range as the Radiomaster... this is not an issue for the T18 Lite... Speaker is a huge deal outside... my T16 is super loud and I can't imagine a quiet speaker... this should be worth way more than 2 points... that is a HUGE deal for pilots. When I hit a switch I NEED to hear confirmation. This review should be the T18 Lite vs the Radiomaster as those are the 2 comparable radios. The T18 Hall and Pro add nothing except reduced 2.4ghz range and dodgy R9 support. The Lite gets you the nice external 2.4ghz antenna and add on the R9 or Crossfire since I don't know anyone who would choose R9 over Crossfire...

    SD Card Placement - I have to call it out because if I don't, it's considered a miss by others. Some people actually do prefer to remove their SD card. Watch Lee. The folding handle is better if you want a folding handle. Totally subjective statement. Personally I don't like folding handles, I'd rather have solid metal. I did a video on adding internal charging: kzread.info/dash/bejne/f4ScuMSRlJfKZaw.html I don't know why you say isolated charging is way better. What is the basis for that statement and what is "isolated" charging. Are you suggesting relying on an external balance/bms system?? That seems kind of silly. Faster isn't always better, and do you know what the charge rate of the internal BMS actually is? Personally, I would rather have my batteries charge at a slower rate if possible. Battery bay is not big enough on the T18 if you use external modules like Tracer, Crossfire, Dragonlink. More capacity is ALWAYS better in those cases. I've gone through the tiny 18650's too quickly flying long duration flights on the T18. The balance point changes with battery weight. I didn't mention R9 because R9 sucks. This isn't a review of the T18 or Pro, and I have no access to the PCB antenna. Not only that, I personally do not conduct antenna reviews because I believe one has to have the correct equipment and training to conduct an accurate assessment of range. The screen in direct sunlight works perfectly fine. I live in Florida too, so it's not like we don't have to deal with lots of sunlight here. The upgraded speaker on the TX16s is every bit as loud as the T18. Radiomaster fixed that issue. You may need to hear confirmation, but for me, most of the time I turn the volume of my radio off. This review is the T18 lite vs the Radiomaster. The Pro adds RDC90 gimbals--did a review of that as well.

Particularly the ones from this Frsky are peeking way higher than the others in Radiomaster T16s protocol portfolio, though don't have any receivers in that brand, was just curious to check it with an RF meter. But sofar like the T16s, and a tad under 120USD incl. shipping it seems fair priced, but did mess up my purchase-version with a mode1 but was very easy to change by just changing the two gimbals and 2x 4 screws. Will update the FW when touch is included' for now there doesn't seem to be any benefits to update from the release it arrived with. Thx for the compared video.
