As a Vietnamese it's a pleasure to see those jumbo drawings. About the name itself. The Tonkin is known as Đàng Ngoài (Outer Kingdom) whose capital is Hanoi. The Lê Emperor was at the top but the true power was in the hand of the Trịnh lords and the Trịnh clan. Meanwhile Southern Vietnam was known as Cochichina aka Đàng Trong (Inner Kingdom) led by the Nguyễn lords and the Nguyễn clan. The Nguyễn clan consolidated and further expanded their influence to the Mekong Delta. The two Kingdoms was split at the Gianh river (Quảng Bình province)
I watched two documentaries on Netflix over the weekend, and Keith happened to be in both of them. Both times, I laughed and turned to my friend to announce, "I know that guy!" It was in these moments, however, I was struck by the realization that I was sitting alone, at my computer, in my underwear, and I have no friends.

+Ng Wei Xin Can you elaborate what is the reason behind this caution?
I love how you can tell though the first drawing that the artist got bored or annoyed. First he tries to draw the Dutch flag waving in the wind and then draws the English flag as an easy rectangle. So relate-able.
IMHO these pictures are among the most valuable archives of the early interactions between Vietnamese and the Western world. I'm glad that these pictures are well preserved after all these years.
You stuck in the lift somehow elevated my mood...
This is fascinating. What a glimpse into Vietnam of the 1600s
Thanks Brady for showing this! Greeting from Hanoi, Vietnam.
And the time of this drawing is 1684, which was about a decade after the War between the Trịnh clan and Nguyễn clan. The war was between 1627 - 1672 with 7 gruelling battles but none of them could gain triumph. It ended up with a truce which they split their territory with the Gianh river as the boundary. It was the time that the use of gunpowder and firearms was most recorded. The Trịnh clan even asked for the help from the Dutch VOC in Batavia (Jakarta), but it failed miserably.
My favourite objectivity episodes are the ones where we see how things were visually recorded. It's just amazing thank you!
Brady, I know you don't get as many views as you should on this channel, but this is my favorite channel of yours! I love learning with you and Keith, and I hope you don't stop any time soon!
I love these drawings, Brady! Objectivity is one of my favourites. :)
Fantastic video as always. James and Brady are quite a phenomenal team. Keith is perhaps one of the most brilliant men alive, astonishing man!
You know what, this is one of the best channels on youtube. You're capturing the general public's attention with these really precious historic objects. That's amazing. I wonder if traffic to the royal society has been positively affected by these videos?
Simply amazing !!
Those drawings are really amazing.
I envy you Brady. You can see and touch history yourself. I love this channel
Very very interesting. I'd love to see a similar channel to this for the Pitt RIvers museum in Oxford. Full of anthropological curiosities like this!

Keith is magnificent; does he know everything about every object in the archives?! I love this channel, thanks.
I love the smell of 17th century painting in the morning.
I could listen to Keith all day.
make a video on history of forensic science with some early work in the field here at the royal society
My city! My country!.I'm Vietnamese! :D
@ Objectivity- I live near Berkeley, and may have to visit Cliff Stoll from Numberphile to pick up a Klein Bottle! If I get the time (Currently transferring to Colorado to finish my degree) but ayee If I can , I can! Have to give him a call sometime. Cheers, wish these were twice a week! (also may be buying a Speedmaster ;) *crosses fingers* )
I love you, Keith.
Have you guys ever considered taking a trip to the library of congress and looking at stuff there?
I wonder if Keith studies the objects before hand or does he just know his stuff so well.
I live in Vietnam right now! I'm geeking out about these! GAAAHAHAHHHAHAHAGAGAGAHAHA That's the sound I make when I geek out.
This was probably my favourite episode yet! I wish we could see more of those paintings fabulously narrated by Keith!
Is there anything about the incredible door they walk through at the one minute mark ?
I want to see some more of that door you just walked through...any chance of a look?

+465maltbie I'd like to see a full show on the architecture
4:00 - Almost certainly a depiction of the "indian rope trick" (google it if you don't know it). I'm surprised Keith didn't identify it.
I just realized that Brady and Jon Gruden are the same person
It would be fascinating to know if the same city view could be compared today, and if any of the buildings depicted still exist.

Sadly nearly non of them still exists. There were a chain of civil wars happening at later time that destroyed the majority of iconic buildings. After the wars ended, Hanoi was again downgraded from its capital status and moved to another area nearby, and that process destroyed the rest.

99% has been destroyed for many reasons, it is ironic that even the architecture of the Le Dynasty just 300 years ago cannot be found right in the capital Hanoi. The remaining ancient architectural forms are now often cut and repaired according to the style of the Nguyen Dynasty.
i wounder what's not get to be in the royal society... who decide what is important and what is not...
I would love to meet Keith at a bar and have a long conversation about everything he knows!
Hi Keith, how can I obtain a scanned copy of this map? It will be a great resource for Vietnameses who wish to know more about the history of Vietnam.
which is the biggest book in the Royal Society
In the States its "Where's Waldo" so is Where's Wally a regional thing or a mistake?
@ObjectivityVideos
Жыл бұрын
As it is British-made and called “Where’s Wally?”, I think maybe Waldo is the regional adaptation. :) en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Where%27s_Wally%3F
Why is there a where's Wally on the thumbnail?
We need more sword-crazyness!
If you carried a pizza like that, it would be ruined!
Did the Brits decide whether they were going to return all that stuff to Greece?
@TotalAssBag

+Aj Koorstra No we decided the Greeks won't do a very good job of looking after them (if you are talking about the elgin marbles?)
And, not be one of those guys, but 12th!
Interesting enough, Vietnam was a super power at this period with diplomatic ties to China. Till the French turned up...
Someone needs to make a Vietnam War joke that connects to this video.
4:41 :3
Sword craziness FTW
a retinue?? no idea what that it, but it looks like a circus
1:40 the U.S probably burned that down.
Love this channel. There are two things I'd like to see: (1) any correspondence or meeting minutes debating the possibility of letting women into the RS, and (2) anything about wombats. (Why wombats, I hear you ask? Because they're one of my favourite animals.)
At about 4:00, and if you look at the World now, that is not unlike several things today. Is this willfully ignorant? I' must be so wrong.. :)
This sort of thing puts paid to the idea that to be a time-traveller one would have to be white.
Is it really where's wally instead of where's waldo in the uk? Why on earth would that change be deemed necessary? Is Waldo a particularly American name and I never realized it! ?
That drawing would be called racist in todays standards.
