    I can't thank you enough for the time you put into these videos, and answering questions. I've been watching yours, along with My Shire farm videos (loved the last one you did together) among others to start my own quail journey. I appreciate the open sourced information among the community. Again I thank you, your wife, sister and everyone involved. See ya tomorrow night.

    MY JMF (Southwest Game birds) wilds come this week. I am very interested in maintaining the gene pool and keeping weight up. I plan to run one covey for meat. Raise about 30 at a time and keep one roo and 5 hens as my matting pair. I will weigh them all at 6 weeks and consistently keep the biggest as my breeders. I think I can do 3 runs of quail each summer and only keep the pair over winter. Anything else you recommend for that size operation? How often should I order new eggs to keep the genetics fresh? I was thinking once ever 3-5 years would be sufficient.

    To each their own, for sure. I weighed my birds at 6 weeks and did the culling then, but I regretted doing it so late. I lost many birds due to fighting, which I attributed to the awakening of sexual maturity. I think Terry is on to something...

  • @charlesdang2557

    @charlesdang2557

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@babykraig I had that problem for two reasons: too many males and too many birds in general in my cage. I distributed the males and culled the rest. Started with 1:3 M:F ratio, then moved to 1:5. That helped tremendously. Curiously enough, most of the injuries came from the larger hens pecking the lesser males. There is no magic formula for cage density. I just thinned down the numbers until the fighting stopped. I should have culled the lesser males at an early stage like Terry does. It helps cuts down on the fighting, saves money on feed and definitely saves your ears from having to hear a bunch of juvenile males crowing. Win/Win/Win.

     @Charles Dang Thanks for that. My cage is 36"W X 24"D x 12"H and there are 5:1 f:m and they were pecking on one in particular. Well i separated the injured bird until it got better and placed it back in the cage a week ago and all seems to be going well so far. Do you think i can add six more birds to that sq footage, like another 6???

    Selective breeding for weight?? ok I'm going to teach you the lesson my quail taught me last week...if you are selectively breeding for weight your quail should receive a limited restricted amount of food..... sounds counter intuitive but it's a fact, give what I'm saying some thought, if you still don't understand why this is the case message me...I'd rather you figured it out yourself instead of me sounding patronizing as I know you're an experienced breeder...... Honestly I can beyond any shadow of a doubt more than prove my point if it comes to that so please ask if needs must....That book your reading would make good kindling lmfao...I am a creative muse that has spent most of his adult life learning to see in ways most cannot.. You're not going to be able to highjack that by trying to suggest your steering me into those realizations just because you want me to be beholding to you...
