July 2024 Sew What Subscription Box Unboxing

Ойын-сауық

Today I am finishing my Sew What Box unboxing series. I have a 6 month subscription and here is the last month.
I must make a correction also, turns out I don’t know flags, every time I say Belgium 🇧🇪 i meant the Netherlands 🇳🇱. I am sorry for my mislabeling.
I have no affiliation with the company, but here is their website and a discount code if you like.

I guarantee it'll be Joann's fat quarters and repeats. That's one of the reasons i canceled. I check back sometimes to see if its changed because i like the concept, but it hasn't. That blue star fat quarter you got in your project box this month is the same one that was in a box from over a year ago. $39 for 10 low-med quality fat quarters is insane. ☹️

That’s what I’m thinking. I’m curious about how bad it might be, it might surprise me and turn out pretty cool.

I'm thinking that the fabric quality for the stash box will probably be the same as the project box.

Me too, but it’s so tempting. Kind of like a “I bought it so you don’t have to” thing.

Good morning and happy Monday! May you all have an easy day today. There are definitely issues with this month's offering. As you pointed out, it would have been better if this were a June box so that there would be time to make it before the 4th of July. I'm sure you weren't the only person who received/opened it after the holiday was over. If you pause the video at 7:13, it's very obvious that the red & white strips are shorter than the blue ones by about 3/8". Not an insurmountable flaw - the finished contrast row can be trimmed to match the length of the shortest strip before stitching it to the background - however since one of the big selling points of this $39 box is that the cutting has been done for you, they should take a little more care in doing those cuts accurately. If in fact the red & white pieces are too short (as opposed to the blue ones being too long), then the finished runner is going to be slightly narrower than it ought to be. I'm curious as to what kind of table this runner is supposed to fit. Using the "measure your table and make your runner 1/3 as wide and 12" longer" rule of thumb, we're looking at this fitting a table that is 36" wide by 24" long. It would work as a topper on a 36" x 60" table since that would leave enough space between the fabric & the table's edge to hold a place setting, but they're not advertising it as a topper. Frankly, with the amount of material in the box, I think the placemats would have been a better project choice. The patriotic theme is not my style at all (and I'm not even Canadian, although both my parents were). I do like the colors, I just don't like them as a combo. I'd much rather have the same patterns with a different color scheme; just think how nice this would look in shades of green, white, and aqua. As for their stash builder subscription, I'd bet a shiny dime that they're going to be JoAnn fat quarters (which as you know frequently go on sale for as low as $1.59), and the patterns will be ones you can find online for free. Why pay $40 for a box of random fat quarters when you can buy the exact same ones for half the price directly from JoAnn? Now there's no shame in using their fabrics - but if I'm paying high-quality prices I expect to get high-quality materials. You've already been disappointed with the project box, and I think you'd be disappointed with the stash builder, too.

I didn’t clock the different cuts, I’ll have to take a closer look when I’m laying it out. I do think the colours don’t quite work, especially the brighter blue, but we’ll see how it comes together. I also agree about keeping the same pattern but then they might have to purchase new stock. The more I get these boxes, the more I think they are just clearing out their overstock. This my curiosity about the stash builder! It would be such a waste of money, but I’m so curious.

I think the owner needs to hire someone that knows how to sew with high standards. The pre cut concept is hard to tackle when she has shown on videos that pieces are manually cut and with cheap fabric shape tend to be questionable

I agree, the patterns are usually pretty easy to follow, it’s mostly the pre cuts or fabric choice that gives me the problem.

I wonder how many subscription boxes they fill each month? Trying to manually cut for a large number of projects would likely result in workers rushing to get it done, which would explain why the pieces sometimes turn out the wrong size.

@@susanowen1709 Regardless of how many boxes … sewing with less quality fabric is more challenging . Higher thread count is easy to handle and have better accuracy. Like JoAnn fabric is easy to end up with something not always well sewn and then you think it was you . I won 3 boxes on a giveaway from this subscription and I feel bad for those you spend the money on it .

I don’t think the the pattern does anything for the box. And I don’t think the projects are that exciting. I don’t use table runners or half the stuff in some of the boxes.😊
