I remember one rsd I was pricing records and on rsd I realized I had priced the title incorrectly. I sold two and called the customer and refunded the amount, another customer I didn’t know so I refunded the difference to their cc. I quickly changed the prices on remaining stock. I would recommend reaching out to the store and if they priced in error, perhaps they will offer a refund of the difference.

Great to see a new video. I love all those Berglund Sibelius recordings - of the symphonies and tone poems (also available gathered up in two box sets) - but you rarely see them "in the wild", especially in the US - so congrats on finding a couple! Speaking of Japanese reissues, the new Bernie Grundman-mastered release of Ryuichi Sakamoto's Left-Handed Dream sounds phenomenal.

Yes all the 70s/80s Japenese reissues by "Great Tracks" are amazing. Most of them are cut by Bernie Grundman from hires files, but I find them to be excellent nonetheless. They did an incredible reissue series of albums from Minako Yoshida that are killer, they sound even better than the originals imo.

Very cool to hear you praise Boogie Maru. It’s a mile from my in-laws and I hit it every time we visit. I go there for the jazz, LP’s prices fairly but in line with today’s market. They have a LOT of Japanese pressings and also Japan-only releases. But also some killer OG’s on their impressive wall.

My record store in Portland, OR got me for $76 on that Chet RSD album. Wondered if you’ve heard of the Sugarcube SC-1? Has completely changed how I buy/listen to classical and jazz records. According to the company “ All Sugar Cube models internally process at 192/32 bit. The output signal is analog so it is only digital internally”. Kind of a game changer. Thanks for your great classical label videos. Really helped my purchases and knowledge. Take care.

Nice video! Hosono House is long-time favorite of mine. Your video convinced me to do a quick shootout between SKM-7010 and the original Bellwood purple label. They’re definitely not the same cut, but the two are almost indistinguishable in terms of sound. The original has slightly different EQ (a tiny bit more “air” around 12k), but the difference is very subtle. I don’t think you’re missing much, if anything. As for Taeko Ohnuki, have you looked into the Grey Skies/Sunshower 2-LP set from 1984? It sounds great and is still much cheaper than the originals. Avoid the CD release with the same cover art though-it uses digital noise reduction and sounds pretty awful.

I agree. I have ceased shopping at one local store in my area because the owner tried to shame me for questioning his price on a RSD St. Paul & The Broken Bones live record. I talked him down and he gave me attitude. I then later saw the same record in two different stores at the correct price. Wanted to go back and tell the 1st vendor what I found, but decided to sever my relationship with that store.

Another great video. Thanks again. I hear you on the Record Store Day. The shine has come off for me. On a professional note; you asked about microphone techniques when recording a video. Feed the mic and cable up inside your t-shirt and clip it on your collar between the point of your chin and the back of your jaw. This will bring the mic close to the source (your voice) but not in direct line where it might make a 'pop'. As it is close to the source, you will not have to raise your levels and pick up background noises. During this video we can hear the air conditioning because your mic is placed and levels raised to pick up all room sources beyond your voice. Take care.

I would have gone back to the store and at least given them a chance to make it right. They might have gladly given you twenty bucks back. Not everything is a plot. It is possible that they made an honest mistake. I prefer the talk it out like reasonable adults approach. That being said I love the fact that you are including classical records in your vids which get short changed often. I also like that you are making longer format videos. You seem to have good taste so far, I really love Akiko Yano, and I will check your content out more. 😊

There is no money in new vinyl, stores make very little on it in general. The rsd stuff is even more costly to stores, so a lot of stores charge more than msrp on those records. I avoid rsd stuff like a plague now, over priced and not a help or benefit to most record stores. In fact, not every store can be a part of rsd because of thier expectation of how much product they expect you to buy. At 64 dollars that record is rip off, 3 record set should not cost that much.

I think it's one thing to overcharge normal releases (still not good, but it happens), it's another thing to sign up to get limited releases, sign a public pledge with the wholesaler that you won't charge above msrp, and then do it anyway. The latter is just a bigger f-you to both RSD and to the customer.

I mean, it's pretty straight forward, the prices are set by RSD, in order to get RSD titles from the company, you literally have to sign a pledge saying you will sell it for that price. If its a mistake that's on them (but they had two copies and both were the same price) I didn't accuse them of doing anything other than pricing it wrong when they know for a fact they have to sell RSD titles for a particular price. I'm not tagging them on socials or putting them in the video title, I'm telling a story to my viewers of a true thing that happened. I'm not interested in getting in petty social media fights with business, I just won't go back there.

@@poetryonplastic I hear you, and I agree it appears pretty straight forward, but if you're going to harm their business you really should eliminate all possibilities first. Record stores are having a hard time competing with the online record retailers. If they are in fact price-gouging then they're doing it to themselves and you have every right to call them out. But in journalism you learn not to make assumptions but to exhaust every possibility for the truth, and you make that point in your report. It gives you credibility and it's only fair to them.

"That's the end of that story and Clock Tower Records." Woah. Fierce. Must be nice to have that kinda of power to drop a dime and take down an independent record store. lol. Plus that name is obviously trying to ride the coat tails of nostalgia for Tower Records. Independent record stores need to at least try to be unique. Now I'm glad you took them out.

My very good friend Jonny owns Clock Tower Records, and I know him to be an honest person in all respects. I like your videos, but I’m shocked that you didn’t even reach out to him to see if it may have been an honest mistake, which I’m pretty sure it was. In so far as reporting him without having all the facts, or even asking him about it. Shame on you.

WRT the Chet Baker/Grass Valley experience; you’re a smart guy, so I’ll just come out and say it. Your $20 sting probably translated into a much larger loss for a small business. You could have lodged a complaint with the organizers but your video lives on to apply punishment to the store. This was a completely picayune endeavor on your part. Not worth it. I’d expect more of you.

How is this any different from a negative review on google or yelp? More people probably see those.

@@poetryonplastic The authors of those Google and Yelp reviews often post their negative comments anonymously. You are a VC subject matter expert and a thought leader. That’s a core difference in my opinion.

I got back from this trip 6 days ago. How many records did you expect me to have listened to in that time?
