In 1870, at the age of 14, Julius Röntgen visited Franz Liszt in Weimar; after playing piano for him he was invited to a soiree at Liszt's house.
In Leipzig, he and his parents were part of the musical circle around Heinrich von Herzogenberg, and it was at their house that he first met Brahms. Later Röntgen moved to Munich, where he studied piano under Franz Lachner, a friend of Franz Schubert. At the age of 18 he became a professional pianist. During a concert tour through southern Germany he became acquainted with the singer Julius Stockhausen; at this time he also met a Swedish music student Amanda Maier (1853-1894), whom he would marry in 1880.
Amanda Maier was a gifted composer and violinist. I uploaded her fine Violin Sonata, watch it here:

In 1883, in association with composers Frans Coenen and Daniel de Lange, Röntgen founded the Amsterdam Conservatory. In 1884 Röntgen was heavily involved in the foundation of the Concertgebouw. He also was close friends with Johannes Brahms and performed his 2nd Concerto in 1887 with Brahms conducting.
Röntgen's travels and concerts made him a well known musical figure in Europe his friend's circle included Edvard Grieg, Johannes Brahms, Niels Gade, Carl Nielsen, Donald Tovey, Pablo Casals, Johannes Messchaert, Percy Grainger, etc. etc.

There are not enough cello sonatas in the standard repertoire to justify Röntgen's second sonata being as underplayed as it is. Seriously, this is wonderful and passionate sonata, written with grace and skill, and I think any cello-and-piano duo would find this a joy to play - I certainly would, given the opportunity to perform it.

A dramatic and passionate sonata that undoubtedly deserves to be in the standard cello repertoire. Röntgen was both a very prolific composer and a very consistent one - everything I’ve heard by him is truly inspired and captivating. He had a real gift for melody and formal concision.

I agree! I was just hearing the motif and I was trying to remember where I heard it before.

Erstklassig!

A beautiful work that quite naturally recalls Brahms, but that has a lot to say on its own. The variation-finale won me over; the preceding 'adagio' is quite lovely and affecting, albeit it had me wondering in what work I've heard a similar melody, perhaps one with more emotional depth. This one may remain fresh and interesting to me after a few hearings, or perhaps my interest will wane and I'll just forget about it - or would, if I'd give it the chance...?
