does anybody have any recs on vocabulary? like anywhere to find a reliable dictionary/vocab building tool? i’m assyrian, and grew up heavily around Assyrians, but we are very washed from our culture. sadly, my grandfather who came to america never taught any of his children, so i never had the opportunity to really learn. i have a physical dictionary, but am lost/confused on dialects since there are so many. i would absolutely cherish any help on where to find some really good sources. much love to all other assyrians! ♥️💙💛

Shlama. Go to LearnAssyrian.com and download the Lyrics PDF and the music files. Learn one or two songs and you will be amazed at how fast you will learn. Under the Blocks section, there is the vocabulary guide where my mom explains each word and give sample sentences. Search this channel for Learn to Read and Write Assyrian in Five minutes. Also, there are two books free online at the website for Animals and Church vocabulary.

I'm really confused with Assyrian history..... So the Assyrians are Babylonians?..... At least seems to be the same area? Mesopotamia??? How many different dialects of Aramaic is there?

No mate ,Assyrians are Not Babylonian .. in Mesopotamia (now known as Iraq and part of Syria) we had first Somaris then Assyrian(in the city of Nineveh) ,when Assyria was fallen down in 612 ,it was followed by the Babylonian civilisation and so ... Aramaic does not belong to Assyrians ,they are completely different from us as the difference between China and US ...We speak Assyrian Not Aramaic

@@AndersErichsen-rr7vs Sumerians first inhabited Mesopotamia. Akkadians were Semites who migrated into the region and mixed with Sumerians and they were not very different. There flourished Akkadian and Sumerian city-states until Sargon of Akkad (first emperor in history) united the two groups into one empire. Sumerian and Akkadian were spoken in the region (yes, the first civilization on the planet was bilingual!) Sumerian is identified today as a dead language isolate while Akkadian is a dead semitic language. Later as that Akkadian empire fell, the descendants of this mixture of people gave birth to the Assyrian, Babylonian, Neo-Assyrian empires, etc... In the 1st millennium BCE, during the Neo-Assyrian Empire, Aramaic flourished in the region due to an influx of Aramean immigrants. The Aramean people were absorbed into the Assyrians (Sumerians/Akkadians) and bilingualism again existed with Akkadian and Aramaic until Aramaic took over and Akkadian died. However, Akkadian roots continue to live on in Aramaic to this day due to this bilingualism. The Neo-Assyrian Empire fell to the Persians but due to isolation and resistance to Arabization/Islamization, the Assyrian identity lives on with the Assyrian People to this day who live as minority groups in Iraq, Iran, Turkey, Syria, The Western World, etc… All dependents of those people living today are Assyrians! 'Assyrian" encapsulates Aramaic, Chaldean/Babylonian, etc.. Today, we modern ASSYRIANS speak "Assyrian Neo-Aramaic (ANA)" and are descendants of the Ancient Assyrians. “Chaldeans" are just Catholic leaning Assyrians with the dialect "Chaldean-Neo Aramaic (CNA)" ANA and CNA are eastern Neo-Aramaic dialects and are almost fully intelligible. There are Central Neo-Aramaic (Turoyo) and Western Aramaic dialects who are a bit less intelligible. Eastern and Central Neo-Aramaic speakers write Neo-Aramaic in the Syriac Alphabet while ~3 Western Neo-Aramaic villages like Maaloula use the Square "Ashuri" Aramaic Alphabet. Side note: Hebrew today is written in exactly this Ashuri Alphabet. There are also divisions of Aramaic according to time periods: Old, Middle, and Neo-Aramaic. Old Aramaic is dead, The Western Aramaic spoken today is the last surviving dialect of Middle Aramaic; All else is Neo. Another thing to keep in mind when trying to understand this is a vernacular can be different from script. Ex: Hebrew language is written in Square Script Aramaic while Aramaic is written in Syriac. I'm no Assyriologist but I'm an Assyrian from Nineveh and this is my understanding of the topic. I hope it helped and I'm more than happy to answer any more questions!

She often pronounces "oo" conjunction between the words. For example: allap, allaha oo-ata. Is it "and", like in Hebrew? Why there is no "oo" in the transliteration?
