@@drinkingpoolwater Your coach literally walks up to you and is like "You're about to get replaced" and is not saying that to the Wally Pipp of the Patriots he's saying it to the Lou Gehrig of the Patriots - it was such a false equivalency it could only be taken as intentionally insulting. Comparing one of the best known names in the WR class to a person whose name nobody ever heard of was wrong right off the cuff. It would be like telling Tom he was Wally Pipp after he had a bad or low effort game when the whole world already knows Tom Brady. The story wouldn't even work with Wes and Jules after Jules replaced him. It would start like "You ever heard of Wes Welker" and instead of "No" the answer is "Obviously - he's one of the best receivers in the game" the point of the story kinda falls apart. Wes' ego got in the way of his production but his name will never be forgotten unlike Wally Pipp - if anything, the popularity of Wes Welker likely led to a ton of Googles of Wally Pipp so Wes' name was already big enough to drive traffic to other names.
People have so many conflicting opinions about these Patriot teams, but it’s impossible to not love Edelman. The guy’s heart, tenacity, and work ethic is something that every coach wishes they could have on their team

Wally Pipp was probably an obscure enough reference but I'm sure most younger generations don't even know who Lou Gehrig was. Welker was born in 1981, forty years after Gehrig died. Unless he was into baseball card collecting or knew the name from the disease, I wonder if Wes even knew who Gehrig was? Much less Pipp.

“Move away from the defender.” That’s some hall of fame strategic thinking right there.
That was a tough watch , the WW exchange. WW's ignorance of sports history was a brutal look. . Belichek was literally trollng him that he was about to lose his job and even when it was clear WW did not know he was being trolled, Belichek wouldn't stop.
Love his impression of Bill hahaha. Also, pretty glad we decided to hold onto him.

If you're a guy like this - once you have success the coaches start to love you more because they get a lot of credit for how well youre doing due to the fact that you were so unheralded to begin with
“Bad practice, your cut. Good practice, your maybe not cut.”
And years later giving that 7th round guy a shot led to a finger tip catch in the Super Bowl and a Super Bowl ring. Being a coach/gm is crazy
Bill's savage enough to make a Wally Pipp reference but not enough to say Bledsoe.

Loved Welker, but Edelman became an upgrade. More elusive, better acceleration, slightly faster, deeper route tree, and utterly fearless over the middle. There was no one better on third and long. People make a big fuss over the regular season numbers (forgetting Edelman didn't start full time at WR the first few seasons since he was busy returning punts and kicks and playing occasional DB), but he's just behind Jerry Rice in playoff receiving stats. An utterly complete football player--he really should be a Hall of Famer; you can't tell the story of 2010-2020 in the NFL without him.
