Julia Tries ALL Of The Most Popular MREs | Delish

Ойын-сауық

In a special camping edition of Julia Tries Everything, Julia tries all of the most popular MRE (Meal, Ready to eat) packages from two of the biggest brands on the market: AmeriQual APack and Sopakco Sure-Pak.
If you haven't heard of these, they're U.S. military operational rations. That means each self-contained meal is meant to provide all the nutrition needed to sustain the armed forces-and during the pandemic sales for MREs have hit an all-time high. Now doomsday preppers and extreme campers are looking to get their hands on these rations.

As a Veteran this brought back a lot of memories. Believe me when you are in the field/deployed those MREs taste so much better! Lol 😆 You have to kneed the package halfway through cooking so it gets warm on both sides. We used the boxes the entrée came in to stuff it back into while warming to "insulate" it. But a hat/glove works even better. We would sit around and trade items. You become pretty talented with making something out of nothing. Ie... trade or save peanut butter and jelly for a "sandwich" . Jalapeño cheese and M&Ms/skittles were the High value items.

And I'm not mad, this actually takes me back. Also careful shaking the drinks, I had them explode on me multiple times 🤣 Edit 2 Your poor digestive system after all these. They definitely make you poop. Never knew why until you pointed out the amount of fiber in them. 😆😂

They are supposed to make you poo, my dad used to say that during the war is was extremely important to be regular... you couldn't just stop to go, and you couldn't just wander into the bush to go either. He used to tell me stories how the enemy would take empty mre cans and make "dirty explosives" with them. They would go to the bathroom in them and then fill them with sharp bits. Many men died from infections, he said the hospitals would be full of men swollen like balloons with infections because of left behind empty tins. ****thank you for your service!

As a 22 year air force vet ive eaten hundreds of these MREs. Your reactions were priceless. Fun facts ... 1. Crackers and tortillas will ALWAYS fall apart 2. You need to mix the mayo into the tuna beforehand - then you put it on the tortillas. 3. Put the cheese or peanut butter in the heating pack. That makes it nice and super gooey.

I used to be a Quartermaster Supply Sergeant who constantly ordered entire pallets of boxes of MRE's. They can last safely on the shelf for 10-13 years. I probably would never attempt one that was more than 20 years old. But mainly as long as no rodents get into the box and plastic, they can last a long time. Also if you eat a couple of them in a row, be ready to hit the toilet hard for a long while like you would after a large Taco Bell meal. The worst MRE ever is the Omelet one, Omelets that are not fresh are horrible. But having a couple of boxes for camping/emergency ration food is a great idea to include maybe some Mountain House dehydrated food. If you didn't know the magnesium gas that comes out of the heating pack is flammable and the package can be turned into a mini-bomb/hand or bed warmer when its cold. I've heard more recently they have finally come out with a pepperoni pizza one, that I need to try! MRE's are definitely not gourmet food, but if you are a bit of a created cook and you have access to other seasonings and sauces you can get creative with them!

Make sure to take plenty of stomach medication or you’ll be backed up for DAYS! This was fun to watch! My husband says he usually eats the main course as a meal and drinks the Gatorade. He saves the cracker, jelly, peanut butter, or cheese for later as well as the applesauce or “treat”. He says yes, technically it’s one meal, however the snacks help with hunger in between or if he needs an energy jolt. He says his favorite “snack” is a peanut butter and a jelly packet squeezed straight into him mouth! 😆

I never got poptarts in mine, usually the main dish, with a pound cake some crackers, some mixed nuts, maybe some sliced apples (but they were in the same type of bag as the main course), some candy, and then they had a side packet of salt, pepper, mini glass Tabasco, coffee instant type II, matches and a thing of toilet paper / napkin.

I’ve never tried opening those by tearing. Using a knife is way easier. Three MRE’s a day? Try 1/day.

I suspect things weren't evenly heated because you stood the packages mostly upright instead of mostly flat. The chemical reaction was only happening at the bottom of the heater because that's how far the water could reach. The heater should be tilted just far enough to keep the water from running out of it. Anyway, I love these videos and I'm so glad to see more! OMG! You burned the table?!

For the MREs: bring a stash of onion powder, garlic powder (or a combo, if you're trying to save space bcuz you're camping or backpacking), ginger, chili powder, a good curry powder, Italian seasoning and soy sauce packets.

I always think of MREs as army rations that have to be complete as is. You should know there are some really good freeze-dry options these days, but you need to add hot water. Mountain House, of course, which you can even get at Walmart. But at camping stores you find meals like Lamb Bourguinon and Thai Curry with Shrimp (Stowaway Gourmet) and other company’s options. If you’re putting away some food for emergencies, might as well taste good! Most all are good for at least 5 years, some much longer.
