Glad to see you talking bout compositing on this show. An underappreciated artform for animation, as well as an extremely vital one. Poor guys got they're work cut out for them with the rise of 3D camera's in anime within the last decade or so.

Yea syncing up those 3d landscapes with the 2d characters, when they are probably created by different companies altogether with little to no cooperation must be a pain in the rear end, also 3d leads to less natural smears so they have to worry about getting the timing right on the replacement blurs

I’m very glad compositing is getting more verbal notice in communities for animation because it really is what makes a show look defined.

So its not that JJK isn't well animated, its just that its not composited well.

Agreed. I think the main thing that took me out of many of the Season 1 fights was the laughably ugly CGI backgrounds. There were exceptions, like Todo & Yuji VS Hanami which used little CGI and overall looked great. Luckily Season 2 seems to have improved upon those as I noticed no ugly CGI backgrounds in the Kokichi VS Mahito fight, and in Gojo VS Disaster Curses there was only a little bit of CGI and it looks fine.

Yeah you’re gonna find it really weird but I (for some reason) loved how the lava looked in the domain expansion for jogo. As for the 3d backgrounds for the fight before the domain expansion, I did notice how weird the trees looked but honestly didn’t care even a bit while the fight went on. When paused though, it does make me uncomfortable

/: I think you're being picky. It looks great. Just because a handful of shots or fights don't have perfect perspective or off kilter lighting doesn't mean its "average" the animation is down right stunning for like 80 percent of the show.

Nice video. I loved JJK season 1 but it had some problems because of the scheduling and lack of time

I don't think that is bad animation, composition is different from animation. Jjk has some great sakugas that are holden back by the composition some times, but still great animated, the bad animations are the exceptions. I think that is better say that jjk is not well produced. It's no that polish, we can feel that was rushed

I agree in general with the idea that the compositing was this shows greatest flaw when it comes to animation. If you look at the demon slayer animation video i did a breakdown of how when looking at animation I largely break it down into two categories, animation quality (sakuga/flow/animation consistency) and animation style (art style, compositing, background style). There is sometimes a grey line between some aspects of these two categories but in general breaking it down this way is fairly simple. Anyway, when it comes to animation quality, the quality of the overall show including non action scenes is decent but could definitely be a bit better. But when it comes to many action scenes (not all) the animation quality and flow and sakuga generally is really high and there is a surprising amount it. When it comes to style character and background style rarely matter to me as long as the animation quality is really good. Compositing for things like lighting on the environment and characters also rarely matters to me. Of course if it's more dynamic and they can maintain an animation quality above a certain point than that is better. But either way I would consider both great animation. Anyway's I'm taking too long to get to my point, vfx and compositing of those vfx, things like using real fire, liquids, fireworks, etc in animation even if done really well on a technical level by the best in the industry tend to IMHO still not look good. Sometimes they don't look terrible or as jaring as you would expect them to, which is impressive in its own right, but they still tend to be jaring despite this. This scene in particular kzread.info/dash/bejne/fGustriyadu2aJM.html you point out for being bad and I remember thinking the same when i saw it and being a disappointed in those effects. That said I would categorize it as actually not that bad all things considered. I don't like it and I don't want to see it but at least it does seem fairly well integrated into the scene and it's more of a background effect instead of being front and center. At least this is the case for the portions that you show in this clip. I haven't watched recently so i can't remember if there are more egregious portions of the scene that you just didn't show in the video. But what I'm confused on is why you bash the scene I have timestamped above but praise the real fire assets that were used in demon slayer. I agree, it's of integrated fairly well, UFO table is one of the best at compositing stuff like that. But even the best can't seem to composite it at a satisfying level to make it actually worth doing. More impressive from a technical standpoint doesn't automatically make the animation good, satisfying, or appropriate for the scene. I feel like you conflate the two a lot especially when it comes to demon slayer. If you agree with what I'm saying it would be nice if you tried to include stating X is better from a technical perspective, but from a subjective perspective it still has obvious flaws that detract from the overall experience. Hence, this is why some people consider it bad animation. I personally fall in this camp, I recognize that from a technical perspective it's impressive, but it's still jaring and or has very noticble flaws that take you out of the experience. Hence I would categorize it as bad animation. To be clear, you personally might think that it's impressive and enjoyable from both a technical and subjective point of view. But mentioning something along these lines to your viewers I think would be beneficial. There are a variety of ways you could define good animation but these two I think are the most important and most common to touch on.

This season animation was really good looking

For me, the technical flaw that stands out is the utter lack of spatial perception in this show. Two steps can look like a mile, but 50 meters can look like 1 meter. That sort of spatial distortion kinda makes it hard to watch. Which is a shame, because the panelling in the manga is simply unmatched. What keeps me hooked is the story and the characters.

That's just an anime thing, most shows make use of techniques like that, visual exaggerations are common in this medium and it's one of the things that sets anime apart from live action, I see that as a positive thing

It got the animation it deserved for the first season, not the *best* but pretty good for the most part. Which coincides with the story at this point, season 2 needs to be some of mappas best cus those arcs are responsible for jjk being the success that it is

Man, you're probably not gonna see this, but I'm so glad that somebody other than me is actually aware of the obviosuly flaws in animation, I regards to mappa, tho you ended up picking up stuff that I myself haven't seen. Very good video, composition is a subject that is not frequently discussed (at least on yt), i appreciate that you mention the subject and the problems that JJK had in that section, about Jujutsu Kaisen 0, i watched it and it seemed to me that there was an improvement in photography, or at least in the backgrounds, do you think there was an improvement?

Did the Blu Ray Fix any of the issues they Mentioned, like the characters disappearing and the compositing issues?

What do you think about Spy x Family adaptation? Compare to similar show in the genre like Kaguya, I feel like it's too "basic", for a lack of a better word.

Just from an adaptation pov? Yea I do feel it's definitely a bit basic, visually it has some cool cuts here and there but the designs look very normal, they don't do anything creative from a composite or aesthetic aspect

JJK imo doesn’t have bad animation, it has bad compositing imo. They’re different things in my mind haha. The animation in general is great.

compositing is a part of animation though lol, that's like saying "it's not the sandwich that's bad, it's just the meat" that means the sandwich is bad

lol no. I can hear literally 1h of these minute technical details/flaws, and will still think it looks god-tier... What matters is the flow of the animation on the speed it was meant to be played at, after all - simply couldn't care less about slowmo or zoomed-in breakdowns. I do prefer season 2's style a lot tho, especially the goddamn Hidden Inventory arc, it's just so smooth (Shibuya is great too, altho clearly rushed thanks to Mappa being Mappa). Of courrse, the compositing is a lot better and overall more efficient, no needless to say - which is also the only point I truly can agree with. Altho I don't think its entirely necessary to look super artsy on every damn fight scene, sometimes simple fast paced and intensive action (like in Panda vs. Mechamaru) can feel better than anything else. besides, tbh I feel like Mappa's cgi is WAY ahead of the curve in 99% cases. Maybe only behind Demon Slayer's and dunno, Heavenly Delusion? Very rarely I've seen CGI integration better than their recent works (jjk s2's and aot final ep included).

As a normal viewer, I never focus at these issues and they don't annoy me as much as the heavy use of CGI, especially the scene where Sukuna cuts Mahito.

I heard jjk 0 looks better, also Takeda yuusuke is the art director for csm, teppei isn't involved as far as I'm aware, danseur looked very good, especially the compositing during the actual performances

Not really, look at shows by mappa such as garo vanishing line and stuff and it has the same problems as well, it's a very recurring thing with mappa shows, even some of the rage of bahamut has this problem

Most of the problems listed in the video got fixed in S2. I'm glad it doesn't look even close to being as shitty as S1.

It's not all about animation like DS, it's about how the viewers react to it. I enjoyed S1 animation anyways and I like S2 even better. The animation is good, and the fight scenes are fluid. It's all about enjoyment in my opinion. But if you don't like it, can't blame ya.

Budget is not the most important aspect in the anime industry, the studio may have millions of dollars, but if the production time will be for example 7 - 8 months for 24 episodes of anime, the budget will not help, the main aspects to make the anime turned out good is the production time and professionalism of the studio staff, in this case you can see that those who were engaged in compositing and backgrounds clearly lacked experience, who even said that about the budget? It's such a stupid myth.
